Long track skaters training on the speedskating oval in Lake Placid. We can't help but admire the elite speedskater's level of fitness in the remarkable definition and development of their infamous quadriceps. Certainly this is a sport that requires finely tuned skills and incredible physical fitness; however, enjoyment of the sport is not limited to Olympic-bound athletes. Speedskating consists of two unique disciplines: long track and short track. Long Track
In long-track speedskating, the skaters speed around a 400-meter oval (one lap is approximately 1/4 mile). There are both indoor and outdoor long tracks. The most accessible full-size long track in the Adirondack region is the outdoor Olympic Speedskating Oval in the heart of the village of Lake Placid. The track is frozen and ready for use from late November though March. Long-track speedskating is a "beat-the-clock" format. Typically during meets, two skaters race around the track simultaneously. Race distances vary from 500 to 10,000 meters (.31 miles to 6.2 miles) and many skaters compete in multiple race lengths (which is how both Eric Heiden and Bonnie Blair won a legendary five Olympic gold medals each). Long track requires tremendous power, stamina, discipline and inner strength.

From the Olympics Toward Tomorrow On the making of a city Sport culture
What's to become of local skating rinks?
The "Crazy Ducks" were organized in September 1995. Sponsors of youth ice hockey in Nagano City say their goal is to create parent-child teams in order to simply have fun adults together with children. Kiyoharu Sato (age 46), a Nagano City business owner who manages the league says, "It would be pretty boring to stand around at practice in the cold. So, we decided to play at local rinks." Most of the players are new to the sport, but in January they invited a parent-child team from Chiba Prefecture and had their first inter-league game. Sato says, "Parents and their children end up having conversations on the same subjects. I think through these kind of activities the kids will end up being good kids until they 'leave the nest.'" Members of the "Crazy Ducks" talk during a break in practice. How will the Olympics raise our awareness of winter sport culture? (photo taken at the Olympic venue "Big Hat") The number of ice hockey enthusiasts has been increasing recently due to the draw of the Olympics. When Nagano was picked in 1986 as "Japan's Choice" for the Winter Games, there were six teams in Nagano City. Now, eleven years later, there are 24.

All Ages, All Skill Levels The long and short of it is...ice speedskating is a sport for all ages and skill levels, from the beginning novice through Olympic and world class speedskaters. Whether you choose entry level skating, are looking for a recreational experience or a viable cross training alternative, or want a chance at the Olympic rings, speedskating offers unique developmental opportunities for athletic involvement and success. The world's fastest self-propelled sport, speedskating is regulated by U. S. Speedskating. Primarily a volunteer-driven organization, this national governing body promotes the grassroots development of speedskating in cooperation with 19 state associations and some 100 local clubs throughout the United States. From New York to Florida to California, from Hawaii to Alaska, the clubs provide practice times, training and coaching and positive support for skaters of all levels, including skaters with special needs. The local club system provides an excellent opportunity for family involvement. In fact, speedskating is known as a family sport, a time to learn about common interests and contribute to child's positive athletic experience.
