History
Short track speed skating was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics and became a medal sport in 1992. This form of the sport is also known as "pack style," because a pack of four skaters compete on a 111.12-meter track, with the winner being the first to cross the finish line. The four corners of the course are marked by rubber blocks. Skaters are allowed to enter the infield, but they have to pass outside the markers on the turns. A series of elimination heats are held, leading to the semi-finals and finals. Semi-final losers compete in their own final to determine fifth through eighth places. Top of page

Lands of Ice and Snow
Ancient people in northern climates adapted to a land of ice and snow. Over 2,000 years ago they discovered that reindeer bones connected to foot coverings could be used to travel quickly across the ice. The first ice skates were used as a means of transportation allowing people to travel farther and faster. Speed Skating
Over the centuries skate technology has improved. With modern equipment skaters move faster and have more control. Skating for speed has become a popular competition and is an exciting spectator sport. The object of speed skating is to reach a specific distance in the fastest time. Skaters are taught key techniques that include: the basic position, push, recovery, glides and arms swing. Speed skaters glide on the flat of the blade and push with the full leg extension for power and speed. Speed Skating Facilities
People speed skate on frozen lakes, ponds and on inside rinks. A special skating oval is designed for Olympic competition. The 400-meter oval designed for "Olympic Style" skating has three lanes that are four to five meters wide. Rubber markers define the lanes. The inside lane is used for warm-ups. Short Track Individual Event
There are several types of speed skating. Short track skating is a unique sport where skaters compete in individual and relay competitions. In the individual event, four skaters start together on the same line. The first skater to cross the finish line is declared the winner. They race head-to-head in an oval. Seven rubber blocks in each turn mark the course. Skaters may cross into the infield ice, but they must always skate around the blocks in the corners. They may touch the ice inside the blocks with their hands.

Olympic Oval Short Track Program
Short track speed skating debuted as a demonstration sport during the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games. In 1991, short track was added to Olympic Oval programming. This fast moving, dynamic sport has become immensely popular around the world. As a result, the Oval short track program continues to grow and develop, as more skaters join in.

This level is comprised of elite level skaters (all male) who have made the National Team or the Development National Team or are potential National Team athletes (we could also see some of the top International athletes making that group). National Team athletes represent their country at World Championships, Olympic games, and World Cup competitions. The 2003-2004 Canadian National Team will include the top eight male and female skaters based on their results from all three trials (Trials #1 in December, Trials #2 in March and Trials #3 in April)

Long Track History
Olympic speed skating, or long track as it is known today, made its debut at the first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France and it has been a highlight of the Games ever since. Early Olympic competition was dominated by the Finns and Norwegians; however, the Americans invariably provided stiff competition. Canada's first Olympic speed skating medals were won in 1932 in Lake Placid. The medal count was one silver and four bronze for the men while the women, competing in demonstration events, captured one gold and two silver medals. A star of those Games was the legendary Lela Brooks, who in 1925 set six world records and in 1926 became the first all-around world champion. By the late 1930s, popular interest in speed skating began to decline; and as hockey arenas were built, professional hockey hastened the diminishing spectator appeal of the sport. The advent of World War II also took a toll on the popularity of Canadian speed skating. When Olympic competition resumed in 1948, the Norwegians remained the skaters to beat. However, at the 1952 Oslo Games Canada's Gordon Audley brought home the 500 m bronze medal. By 1956 at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, speed skaters from the Soviet Union (absent from Olympic competition for 48 years) ended the Norwegian stranglehold on Olympic speed skating. The Canadians were shut out and would have to wait until 1976 to mount the victor's podium once again.

http://www.busybwebdesign.com/meaghanbuisson/definition.htm
Understanding the Sport of Inline Speed Skating "...it's impossible to describe the incredible feeling that comes from being in the midst of a seething pack of humanity all straining to their utmost to succeed. The mass start of an inline skating race is a riotous display of colour and sound. Skates clash and bodies are thrown against one another as each skater surges forwards off the line. And then as suddenly as the chaos starts, order ensues. Skaters flow together as one, while each team strains to go faster, faster, faster still..." May 2002 journal entry, written by M. Buisson
2002 Pan American Championships; Cartegena, Colombia Is an inline speed skater the same thing as a really fast 'Rollerblader'? In one word, NO!!! Inline speed skating is a sport in which people race while wearing inline speed skates. Rollerblade is a company that manufactures inline skates. Calling every inline skater a rollerblader is the verbal equivalent of saying everyone who drives a car should be called a "Ford-er", "GMC-er" or "Chrysler"! Top inline speed skaters routinely attain speeds of over 40km/hour. Although the fastest speed ever recorded for a solo inline skater is 101km/hour (63 miles/hour) by Doug Lucht in 1998, this speed is not the fastest speed ever attained on skates. By racing in packs in order to reduce wind resistance, countless inline speed skaters attain race speeds of over 100km/hour (60 miles/hour)!

So it is with Jondon Trevena, age 28. An Olympian at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, he's surfaced before. Speed Skating is Fall sport (September - December) for Special Olympics Hawaii. Oahu athletes train and compete over a 3 month period at the Ice Palace (The only skating rink in Hawaii). Athletes compete in a "Regional" qualifying competition in order to compete at the Holiday Classic in December Despite Hawaii's warm climate speed skating is a popular sport among Special Olympics Hawaii's' school age athletes. Many athletes transfer already learned skills from roller blading directly to speed skating skills on the ice. In faster heats, Special Olympics speed skaters may reach speeds of up to 32 kilometers per hour. Special Olympics also offers events for lower ability level athletes to train and compete in basic speed skating skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to longer competitive events. Events include 50, 100, and 300 (3 laps) races. Lower ability and new skaters have the option of using a skate aid in the 50 and 100 meter races. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.

Now the fastest human-powered sport on the planet, speed skating took off quietly enough on the frozen canals of medieval Holland. 13th century races were eventually exported to neighboring European countries, where during the winter months skaters competed to see who could glide over the ice the fastest - and still maintain their upright footing at the finish. The sport really began to take off in the 19th century, when the first official speed skating competition took place in Oslo in 1863, leading up to a major international competition in Hamburg some 20 years later. As a result, the International Skating Union was founded in 1892 in Holland, the birthplace of speed skating, to establish worlwide regulations governing the sport. Speed skating has been part of the Winter Games since the first in Chamonix in 1924. Women skaters were only allowed to enter the competition beginning in 1960 at the Squaw Vally Games.
