It's sports vs. human interest stories during NBC's Olympics
(Los Angeles Times) Serious Olympics viewers don't just watch the Olympics, they train for them. I myself have been in training for four years. I'm ready for the thrill of overeating and the agony of the commercials, starting with Friday night's opening ceremonies (7:30 p.m. to midnight). Without meaning to seem boastful, the secret of how I, a professional couch potato, will be able to go the 167.5 hours on NBC (not counting the 172 more on MSNBC and CNBC) is by using the aerobic method of sitting and watching.

The Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta came to a close Sunday night, after two weeks of athletic competition between 197 countries and over 11,000 athletes the most ever in an Olympic Games. The Games closed with International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch praising the city of Atlanta, but notably failing to call the game as "the greatest in Olympic history" a phrase that has become routine in his Closing Ceremonies speeches.

India will bid for 2016 Olympics
Story Tools NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) India will bid to host the 2016 Olympics, the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) announced on Monday. With New Delhi having been chosen in November to stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the IOA decided at its annual meeting on Sunday that it would apply to hold the Summer Games for the first time. New Delhi has hosted the Asian Games twice, the inaugural edition in 1951 and again in 1982. Despite a population of more than one billion, India managed just one Olympic medal at Sydney in 2000 a bronze by woman weightlifter Karnam Malleswari. The country failed to win any medal in 1992, 1988 and 1984. Their last gold dates back to the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the men's hockey title. Athens and Beijing will host the next Summer Olympics in 2004 and 2008. The 2012 hosts will be decided next year.

Olympics tech chief wants perfect 10
'A date that doesn't slip, a system that must work'
From... By Julia King (IDG) Thousands of sportscasters, international racing officials and others at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games will tap into a one-of-a-kind, never-before-production-tested computer system that has taken a consortium of 16 technology providers more than three years to develop and deploy. And it had better work, and work right the first time. If it doesn't, New York-based lead integrator SchlumbergerSema and its partners including Sun Microsystems, Gateway, Xerox and Samsung Electronics will be racing hard to beat back a world-class public relations nightmare not unlike the one IBM faced at the 1996 Atlanta Games. That summer in Atlanta, flaws in IBM's much-vaunted Olympic Information Network led to inaccuracies and delays in reporting real-time race results around the globe.

Olympics ethics report shows top level 'pattern of deception'
February 8, 1999
Web posted at: 9:21 p.m. EST (0221 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) The Independent Ethics Committee report due Tuesday on the Salt Lake City Olympic scandal details "a pattern of deception" involving the two top organizing committee officials, CNN has learned. Sources close to the investigation identified the two officials to be singled out as former Salt Lake Organization Committee (SLOC) President Tom Welch and former SLOC Vice President Dave Johnson. An official with the committee told CNN the report, to be made public Tuesday, runs some 250 pages "longer and more detailed than anyone expected." The official called the report a "huge document" that details "a pattern of deception" involving Welch and Johnson. Welch resigned from the committee in 1997 after pleading no contest to a charge of spousal abuse. Johnson was asked to resign early last month after it was alleged that scholarships, cash and lavish gifts had been given to members of the International Olympic Committee and their families before Salt Lake City was named host of the 2002 Winter Games.

Web posted at: 3:47 a.m. EST (0847 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) Four groups of investigators on two continents are continuing to examine bribery allegations following the resignations on Friday of the president and vice president of the Salt Lake Olympic organizing committee. Two other Salt Lake senior executives were placed on paid leave over allegations that bribes helped land the 2002 Winter Games. The resignations of Frank Joklik , president and CEO of the Olympic committee, and David Johnson, vice president, came amid disclosures that civic boosters gave money at least $70,000 in one case to members of the International Olympic Committee to further their efforts to secure the games. Johnson Joklik and Johnson helped Salt Lake land the games, although Joklik has said he knew nothing of bribes during his tenure.
