U.S. Speedskating is a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the International Skating Union (ISU). Originally known as the United States International Speedskating Association (USISA), the organization adopted the name U.S. Speedskating in 1993. U.S. Speedskating Long Track Rules U.S. Speedskating Short Track Rules Speedskating History No one knows for certain where skating originated. We do know that the skate found its origins in the ski, or snowshoe, which was used by the Vikings to maneuver across snow-covered ground.
The skate was a logical development, allowing the Viking to cross frozen lakes. In fact, archeologists have found Viking-made skates in many regions of Europe known to be seats of Viking power, including England, Germany, Switzerland and other nations.
The sport of speedskating itself is one of many that derived its recreational nature from its practical value. Like cycling, running and sailing, laborers and children "speedskated" every day as a part of their work or transportation regimen.

Ice Dancing
Ice dancing developed from ballroom dancing, particularly the waltz, and was very popular in the early 1900s. It requires well-disciplined, precise footwork; conformity with each other’s steps; and a keen sense of timing and rhythm. Ice dancing differs from pairs skating in that ice dancers are restricted to lifts no higher than the man’s shoulders, and there are no jumps. One skate must be on the ice at all times. Ice dancing competitions consist of three principal parts: compulsories original dance , and free dance . In compulsories, partners must perform two dances selected by the ISU, for example, waltz, tango, or polka. Compulsories involve set patterns in which dancers execute and repeat steps at certain points around the arena. Although the steps are predetermined, dancers are encouraged to interpret them for artistic appeal. Each compulsory dance counts for 10 percent of a pair’s final score.

Special to ESPN.com
The story of her March 18, 1964 birth sounds like a fairy tale. The heroine's dad, Charlie, who had fathered four speed skaters among his five children, decided it would be better if he took the kids to a meet while mom gave birth. Charlie, the timer at the meet in Yonkers, N.Y., heard the public-address announcer tell the crowd, "It looks like Charlie's family has just added another skater." That baby became the fastest U.S. speed skater who ever lived. Bonnie Blair pumps her way to the 500-meter gold medal in the 1994 Olympics at Lillehammer. When the story is told, few believe it. "I know," Bonnie Blair says with a laugh. "But it's true. In those days husbands really weren't allowed in the delivery room. So dad figured instead of waiting for me to be born, since mom had been through this five times before, that he'd take the rest of the kids to a skating meet. ... So I was just a few hours old when I got my first loudspeaker announcement." She has gotten quite a few since, especially at the Olympics. Circling the globe, from Calgary to Albertville to Lillehammer, she picked up souvenirs that no other woman from the United States possesses. While diamonds are rumored to be a girl's best friend, Blair prefers gold, as in five Olympic gold medals.

Glorious traditions of the Ukrainian Skating Sport Federation are rooted in the distant past. It was in 1952 when the Ukrainian Skating Sport Federation was founded and this enabled the world to learn about such outstanding skating sportsmen as three times world champion Oleg Goncharenko (Kharkov), absolute world champion Vera Brynzey (Ivano-Frankovsk), world champion Tatiana Tarasova ( Kiev), European championship prize winner Valentina Lalenkova (Kiev), Irina Fateyeva, Yuriy Kondakov, Tatiana Shelekhova - prize winners and participants of the Olympic Games, world championships and other international competitions.
Since 1976, when skating stadium equipped with the skating track with artificial freezing was put into operation in Kiev, the Federation managed to bring up a new generation of skating sportsmen - two times world champion among juniors Valeriy Guk , world record holders Alexander Antipov, Roman Popadchuk , world championship prize winners, world and European championship and Olympic Games participants Yuriy Shulga, Vitaliy Makovetsky, Boris Uvarov, Victor Morozov, Oleg Kostromitin, Lesia Belozub, Andrey Gutovskiy, Svetlana Konstantinova

If "Mainstream" Educators Trained Olympic Athletes (A Peek Into the Future)
Richard P. Phelps
[originally posted January 2002] [Summer, 2002] After the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, the U.S. Olympic Committee met for its annual retreat to learn the latest findings from advanced research in education, and to determine if some of the new, groundbreaking ideas, developed in the country's most prestigious education schools, might be appropriate to their own training needs. The retreat agenda was developed by the leadership of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), with input from leading education researchers and theorists in the faculties of the country's leading universities. As a group, they had published hundreds of books, thousands of articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, and given thousands of paper presentations at research conferences all over the world. The retreat team also included most of the staff from the prestigious, federally-funded Center for Research on Essential Skiing and Skating Techniques (CRESST), based at UCLA, and the National Research Council's Board on Athletics and Measurement. The particular theme chosen for the retreat was speed skating performance management and measurement. The AERA instructors argued that traditional methods amounted to an artificial training of speed skaters, one distanced from the experience of the skaters and the knowledge base of the trainers. Natural, genuine training had been supplanted by activities whose sole purpose was to reduce the times of speed skaters in particular races. That led to "drill and kill" training techniques, not appropriate to the development of the "whole athlete." Scarce training dollars had been diverted away from such high quality training needs as better skates, higher pay for trainers, and nicer ice rinks in favor of skating drills of limited training value. Skaters were even being made to skate in conditions strikingly similar to actual races, which was far removed from a natural and authentic way of skating.

[Olympics Main] [Getting In Shape] [Safety Tips] ... [Ice Hockey] HISTORY When people think of contemporary figure skating they envision the beauty of graceful balletic movements and the power of athletic jumps and spins performed to beautiful, moving music. These elements, coupled with flowing designer costumes and the distinctive swish of blades cutting ice as the athletes crisscross the arena in the heightened tension of competition, engender figure skating as we know it today. The origins of skating, however, were much more banal. Early man, out of the necessity of traversing frozen bodies of water, developed makeshift skates by binding the rib bones of elk or reindeer antlers to their feet with leather straps as a means of transportation across these icy surfaces. Even today the Dutch word for skate is schenkel , which means leg bone . The oldest pair of skates were found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland and have been determined to be over 4,000 years old. These skates now reside in a museum in Berne, Switzerland.

Today, Bonnie Blair is a favorite on the lecture circuit with her highly motivating speech on "Achieving Your Personal Best". Success under pressure is the measure of a true champion. There are numerous winners in the world of sports but the celebrated athletes are the few who meet the challenge of pressure time after time. Bonnie Blair is undoubtedly celebrated as the speedskater who produces her best performances when it counts the most. Bonnie began her race in the 500 meter event of the 1988 Calgary Olympics immediately after her rival Christa Rothenburger of East Germany set a world record. Not to be outdone, Bonnie proceeded to skate the 500 meters faster than any woman had before or has since, capturing the gold medal in a world record time of 39.1. This record stood for 5 years until March 1994, when at the age of 30, Blair met her ultimate goal of shattering the 39 second mark with a time of 38.99.

Blair has won more medals than any other American in Winter Olympics history. She has smashed world speed skating records and was Sports Illustrated 's 1994 Sportsperson of the Year. But to her children, 6-year-old Grant and 4-year old Blair, she's just "Mom," and that is the way that Bonnie Blair likes it. "I retired from skating to do other things, like have a family," says 40-year-old Blair. "I love being a mother. Being there to share in those first-time events, being able to make their hurts go away, all those precious little moments that come with being a mom." Motherhood obviously agrees with Blair, as does her marriage to retired speed skater, Dave Cruikshank. She has forged a nice balance between motherhood and her desire to remain active in her sport. She does occasional commentator work for speed skating events and is on the board of directors for both the U.S. Speed Skating Association and The Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, Wis.

China and the olympic Movement sending 28 athletes to compete in a total of18 events, such as speed skating, figure skating, and crosscountry skiing.
http://www.china.org.cn/english/null/116819.htm
China and the Olympic Movement The earliest involvement between China and the Olympics dates back to 1894 when Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern event, and the then Greek prince issued an invitation to Qing Dynasty rulers through the French Embassy in China. They asked them to send athletes to the first Modern Olympiad, to be held in Athens in 1896, but the Qing government didn't reply due to their unfamiliarity with sports events. In 1904, some Chinese newspapers reported stories about the third Olympics, which were held in St Louis in the United States. In 1906, a domestic magazine introduced the history of the Olympic movement to readers. On October 24, 1907, the renowned educationist Zhang Boling delivered a speech on the Olympics after a sports meet in Tianjin. He said China should learn from European countries that sent their athletes to compete in the Olympics, regardless of the results. After the fourth Olympiad concluded in London in 1908, Tianjin Youth magazine covered the history of the events and suggested that China should hold its own version. Some activists showed slides from the London Olympics and gave speeches on it. Between October 18 and 24, 1910, the first Chinese national sports meet was held in Nanjing as part of the country's effort to participate in and host the Olympics at an early date.

But then your plane descends into the stubborn brown cloud that frequently clings to Salt Lake City and its valley in the coldest months: a cloud composed of fog and pollution. By the time the plane touches down, the tourist-brochure-ready mountains are no longer visible. It is in many ways difficult to see clearly at this unusual moment in this unusual stretch of the United States. Sports normally thrive on suspense and surprises, but there is a different sort of uncertainty as the Winter Olympics open Friday.

Olympic Winter Events
The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games got off to a strong start during its opening weekend with perfect conditions, enthusiastic crowds, and fierce competition. Upsets have been the rule so far. Poland's favored Adam Malysz was knocked out of the top two spots in men's K90 ski jumping. American downhill skiing hopeful Daron Rahlves struggled to come in at a distant 16th place. And Germany's Anni Friesinger was upset by German teammate Claudia Pechstein, who took away the women's 3000-meter speed skating gold medal and set a new Olympic record. For the US team, snowboarder Kelly Clark brought home the gold in the women's halfpipe competition, Shannon Bahrke took sliver in women's freestyle moguls, and Derek Parra won the silver in the men's 5000-meter speed skating event. How much do you know about thess and other winter Olympic events? You may already be enjoying the excitement and drama of the international competition, but you are sure to enjoy it more with a greater understanding of each event. This week's online lesson takes you on a crash course . . . no, a gold medal tour of the events of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
