How I became a professional public speaker
My introduction to public speaking was as Best Man for my brother Nick some 15 years ago. I remember being quite frankly terrified when he asked me if I'd do it. Stand up and speak to an audience of two hundred people? Up to that point even telling a joke to a couple of blokes down the pub was a struggle. Fortunately Nick gave me six months notice. Not one to do things by halves, I enrolled with an international public speaking and leadership training organisation (International Training in Communication - ITC) and started to learn what is involved in putting together and delivering a speech.

Paul von Hindenburg was born in Posen in 1847. After being educated at the cadet schools at Wahlstatt and Berlin he fought at the Battle of Koniggratz (1866) and in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). Promoted to the rank of general in 1903, Hindenburg retired from the army in 1911.
On the outbreak of the First World War Hindenburg was recalled to the German Army and after being sent to the Eastern Front won decisive victories over the Russians at Tannenberg (1914) and the Masaurian Lakes (1915). Seen as the saviour of East Prussia, he was promoted to field marshal and on the 29th August 1916 became Chief of Staff of the German Army.
With the support of senior military officers and right-wing industrialists, Hindenburg and his quartermaster general, Erich von Ludendorff , formed what became known as the Third Supreme Command . This military-industrial dictatorship held power until 29th September 1918, when with defeat inevitable, the government of Germany was returned to the Reichstag.

Andrew Jackson Speaks: Indian Removal More History Critical Thinkers hooks Kerouac ...
Text of The Indian Removal Act, 1830
Passed into law during Jackson's second year as President, this Act set the tone for his administration's handling of all Indian affairs. In fact, Removal outlasted his tenure: the last of the Cherokee were infamously forced on the Trail of Tears death march in 1838, two years after Jackson's secondand finalterm ended. Though all Eastern tribes were eventually relocated West of the Mississippi, the government failed utterly in its pledge to enact the policy on a strictly voluntary basis (a policy notably not written into the act.) Nearly all relocation was carried out under duress, whether by military escort, or when no other option remained after tribal decimation by broken treaties, fraudulent land deals and the wars these often caused. Here is the Act's preamble:

CHAP. CXLVIII.An Act to provide for an exchange of lands with the Indians residing in any of the states or territories, and for their removal west of the river Mississippi.

Birth and Education
John Adams
Independence National Historical Park John Adams was born at Quincy, then part of the ancient town of Braintree, on the 19th day of October, old style, 1735. He was a descendant of the Puritans, his ancestors having early emigrated from England, and settled in Massachusetts. Discovering early a strong love of reading and of knowledge, proper care was taken by his father to provide for his education. His youthful studies were prosecuted in Braintree, under Mr. Marsh, a gentleman whose fortune it was to instruct several children, who in manhood were destined to act a conspicuous part in the scenes of the revolution.
He became a member of Harvard College, 1751, and was graduated in course in 1755: with what degree of reputation he left the university is not now precisely known; we only know that he was distinguished in a class of which the Dr. Hemmenway was a member, who bore honorable testimony to the openness and decision of his character, and to the strength and activity of his mind.
Having chosen the law for his profession, he commenced and prosecuted its studies under the direction of Samuel Putnam, a barrister of eminence at Worcester. By him he was introduced to the celebrated Jeremy Gridley, then attorney general of the province of Massachusetts Bay. At the first interview they became friends; Gridley at once proposed Mr. Adams for admission to the bar of Suffolk, and took him into special favor. Soon after his admission, Mr. Gridley led his young friend into a private chamber with an air of secrecy, and, pointing to a book case, said, "Sir, there is the secret of my eminence, and of which you may avail yourself as you please." It was a pretty good collection of treatises of the civil law. In this place Mr. Adams spent his days and nights, until he had made himself master of the principles of the code.

John Wilkes Booth was born in Bel Air, Maryland, on 10th May, 1838. He was the ninth of ten children born to the famous actor, Junius Brutus Booth
Booth made his acting debut at the age of seventeen in Baltimore. He toured throughout America and soon became one of America's leading actors and was especially acclaimed for the work he did with the Shakespearean company that was based in Richmond
Unlike the rest of his family, Booth was an ardent supporter of slavery . In 1859 he joined the Virginia militia company that assisted in the capture of John Brown at Harper's Ferry
Although Booth had a deep hatred for President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party , he did not join the Confederate Army on the outbreak of the American Civil War . Instead he worked as a secret agent and also helped to smuggle medical supplies from the North to the Confederate forces in the South. As a touring actor Booth had the perfect cover for this work.
In 1864 Booth devised a scheme to kidnap Abraham Lincoln in Washington . The plan was to take Lincoln to Richmond and hold him until he could be exchanged for Confederate Army prisoners of war. Others involved in the plot included

Supporting the study of the vital role of humor in social and cultural life through research and teaching. Interview with Robert Orben by Simon Sandall. Readersvoice.com aims to give people a few good reading tips. You might want to check out previous issues for some more interviews and reading suggestions.
For this issue I phoned humorist Robert Orben, who has written 47 books of humor, most recently the Speaker's Handbook of Humor (Merriam-Webster).
Robert Orben used to write the monologue for the Red Skelton Show, wrote gags for comedians like Dick Gregory, and flew around in Air Force One with President Gerald R. Ford when he was writing the U.S. president's speeches.
Robert Orben's mind is like a bubble gum machine that has churned out thousands of gags since his first book in 1946. So read on...
Robert Orben published his first gag book at the age of 18 in 1946, when he was working in a New York magic store.
Comedians would go to magic stores to buy props for their stand-up acts and they bought gag books there, too. Also professional magicians bought gag books to add humor to their acts.
When Robert Orben wrote his first gag book, Encyclopedia of Patter,it proved very popular, and he started publishing more books of gags, complete with sketches, ad libs, bits of business and routines. Titles included Patter Parade, Laugh Package, Sight Bits, and Screamline Comedy.
