Southeast Area Volunteer Calendar of Events Donations ... Links Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental retardation. Special Olympics began in 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver organized the First International Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois, USA. The concept was born in the early 1960s when Mrs. Shriver started a day camp for people with mental retardation. She saw that people with mental retardation were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought. Since 1968, millions of children and adults with mental retardation have participated in Special Olympics. w ere the ancient games better than ours? More fair and square? More about sports and less about money? Are modern games more sexist? More political? Have we strayed from the ancient Olympic ideal? During this Olympic season, you may hear from announcers, critics, commentators and even athletes that the Olympic games are too commercial, too political, too "professional." Or that the judging is too nationalistic.

Ground Zero star-spangled banner to wave over Olympics
A U.S. flag that survived the September World Trade Center attack was raised during pregame ceremonies at Super Bowl XXXVI. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) An honor guard made up of athletes, firefighters and police officers will present a torn American flag, which had been discovered in the ruins at Ground Zero, during the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics on Friday. The decision to raise the Ground Zero flag to the tune of the U.S. National Anthem reached by the U.S. and International Olympic Committees and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee was announced at a news conference Wednesday. The flag will fly in the Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium for the duration of the Games.

Japan Olympics bid details reported
RELATED STORIES, SITES February 3, 1999 Web posted at: 5:33 a.m. EST (1033 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) Former Salt Lake City Winter Olympics bid committee chairman Tom Welch broke his silence Wednesday revealing that he felt like "a man who's being tarred, feathered and hung." In his first interview since the Olympics bribery scandal broke, Welch told CNN he had "made a lot of mistakes along the way," but was only ever trying to help Utah become a member of the "Olympic family." Welch has been accused of "buying" the Olympics by giving lavish gifts and direct cash payments to members of the International Olympic Committee and providing college scholarships to the families of some representatives of the IOC.
