Sylvie Daigle Speed Skating
Sylvie Daigle, a young energetic woman who loves challenges, was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1962. The youngest in a family of six children, she grew up with her four sisters and her adopted brother. A competitive nature fueled her interest in, among other things, sports traditionally practised by men such as touch football, baseball and hockey. Moreover, it was her interest in this team sport on ice that indirectly started her on the path towards speed skating. Wishing to register for the women’s hockey team, she went to the local arena where she discovered that the trainer intended to form a speed-skating club. Naturally gifted for this dangerous sport, she decided to devote herself to it and started training diligently. It was then, at the age of nine, that Sylvie Daigle discovered, by chance, her passion for a sport that she was to practise relentlessly for 15 years. Since 1979, she has participated, and triumphed, in long-track events during the Canada Winter Games, winning gold in the 500-metre, 1000-metre and 1500-metre competitions. The following year in Lake Placid, Sylvie Daigle fully immersed herself in the Olympic adventure and finished 19th in the 500-metre. At Sarajevo, she was 20th in the 500-metre, 25th in the 1000-metre and 22nd in the 1500-metre. Far from living up to her expectations, these performances disappointed the athlete who, in 1985 and 1987, underwent two operations aimed at relieving the pain in her knees. These muscular problems, from which Sylvie suffered since 1983, led her to re-direct her career. Consequently, in 1987, she decided to devote herself to short-track speed skating, which was introduced the following year as a demonstration sport at the Olympic Games in Calgary.

Spotlight On Schools Featured Columnists Letters ... April 2001 New York City March 2002 Chris Witty: Gold Olympic Speed Skater “Whatever, man.” Chris Witty’s favorite saying, reflecting her legendarily laid-back attitude, served her well in winning the gold medal in the 1,000 meter speed-skating event at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics last month. Yes, in order to win her third Olympic medal—she has also won a silver and a bronze in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan—Witty had to overcome a lot. Mainly mononucleosis, a disease she did not even find out she had until a month before her big skate. “All I knew was I was tired all the time,” she said. “And so were my times in practice. I was actually relieved to find out something was really wrong with me. I was going to cry, but then I said to myself ‘that’s stupid. You just have to push your way through this like you’ve done with everything else.’” Witty has already proven she can push herself to miracles. Besides being the most decorated woman speed-skater in the U.S., the 31 year old from West Allis, Wisconsin has also competed in the Sydney Summer Olympics in cycling – finishing fifth in the 500-meter time trial – an almost unbelievable exacta.

Some Key Dates in ISU History
The International Skating Union (ISU) was founded in 1892 and is the oldest governing international winter sport federation. During the last half of the nineteenth century, informal international competitions in both Speed Skating and Figure Skating were organized occasionally in different parts of the world. The first modern Speed Skating competition was held in Norway in 1863 and the first major International Speed Skating race was held in Hamburg (GER) in 1885. In 1882, the first International Figure Skating competition took place in Vienna (AUT). With the emergence of international competitions, in both Speed Skating and Figure Skating, as well as the forming of skating clubs and of national associations, the need to establish international standards to govern these sports became more and more apparent. In July 1892, the Dutch association took the lead in calling for a meeting of representatives of all countries interested in international ice skating competitions. As a result, the first Congress convened in Scheveningen (NED) and the ISU was created. The fifteen delegates present at the time, all from Europe, began to establish firm rules, laying down the foundations for international competitions in both disciplines. With the addition of Canada as a Member in 1894, the ISU expanded its horizons to become a truly international governing body. Since the foundation of the ISU the ice skating disciplines have developed steadily over time to occupy the significant role they now enjoy in the world of sport.

Elite skate team calls Roseville its home
Wolverines feature some of world's fastest
October 9, 2003 BY KRISTA LATHAM FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Maybe you've never seen an inline speed skating event. But you can picture it. Imagine a typical roller rink with small orange cones set in an oval around the middle to create a track along the outer ridge. Now imagine those speed ice skaters you watched in the Olympics, complete with full-body spandex, plastic helmets and swanky skates but with wheels, not blades. The skaters are bent at the waist, sailing along with that side-to-side leg sweep and arm swing. That's inline speed skating. And at Great Skate Roller Rink in Roseville, some of the best inline speed skaters meet twice a week to circle the rink in a blur. Kids as young as 5 and men and women as old as 60, all wearing spandex, skate together in one line, a train of skaters speeding along under the flickering red and blue disco lights. These are the Great Skate Wolverines, one of the most decorated inline teams in the country.

I have recently taken up inline speed skating for fun. If you don't know what I'm talking about at all, there's a great wikipedia article about inline speed skating. If you don't feel like reading the article, the main thing to note is that inline speed skating is done on skates with wheels, NOT on ice skates. Also, see below for a helpful description of roller speedskating taken from Derek Parra's autobiography, Reflections in the Ice.

Racing headfirst on a sleigh at 90 miles per hour and skiing with a gun. These aren't things your crazy uncle does - they're Olympic sports. Here's a look at some of the weird winter sports you'll see at the 2002 Olympics. Skeleton
Skeleton is being held at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1948. This was the world's first sliding sport. Riders slide on a small metal sled with two runners. The sport was given its name in 1892 when the new metal sled was introduced and everyone thought it looked like a skeleton. Riders do risk being nothing but a pile of bones by the end of a run since they ride head first at speeds nearing 90 miles per hour. In 2002, women will compete in this sport for the first time. Biathlon
Biathlon combines two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitors are given points for how fast they ski and how accurate they can shoot. The sport originally started out as a survival strategy. People in Northern Europe would ski with guns to hunt for food and defend their countries. In the biathlon that takes place at the Winter Olympics, competitors just Snowball Fights shoot at targets - not animals or each other.

The Olympic Effect Piqued interest in ice sports can help rinks go for the green By Stacy St. Clair PHOTOS COURTESY OF JERRY SEARCH/SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SPEED SKATING ASSOCIATION When Salt Lake City organizers extinguished the Olympic flame in February, the United States bid farewell to its most successful Winter Games ever. The gold rush, however, is far from over. Ice arena managers have been inundated with phone calls from wannabe Olympians, who are inquiring about everything from skating to hockey to curling. Interest is so high, the sports' national governing bodies are struggling to keep up with the demand. "It has been incredible," says Karen Kostal, membership services coordinator for the Amateur Speedskating Association. "I don't know if we are going to experience anything like this again." With ice arenas nationwide poised to mine their own gold, facility managers would be wise to turn to experts for assistance. The athletic associations and rinks that produced our latest Olympic heroes are eager to help develop new programs and, in return, build a stronger winter sports tradition. The assistance varies from sport to sport and includes everything from monetary grants to technical advice to moral support. "We're willing to do anything," Kostal says. "Use us. Use us. Use us."

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected an appeal by the South Korean delegation against the disqualification of Olympic speed skater Kim Dong-Sung. South Korea went to the arbitration court after their 1,500m short track speed skater was disqualified from Wednesday's final for impeding America's Apolo Anton Ohno. But a CAS tribunal met on Friday night and decided to reject the protest. The South Koreans are still considering taking their case to a US district court.

Korean spokesman They have also appealed to the International Olympic Committee over the result. Meanwhile, South Korea's top Olympic official said his team will not boycott the closing ceremony, despite earlier reports. The Korean delegation wanted to make a stand over what they perceived to be biased judging.
