WINTER OLYMPICS SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1992 SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING races began to occur in Europe shortly after speed skating became an established international sport. The International Skating Union was founded in 1892, three years after the first long-track World Championships. Prior to the arrival of short track at the Olympics, it was common for skaters to compete in short and long-track events. Short track ovals were covered and offered a place for skaters to train all year. Many long-track racers would practice sprinting and turning techniques around the small oval. Some even competed in short track competitions. With the development of new indoor long-track facilities, the cross-sport training is not as popular anymore. Also, now that short track has become established as an Olympic sport, racers have been forced to specialize to succeed. Short track speed skating made its first Olympic appearance at the 1988 Calgary Games as a demonstration sport and featured 10 events. The sport's popularity was immediately apparent. The IOC admitted short track to the Olympic program in 1992 but limited it to one individual and one relay event for men and women in Albertville (men's 1000 meters, women's 500, and the men's and women's relays).

WINTER OLYMPICS SPEED SKATING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1924 It is believed that skates were developed about 3000 years ago in Scandinavia. In the Netherlands, skating served as a way to travel over the canals in winter and the Dutch are still among the world's most avid skaters. Although the Netherlands is the birthplace of speed skating, the first known skating competition is thought to have been held in 1676. Competitions sprung up across the northern part of Europe shortly after, but the first official speed skating events were not held until 1863 in Oslo, Norway. In 1889, the Netherlands hosted the first World Championships, bringing together the Dutch, Russians, Americans and English. SPEED SKATING was staged at the 1924 Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix Mont Blanc and has been on the Olympic Winter program since. Women first competed in the sport at the Olympic Games in 1932 when it was a demonstration event. Women's speed skating as a full medal discipline began in 1960. The women's 5000 meters was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be competed in Salt Lake City. Olympic speed skating has almost always been staged using the European system of skating time trials in two-man pairs. In 1932 in Lake Placid, the Americans convinced the ISU to hold the events using the North American style of pack racing. This resulted in the boycott of many Europeans, and the Americans won all four gold medals. This system, however, would later develop into short-track speed skating, which was added to the Olympic programme in 1992.

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

    Jansen persevered despite Olympic disappointments
    By Lisette Hilton
    Special to ESPN.com
"[Dan Jansen] began to be portrayed as kind of a heartbreak kid because this may be the greatest speed skater that ever put on skates never to have won an Olympic medal. And that would have meant that he was one of the biggest chokers of all time," says sports psychologist Dr. Jim Loehr on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. A talented and powerful speed skater, Dan Jansen won world sprint championships, topped World Cup standings and set world records. Yet the challenges that haunted the four-time Olympian were what made the headlines and broke the hearts of his family, fans and even competitors. Dan Jansen of the USA wins his first gold medal at the 1994 Olympics in the 1000 meter speed skating competition with a new world record time of 1:12.43. From the death of his sister on the day of an Olympic race to illness and poor performances when it counted most, it seemed as if Jansen was destined never to win gold at the Games. But then in 1994, competing in his last Olympics, the skating gods finally smiled on Jansen and watched as he won the 1,000-meter race at Lillehammer, Norway. Jansen was born on June 17, 1965 in West Allis, Wis., a suburb of Milwaukee. He was the youngest of nine children born to Harry Jansen, a police officer, and Gerry Jansen, a nurse.

    Origins

For Northern Europeans 1000 years ago, ice skating was a method of transportation over the frozen canals and waterways. But as skates transformed from animal bones tied to shoes to iron-bladed boots, skating evolved into a competitive sport. In 1763, the world's first organized speed skating race was held in England.
Canada's first recorded race took place on the St.Lawrence River in 1854 when three army officers raced from Montreal to Quebec City. By 1887, the Amateur Skating Association of Canada was formed and the first official championship was held. Canada was the first non-European country to join the International Skating Union in 1894. The Canadian Amateur Speed Skating Association changed its name to Speed Skating Canada in 2000.
    The Sport
In long track, skaters race in pairs counterclockwise on two lanes of a 400m oval track, and change lanes every lap to even out the distance. The skater moving from the outer lane to the inner lane has the right of way when both skaters exit the corner simultaneously. They are not allowed to skate inside their individual lane markers and while their skate may cross the lane line when enterinng a corner, the gliding skate (the one bearing the skater's weight) must remain outside.
The selection of pairs is done by a draw the night before the race, and a random draw decides the starting lanes and starting order. The skaters race against the clock and the one with the fastest time wins.

The 1988 Olympic Winter Games marked its debut as a demonstration event and full-medal status folowed out the 1992 Alberville Games.
    The Sport
In short track, competition takes place on a 111.12-metre oval track with a mass start of four to six skaters. Starting positions are drawn and the first skater to reach the finish line wins. Strategy and tactics play a big part in the race, and it's often the smartest skater who wins, not the fastest. Skaters must finish among the top two in their heats, quarter finals and semifinals to qualify for the finals.

In the last years, more than 100 million skates have been sold in the whole planet and at present, everybody can see skaters in parks and in streets of all the cities of the world because where there is an inhabited place, the legend says that there is skates. In its beginning it was just a game for children, then it was a motive of sport in high performance when the international championships were developed and now, beside supporting its first two qualities, it is a fantastic way of transportation in many places of the world: for example in San Juan (Puerto Rico), Mar del Plata (Argentina), Amsterdam (Holland), Paris (France), Stockholm (Sweden), Miami ( United States) and Caracas (Venezuela). It is used by the police and in the European cities for a famous chain of supermarkets..
