    • A master’s degree in speech-language pathology is the standard credential.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Speech-language pathologists, sometimes called speech therapists , assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders. Volunteer stories > Being a speech therapist
Heather Robinson talks about her time spent with her husband and child in Uganda, where she volunteered with VSO as a speech therapist.
In 2001, my husband and I travelled out to Uganda and I began my job as a Speech and Language therapist. I was a little nervous, as I was the only Speech and Language Therapist in Uganda, so I felt a great deal of pressure to be able to contribute to the country as effectively as possible. My primary job was teaching and training, with some clerical work as well. However, I was also involved in setting up a Speech and Language Therapy course; the first of its kind in Uganda. I was responsible for more strategic planning than I had been prior to VSO and so this new responsibility was something that I enjoyed immensely and I knew that I would be able to take a lot away from my time as a VSO volunteer. Initially, this new start was a little daunting. I found myself working with limited resources, for instance, and at first I wished that I had the same equipment that I was used to working with in the UK. However, instead of being a hindrance, this actually turned out to be for the best. I realised that if I had had access to this equipment, my clients would not have known what to do with it. High-tech machines that flash and beep are things that they would not have seen before in the area. I began to acknowledge that it was actually far more relevant to go to the local shops, markets and tradesmen and buy items that the clients were used to.
