Speed Skating
Although archeologists in Scandinavia have relics that demonstrate primitive people glided over the ice using skates fashioned from animal bone and straps of leather, it was in the Netherlands that skating became a mode of transportation and national passion. Using the frozen canals for the track, speed skating became a winter past time and quickly gained in popularity across Europe. The first known skating competition is thought to have been a 15-meter race and took place in England on February 4, 1763.

Competition
Speed skating has been part of the Olympics since the first Winter Games in 1924. At first, only men raced, but in 1960, four women's speed skating events were held at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley. The women's 5000 meter event was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be currently raced in Salt Lake City: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m. Each race (for both men and women) has a slightly different rule for winning. The 2002 Speed Skating events will be held in the 6,000 seat Utah Olympic Oval which is the world's highest-altitude indoor skating oval

Some Key Dates in ISU History
The International Skating Union (ISU) was founded in 1892 and is the oldest governing international winter sport federation. During the last half of the nineteenth century, informal international competitions in both Speed Skating and Figure Skating were organized occasionally in different parts of the world. The first modern Speed Skating competition was held in Norway in 1863 and the first major International Speed Skating race was held in Hamburg (GER) in 1885. In 1882, the first International Figure Skating competition took place in Vienna (AUT). With the emergence of international competitions, in both Speed Skating and Figure Skating, as well as the forming of skating clubs and of national associations, the need to establish international standards to govern these sports became more and more apparent. In July 1892, the Dutch association took the lead in calling for a meeting of representatives of all countries interested in international ice skating competitions. As a result, the first Congress convened in Scheveningen (NED) and the ISU was created. The fifteen delegates present at the time, all from Europe, began to establish firm rules, laying down the foundations for international competitions in both disciplines. With the addition of Canada as a Member in 1894, the ISU expanded its horizons to become a truly international governing body. Since the foundation of the ISU the ice skating disciplines have developed steadily over time to occupy the significant role they now enjoy in the world of sport.

Gold medal winner Derek Parra of the USA crosses the line in a World and Olympic record time of 1:43.95 during the men's 1500m speed skating event. world records and many surprising story lines.
Jochem Uytdehaage (NED), a 25-year-old making his Olympic debut, won two gold medals (5000 meters, 10,000 meters) and a silver (1500 meters). Rival skater Derek Parra (USA), who was second to Uytdehaage at 5000 and defeated him in the 1500, hailed the Dutchman as "King of the Games."
If Uytdehaage was the king, then who was the queen? How about Germany's Claudia Pechstein, who won her third consecutive gold medal in the ladies' 5000 meters and added a gold in the ladies 3000. She now has seven Olympic medals in her career, including four gold.
Germany's Sabine Voelker added three medals silvers in the 1000 meters and 1500 meters and a bronze in the 500 meters.
Led by Pechstein, Voelker and ladies' 1500-meter champion Anni Friesinger who had top-6 finishes in three other events the German speed skating team won eight medals, including three gold. The USA had a team-record six skaters pick up a total of eight medals, including three gold. Skaters from The Netherlands also won eight medals, including three gold.

The first gold medal in short track at these Games seemed destined to go to Yang (A), who appeared poised to finally become the first gold-medalist in Chinese history at the Winter Olympics. medals at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games with seven, one more than Canada.
There were 24 medals awarded in the four nights of competition, with China, Korea and Canada each winning two gold medals. Australia and the United States of America each captured one gold. It was the highest number of medals ever awarded in short track at an Olympic Winter Games, because of the additions of 1500 m individual races for both men and women.
Canada won five men's medals, with the U.S. men second with three medals, including two by Apolo Anton Ohno. China (5) and Korea (4) combined to win nine of the 12 awarded medals in the women's competition.
Yang (A) and Marc Gagnon (CAN) each left the 2002 Olympic Winter Games with three medals overall.
