Speech therapist to retire
Originally published on Friday, April 22
By Tom Fink
Progress Staff Writer
Jan Hogan doesn’t want anyone to make a speech when she retires. How ironic then, that because of Hogan, there are more people today who could make a speech on her behalf if they had to. Hogan, longtime speech and language therapist for Claremore schools, has decided to call this her last year working in education. “I’ve been here long enough now to start seeing children of students I had years ago,” Hogan said, laughing. “You know that it’s time to start thinking about retirement when you’ve been in education for that long.” Hogan, born Jan Lindsey, was originally from Hobart before her family moved to rural Porter (“Peach country,” she joked), where she graduated high school.

Speech Therapy Speech therapy is for people who have problems in pronunciation due to physical/dental problems. These people usually seek counseling form a speech therapist. A speech therapist is a specialist with training in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of speech, voice, and language disorders who works with people, unable to make speech sounds or cannot make them clearly. They also work with people who stutter, have fluency and rhythm problems, inappropriate pitch, or harsh voice and speech quality problems. The most widespread and obvious speech disorder is stuttering, often caused by anxiety. The speech therapist sets up a program of speech exercises to reduce the disability, and if necessary, enlists the aid of a psychologist or psychiatrist. Other disorders may result from hearing loss, stroke, cerebral palsy, mental disability, or brain injury. Speech therapists keep careful records on the evaluation and progress of patients, often developing and implementing individualized treatment programs based on the input of physicians, psychiatric social workers, and psychologists. In fact, because speech disorders are usually related to neurological, psychological, and physical conditions, speech therapists must be able to work as a member of a team which may include other healthcare specialists such as a neurologist and psychiatrist.

Stuttering is a serious, debilitating communication disorder. It remains one of the most misunderstood disorders in the world. People who stutter:
  • are as intelligent as other people are as mentally stable as others. are of all shapes and sizes. are as interesting as people who do not stutter. were born with the predisposition to do so.
Theories about the origin of stuttering abound and have been documented since Egyptian times. However, most recently, scientists have found convincing evidence that stuttering stems from genetic, neurophysiological differences in the brain.

Evidence-based approach to speech therapy introduced for stroke patients
By Gila Z. Reckess
Speech problems such as the inability to formulate coherent sentences or to understand verbal statements are collectively known as aphasia. There are multiple types of aphasia: including problems with reading, writing, speaking or understanding speech. But there is no standard protocol to determine which type of treatment is best for which type of patient. Speech therapists generally rely on their own experience and intuition to determine a patient's treatment regimen. "What's different about our program is that we recommend using only cutting-edge treatments that have scientific evidence behind them," says Robert P. Fucetola, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurology. "We're also quantifying and evaluating them on an ongoing basis to continually improve our understanding of whether a particular intervention makes a difference for our patients."

My first grader brought home a note from school requesting that he participate in the speech therapy program.

Pediatrics Question and Answer by Dr. Shari Nethersole
Please Read Our
Q. My first grader brought home a note from school requesting that he participate in the speech therapy program, as he has a slight problem with making L and R sounds. I know he sometimes mispronounces certain words beginning with these sounds, but he can also pronounce many words beginning with these sounds accurately. I thought that with maturity, this would improve. Does this sound like a problem that requires enrollment in a speech therapy program? At what age do children master speech sounds? I should also note that he is the oldest child in our family and he was a late talker. He has been read to consistently since he was three months old. A. Children should have speech that is quite clear by the time they are in first grade. There are certainly some children who will have problems with articulating certain letters and certain sounds, and some of this may be hereditary. While it is true that the problem may get better with maturity, I do not see any harm in initiating speech therapy in order to improve the speech more quickly. For some children the speech does not improve much without specific therapy. You do want to be careful that your child is not "labeled" and that he is not made to feel bad because of his speech impediment. You want to do whatever you can to bolster his self esteem and let him see that this is just a minor problem that he is getting a little help with. Your child may even feel better once his speech starts to improve because he will be able to communicate more effectively with other children and adults, and not have to repeat or rephrase questions so that people can understand him.
