So What Will It Look Like If Roller Sports Makes It Into the 2012 Olympics?
Roller Sports Proposes a Short Program of Outdoor Speed Skating By Robert "The Train's in the Station" Burnson In the hopes of winning a berth in the 2012 Olympics, roller sports officials have submitted a bare-bones, budget-minded proposal that includes a quick two days of competition and only one of the roller disciplines speed skating. The International Roller Sports Federation submitted the proposal to the International Olympic Committee late last year. The proposal calls for an abbreviated version of the closed-circuit road racing portion of the annual Inline World Championships. Four Events Included are four events: a 300 meter time trial, a 500 meter sprint, a 5 kilometer race, and a 20 kilometer elimination. (More about these later.) All the races would be skated on an outdoor loop 400 and 600 meters around.

Olympic Inclusion: Roller Sports Gets Mixed Review in Olympic Sports Report Report Cites Low Worldwide Distribution; Lack of Coordination With "TV-Friendly" Teen Skating By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson The Olympic Programme Commission gave roller sports a mixed review in its report of the 28 current and five prospective sports for the 2012 Summer Games. The report, released today by the International Olympic Committee, cites roller sports' relatively low worldwide reach, small media draw and small revenues. It also notes that "teenage skating activities" by which it means aggressive skating or skateboarding "are outside the control of" roller sports' governing body. Another Sports Also Get Dinged But while the report notes the sports' shortcomings, it also points out problems with the other four Olympic contenders: golf, karate, rugby and squash. It notes that some of the best golfers in the world might choose to skip the Olympics. Why? Because the Olympics would interfere with their lucrative PGA tour.

is one of just nine American athletes ever to compete in the Olympic Summer and Winter Games, participating in cycling and speed skating. She was the United States' most decorated athlete at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, earning two speed skating medals, and she promptly followed that up with a solid performance in cycling at the 2000 Summer Games. But away from the track, she may be one of the most laid-back people you'll ever meet - 'Whatever, man' serves as one of her typical utterances. While the 2002 Winter Olympics were being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, our second graders had many activities in Phy Ed class which were patterned after Olympic events. Students participated in curling, bob sledding, giant slalom skiing, ice hockey, cross country skiing, and mogul skiing. Because they enjoyed their activities, students decided that Winter Olympic sports would be a good topic for their graph. Children and adults in the Milwaukee area were very involved in watching and talking about the Olympics because many of the skaters trained here at the Petit Ice Center. Chris Witty, who won the gold medal for speed skating, and several other famous skaters including Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen, are from our area. To make their graph, students talked about popular Winter Olympic sports and why people liked them the most. Students nominated and voted for their top five favorite Winter Olympic sports then voted again for their individual favorites out of the five choices. The graph was made using AppleWorks with the matching graphics inserted to create the border. We worked together to create three questions which could be answered by using information on the graph. Have fun answering our questions!

Background - 2006 Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympic Games, Winter Olympics for short but more correctly The Olympic Winter Games, are the cold-weather counterpart to the Summer Olympic Games. They feature winter sports held on ice or snow, such as ice skating and skiing.
The Winter Olympics are held every four years. The most recent celebration was in Salt Lake City, United States in 2002. The Italian city of Turin (Torino) will host the next Winter Olympics in 2006, and after that the games will be held in Vancouver, Canada in 2010.
When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established in 1894, one of the sports proposed for the program was ice skating. However, no skating was conducted at the Olympics until the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, which featured four figure skating events. Ulrich Salchow (10-fold World champion) and Madge Syers (the first competitive woman figure skater) won the individual titles with ease.

Last year, Lyubov Nikulina, a speed-skating coach at the Olympic Reserve College for winter sports, spent 42 days on the train. Each round-trip ticket represented days away from her two sons, as she accompanied her students to competitions all over the country. "I'm used to this kind of life," Nikulina said. "It's my work." The St. Petersburg Olympic Reserve College, or ORC, is one of 34 similar schools throughout Russia, all dedicated to preparing the country's future athletic elite. This year, 11 graduates including figure skaters Anton Sikharulidze, Yelena Berezhnaya, Maria Petrova and Tatiana Totmyanina; speed skaters Svetlana Zhurova and Dmitry Shepel; and others - are on the Russian team in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nonetheless, such schools are struggling to maintain their previous prestige as participation in sports has fallen nationally from about 30 percent to less than 10 percent over the last decade. The gray brick building of the school stands almost hidden among the trees on the outskirts of the city. Nearly empty because its students are training at various winter resorts, the school betrays no hint of the fact that future sports legends are being molded here.

    History
The sport of short track speed skating originates in the speed skating events held with mass starts. This form of speed skating was mainly practised in the United States and Canada , as opposed to the international form, where skaters skated in pairs. At the Olympic Winter Games , speed skating events were conducted in mass start form. Competitions in North America were also held indoors, for example in Madison Square Garden New York , and therefore on shorter tracks than was usual for outdoor skating. In , the International Skating Union (ISU) adopted short track speed skating, although it would take some time before it started to organise international events, in .
