Printer version The founding of the 'Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa' in London in 1788 introduced a new era of exploration of that continent. This 'Africa Association' was created by the zeal and enthusiasim of Joseph Banks, supported by an informal group of wealthy men. The original aim of the Association was discovery, although halting of the slave trade and commerce later became equally important. Political and religious themes were discouraged.
The governments of England, France and Germany, later became involved in exploration, but generally with less elevating ideals.
In 1830 the Royal Geographic Society was founded, a short time later it absorbed the Africa Association.
The London Missionary Society's star was rising also, desiring to 'bring god to the heathen' and were actively sending missionaries to Africa and elsewhere. Those that did arrive in Africa, some found exploring either a natural adjunct to their mission or an accidental byproduct of their seach for converts. Livingstone, Krapt and Rebmann, to name but three.

NILE - A QUEST FOR THE SOURCE In the middle of the 19th century, the river Nile, one of the greatest remaining challenges for explorers, still had its origins behind a barrier of fetid swamps, fatal diseases and ferocious tribesmen. Its mystery was compounded by reports of fabulous lakes and mountains. This challenge fired the imagination of aggressive and individualistic British explorers who went out on dangerous and fever ridden expeditions to find the source of the Nile. They went into this forbidding area only “because it was there”. Successive journeys by Richard Burton , John Speke, James Grant and the Bakers - Samuel and his wife Florence - marked the Nile to its beginnings and pencilled in the central lakes region of Africa one of the last remaining blanks on the worlds maps. Lieutenant John Hanning Speke . These two individuals seemed perfectly suited to the task. Burton was already known for his bold exploits and although he had blighted his prospects in the Indian Service by his bluntness, he was not yet the frighteningly controversial figure he was to become His linguistic abilities and his evident valour and resourcefulness made him an Speke seemed almost as suitable, he was 29 and had considerable experience in collecting botanical and zoological specimens in the Himalayas and was also a surveyor. Although appearing complimentary, the two personalities were in fact utterly incompatible and the violent personal quarrel between Burton and Speke that followed saw armchair geographers taking bitterly opposed sides. Other explorers were involved variously Livingstone, who died whilst trying to clear up the Burton/Speke Nile controversy; Stanley who found his vocation in Africa: James Grant who joined Spekes second expedition to Africa; and Samuel Baker because he went to verify Spekes theories.

HISTORY: THE MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON (1844-1889)
The beginning of the colonial era in East Africa is not clear cut. The region started to fall under British influence since the first alliances of the Muscat sultanate with England, reinforced afterwards by Seyyid Said and prolonged during the Zanzibar sultanate. Apart from that ephemeral first British protectorate from 1824 to 1826, the European powers cultured their commercial relationships with the sultan. Both England and France attempted to dominate the trading routes with Asia. Since the Suez channel project was envisioned and forecasted to be the major highway for this trade, locating the Nile source meant controlling the river, and hence, the channel, reason why Uganda became a paramount objective. The channel would be opened in 1869 under French control, but in 1881 England would acquire most of the shares from an Egyptian citizen. These economic and political interests found their counterpart in others, less tangible. For some, the exploration of Africa also posed personal challenges, being of epic or religious nature. Pioneers over all pioneers, the first Europeans to penetrate the unexplored inner lands of East Africa were two German missionaries serving the

    Explorers of Africa
    by Aaron Stutz
Class of 1997 B efore the age of European imperialism in Africa, the interior of the continent was all but unknown to European civilization. Prior to the colonial interests of the major European nations, the age of exploration in Africa opened up many parts of the continent's interior. Numerous expeditions, notably those of Dr. David Livingstone, Sir Richard Burton, John Hanning Speke, Heinrich Barth, de Brazza, and Sir Henry Stanley, facilitated the rapid colonization of Africa by making known features of potential interest. These explorers were the key that would open up entirely new issues of rivalry and conflict between the European powers of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, ultimately contributing to the opening shots of World War One. One of the first, and most well-known, explorers to penetrate the interior of Africa was Dr. David Livingstone, a British physician and missionary. He was sent to South Africa as a medical missionary during 1840, and his subsequent expeditions and discoveries caused many parts of the extant maps of Africa to be redrawn. Among his many important contributions are his discovery and exploration of the Zambezi river in its entirety, as well as several African lakes. During a visit to England in 1865, he wrote Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambezi and its Tributaries, exposing the slave trade of the Arabs and the Portuguese, as well as revealing the commercial possibilities of the Zambezi region. Dr. Livingstone marked the beginning of the influx of explorers into Africa's interior.

This additional bibliography is taken mostly from Fawn Brodie's The Devil Drives: The Life of Sir Richard Burton and cites the literature up to the writing of her excellent book. I have included some other, mor recent citations in addition to her bibliography.

John Hanning Speke, who had already fought in the British army in India, first became an explorer in 1854, when he joined Richard Burton on a voyage of exploration to Somaliland and eastern Ethiopia. When in 1856 Burton was again sent out to Africa, this time to search for the source of the Nile in East Africa, he again chose Speke as his second-in-command. Together they discovered Lake Tanganyika, and while Burton lay ill, Speke on his own discovered Lake Victoria. For more on these voyages, see Richard Burton Speke was back in England before Burton. Although Speke had promised Burton not to publish anything about their discoveries until the latter had arrived as well, Roderick Murchison, the chairman of the Royal Geographical Society , gave out a press conference immediately after Speke's arrival, and when Burton reached England, Speke had already made their voyage famous, and had been appointed the leader of a new expedition to the area. Burton was bittered, especially because Speke proclaiming that Lake Victoria was the source of the Nile, while Burton himself believed that there was a whole series of lakes which all were sources of the Nile. The new expedition was prepared carefully. Speke chose James Augustus Grant, a friend from his army days, as his companion, while John Petherick, the British consul in Khartoum, was ordered to send ships upstream the Nile to Gondokoro to aid the explorers in their voyage back home. Speke and Grant left England in April 1860, and sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to Zanzibar, where they arrived in August. On October 2 they started their voyage to the inlands of Africa.

Author Code: EJHS Born: May 3, 1827 - Bideford, Devonshire, England Died: Sep. 15, 1864 - Corsham, Wiltshire, England Speke served in the British Indian Army in Tibet, the Punjab and in the Himalayas. He joined the Burton party in 1855, which attempted to explore Somalia and was wounded in an attack by locals. He rejoined Burton in 1856 and together they explored the coast of East Africa and travelled inland to be the first Europeans to reach Lake Tanganyika in 1858. Speke left the expedition and headed north and eventually reached Lake Victoria, which he concluded was the source of the Nile. This theory was disputed in England by many, including Burton himself. In 1860, Speke, together with James Grant, mapped part of Lake Victoria. In 1862, found Ripon Falls, a Nile exit from the lake. He also provided Samuel White Baker with information that helped him to discover Lake Albert Nyanza in 1863. His

The son of a colonel, Burton was born in Torquay and had an irregular education - in France and Italy and at Oxford, from which he was expelled. From 1842, he served for seven years in the Indian Army, first in Sind (now in south-east Pakistan) under Sir Charles Napier. In 1853, he made a pilgrimage to Mecca, disguised in Afghani dress, becoming one of the first Europeans to visit the holy Muslim city. He later also 'discovered' the sacred city of Harar in Ethiopia and, in 1855, led a foray into Somalia, accompanied by Speke. Just before he left England for his search for the source of the Nile, he became engaged to Isabel Arundell, who as his wife would be his greatest defender. At the age of 36, at the time of the expedition with Speke, Burton was one of the great minds and most remarkable personalities of the Victorian era - an author, explorer, scientist and poet. A brilliant linguist, he mastered over 30 languages, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hindi and Swahili. He wrote 43 books, translated the Arabian Nights, The Perfumed Garden
