104. U.S. Speedskating History
Speedskating has produced more olympic medals than any other sport, as well asseveral of the greatest feats in Winter olympic history.
http://www.usspeedskating.org/geninfo/history.html
No one knows for certain where skating originated. We do know that the skate found its origins in the ski, or snowshoe, which was used by the Vikings to maneuver across snow-covered ground.
The skate was a logical development, allowing the Viking to cross frozen lakes. In fact, archeologists have found Viking-made skates in many regions of Europe known to be seats of Viking power, including England, Germany, Switzerland and other nations.
The sport of speedskating itself is one of many that derived its recreational nature from its practical value. Like cycling, running and sailing, laborers and children "speedskated" every day as a part of their work or transportation regimen.
In Scandinavia, primitive hunters used crude skates made from animal bones to hunt wild animals across the fjords and icy terrain. Skates shaped from bones of elk, horse and reindeer have been found by archaeologists in the area of Bjoko, Sweden. The bone skate was fastened with straps to a boot made from animal skins. In the fourteenth century, highly waxed wood replaced bone as the material of choice for skate blades. However, neither bone nor wood provided any edge for the blade, and so a long pole was required to direct the skater across the ice.
And so, the evolution of speedskating into a "sport" was a progression. And once it had developed as such, speedskating rapidly became a favorite among Europeans, particularly the Dutch. The first of the three forms of skating (speedskating, figure skating and hockey) to develop into a sport, speedskating advanced so quickly in Holland that its current form is very much like that in which the Dutch participated in the 1500s. Very little has changed.

In 1980, Eric Heiden was one of the lucky ones; he got to witness the ‘Miracle on Ice’ live and in person in Lake Placid. He was so excited that he overslept the next morning and nearly missed his final event at the speedskating oval, but he made it in time to win his fifth individual Olympic gold medal, a feat many considered to be the greatest Olympic performance in history. Here’s what the man with the tree-trunk legs did in an eight-day period, 25 years ago this week. He won the 500, 1,000, 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000-meters with five Olympic records and one world record, defeating Olympic champions and world record-holders in three of the five races. No other Olympian has ever won five individual gold medals in one Olympic Games.

Who Speedskates
What Is Speedskating When Can I Speedskate ... Books/Resources Links To: US Speedskating is a member of:
What Is Speedskating? Speedskating is going on your skates as fast as you can, as far as you can, for fun! It's racing across the ice, either to beat your previous personal best time, or someone else, or to just enjoy the sensation of gliding smoothly with the wind on your face. What do you want it to be?
As a speedskater, you can choose among many different paths to take of even mix and combine them! The major types of speedskating are:
Short Track (done on a "short" track, usually 111 to 100 meters long, inside any regular size hockey rink)
Long Track (done on championship size ovals of 400 meters, or on tracks set up on outdoor natural ice that range anywhere from 100 meters to over 1000 meters)
Marathon skating (done either on 400meter oval tracks or natural lakes and rivers on tracks of varying size)
Some skaters choose to only skate recreationally and not race. They practice, get coaching, work on their technique, work out to get and stay fit, or cross train for other sports. Other skaters like the thrill of racing and compete at a level in line with their ability. Competitions are available for novices on up through world level throughout the U.S. during the season in all forms of speedskating - short track, long track, and marathon. In addition, competitions are organized into different formats you can choose from. "Pack style" is the most common with a group of skaters going to line all at once and racing each other for a finish position. "Time trials" or "metric style" competitions are also held where skaters compete only against the clock and themselves. Skaters can be grouped by age class and/or ability to provide a fair and rewarding experience for all participants.
