Special Olympics Iowa (SOIA) is a statewide non-profit organization that utilizes sports training and competition to provide people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in a larger society where they are accepted, respected and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens. Special Olympics Iowa has served Iowans with intellectual disabilities for over 35 years. With the founding of Special Olympics in 1968, the first competition in Iowa had fewer than 100 participating athletes. The growth of the program has been dramatic. In 2004 Special Olympics Iowa provided training and competitions in 22 sports for over 12,500 athletes representing each of Iowa’s 99 counties.

Tony Wade was one of six athletes selected from over 100 Special Olympics basketball players across the United States to take part in the Sept. 13 NBA/ Special Olympics Basketball Clinic in Orlando, FL. He was partnered with NBA player, and former Wake Forest star, Chris Paul to instruct Special Olympics Florida athletes ages 11-15 living in and around Orlando.
