Runner earns bronze medal on world stage Special Olympics athlete cherishes trip to Ireland NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER To the shopping crowds at Camino Real Marketplace, Daniel Winslow is a familiar sight as he races around the parking lot rounding up shopping carts and picking up trash. The 27-year-old groundskeeper drew a bigger crowd in Ireland last month when he raced his way to a bronze medal in the half-marathon at the Special Olympics World Games. Even before that he was in the spotlight. In front of a crowd of 75,000 people from around the world, he ran with the torch into the Dublin stadium to signal the start of the games. Mr. Winslow was honored this week when Santa Barbara city officials issued a proclamation declaring Santa Barbara Special Olympics World Games Week. Now back on the job, the athlete had time to talk about the competition, which drew 7,000 athletes from around the world. "I expected to be first, but I finally achieved one of my biggest dreams," he said. He ran the 13.5-mile route "past planes and cows and horses and sheep" in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 44 seconds. The gold medalist pulled in about 18 minutes ahead of him. The race was on the last day of the games, June 28, which was thankfully cool, he said. His parents and sister were on hand to cheer him on to the finish.

Special Olympics Manitoba is in need of volunteers to help with bingo! Bingos take place at either Club Regent or McPhillips Street Station Casino in Winnipeg. Interested volunteers can sign up for bingos depending on their availability. Volunteering for even two bingos each year is a big help! The search is also on for a bingo coordinator. This individual would recruit and organize volunteers for bingo each quarter. There are approximately 4-5 bingos in each 3 month period.

Our Goal To bring all persons who are mentally challenged into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected and given a chance to become useful and productive citizens.
Our Philosophy Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with mental retardation can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.

Each day is a celebration for our Special Olympics' athletes in Arkansas. We learn something each day from their courage and determination. On this site, you'll find information, schedules and pictures and other events that are a part of Special Olympics Arkansas. We owe a debt of gratitude to the countless hours our Volunteers, Coaches and Area Directors spend in coordinating area and local competitions and fund-raisers to support their local competitions. Thank you to our Board of Directors and the athletes families for your undying love for the Special Olympics movement. Most importantly, I want to thank our donors and supporters for your financial support of Special Olympics Arkansas. Because of your financial support, we are able to offer all training, equipment, special need services and competitions to our athletes FREE OF CHARGE. Not many Organizations can make that claim. Without it, our financial resources for our athletes,  programs and competitions would be jeopardized. On behalf of the athletes and staff, we thank you for your support. Possibly because I am immediately following this post by going away for nearly a week, but more likely because I've grown an unnatural dependence on the feelings of low expectations that follow from declaring I will be doing exactly nothing for an undisclosed period of time, even if it is an outright lie, as it was last time. As such, I am taking this opportunity to declare myself not only on permanent sabbatical, but on a partial hiatus with generously distributed pockets of disability leave.
