Welcome to the PROMPT Institute
I would like to personally welcome you to our new PROMPT web-site. This site has been improved in many ways, from its content, to its navigation, to the pre-readings you will be able to download when you have enrolled in a workshop. The following information will introduce you to PROMPT, a unique and specialized non-profit program that offers: 1) Specialized treatment for all ages (infancy through geriatric), with speech production disorders. Currently we have clinics in Santa Fe and Espanola, New Mexico and will shortly be opening a clinic in Manhattan, New York. Our goal is to develop these specialized clinics across the country so that access to highly trained PROMPT clinicians for assessment, consultation and treatment is available. 2) Workshops for speech-language pathologists and parents/caregivers. I initially developed PROMPT, (an acronym for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets), in Canada during the 1970s and developed this approach further (from the 1980's -1995), as Director of the Speech Foundation, Toronto Children's Centre. Training Speech-Language Pathologists in the Prompt method began in the mid 1980's and when I moved back to the United States the Institute was organized and training continued here. Since that time, we have given over 400 workshops throughout the US and Canada, Australia, Europe and the Far East. Most workshops are arranged through sponsors who have asked us to present a workshop in their area.

The SpeechEasy is the smallest, most advanced, new device for the problem of stuttering. It is small enough to fit completely in your ear canal, yet it uses an advanced microprocessor that has all the power found in a computer. The SpeechEasy is digitally programmable with special computer software for a wide range of settings of Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) and Frequency Altered Feedback (FAF). SpeechEasy fluency devices are based on a natural phenomenon called the "choral effect." The "choral effect" occurs when people who stutter speak or sing in unison with others and their stuttering is dramatically reduced or even eliminated. SpeechEasy Stuttering Devices This one-year program for Intensive Stuttering Therapy for Adults and Teenagers begins with an intensive one-week in the clinic. A desk model of the Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) machine is used to train skills that replace stuttered speech with stutter-free speech. After speech behaviors can be produced in the clinic for short periods of time without using the DAF, the rest of the program is completed at home by assigning daily speaking tasks that start with easy situations and gradually move to harder ones and longer periods of speaking.

Speech language pathology is a health profession providing services to people whose lives have been disrupted by injury or illness. Speech therapists at Memorial work with patients who have difficulty with their speech, language, cognitive skills, other areas of communication, and/or feeding and swallowing. During sessions, treatment techniques are used to improve skills or address compensation strategies. At Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, the philosophy of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department is to provide the highest quality of care possible. In speech language pathology, diagnostic evaluations are completed on a one-to-one patient-therapist ratio. Individualized treatment plans are then developed based upon the person’s strengths and weaknesses. Whenever possible, treatment plans are carried out with personally relevant treatment materials. Every effort is made to coordinate services with other disciplines focusing on the importance of a well integrated interdepartmental approach. Group therapy is implemented when appropriate and beneficial to the patient. Services provided include:
  • Videofloroscopy Dysphagia feeding Cognitive retraining Phonological and linguistic therapy Comprehensive speech evaluation and goal setting Comprehensive swallowing evaluation, goal setting, and treatment

  • Evaluations Individual Therapy for: What is a speech and language evaluation?
A speech and language evaluation is the measurement of an individual's communication skills. Speech-language pathologists assess individual's speech and language skills to determine if a communication disorder is present, to identify communication strengths and weaknesses, to make decisions about treatment, and to establish a baseline with which to measure progress. Assessment information is used to make professional diagnoses and conclusions, identify the need for treatment, determine the focus of treatment, determine the frequency and length of treatment, and identify the need for referral to other professionals.
