Utah Olympic booster denies pressuring potential donors
February 2, 1999
Web posted at: 1:05 p.m. EST (1805 GMT) In this story:
(CNN) Sex, drugs and guns all figure in the latest Olympic developments, some of them linked to the bribery scandal tied to Salt Lake City's winning bid for the 2002 Winter Games. Big money, of course, figures in, too. The former head of a Utah-based mining company denies using unethical tactics when he told subordinates to turn down business from suppliers who refused his request for Olympic donations. The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Frank Joklik, an Olympics booster and former president and chief executive officer of Kennecott Corporation, pressured his copper-mining company's suppliers to donate money for Salt Lake City's bid for the 1998 Winter Games. Joklik Joklik, who later would lead the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) for the 2002 Winter Games, got 12 of Kennecott's suppliers to contribute to the unsuccessful bid, the newspaper reported.

Istanbul's bid crosses continents
Story Tools RELATED Nine cities in 2012 Olympic race Istanbul bid crosses continents Leipzig plans city-center Games London's 'compact' bid unveiled ... Paris draws on savoir-faire ISTANBUL, Turkey (Reuters) Istanbul styled itself as a "bridge between civilizations" when it presented its bid to stage the 2012 Summer Olympics on Friday. Yalcin Aksoy, the head of the Turkish city's bidding committee, told Reuters that as Istanbul spanned two continents not only geographically but socially, culturally and religiously it was well placed to fulfil Olympic ideals. "We believe only Istanbul gives a chance for the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to choose a location which will challenge that conflict and create an awareness of a bridge between civilizations, cultures and religions," he said. Istanbul, which has a population of 10 million, said it would host all events and house all athletes in one village between two main clusters of venues on Istanbul's European shores. "We have a good project, a very compact one and we'll be able to display all 28 sports in one city and in one village for the athletes," Aksoy said.

January 14, 1999
Web posted at: 6:27 p.m. EST (2327 GMT) In this story:

(CNN) Justice Department officials Thursday told CNN that federal prosecutors have arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah , to collect information and subpoena documents in preparation to interview witnesses in the case. Sources said the prosecutors are from the fraud section of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. They are consulting with investigators from the FBI's Salt Lake City field office and with individuals involved in the internal Olympic organization's investigation. It has been alleged that Salt Lake City Bid Committee members offered lavish gifts, cash, scholarships and even plastic surgery to International Olympic Committee members in hopes of winning the 2002 Winter Games.

Winter Olympics video game offers icy realism
The Cutting Edge
By Denise Hamilton Sports and gaming fans can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat as they navigate through a video game that re-creates the Japanese ski slopes, bobsled runs and slalom jumps to be traversed by athletes competing in the upcoming Olympics. Nagano Winter Olympics '98, just released, was designed and manufactured by Konami Co. in Japan, a leading developer of electronic entertainment. "They've got the layout of the mountain, the architectural drawings ... Everything is exact to what's going to happen in the real Olympics," said Randy Severin, senior products manager for Konami of America Inc., the U.S. subsidiary based outside Chicago. Severin says two teams of up to 40 designers spent a year developing the game in Japan, working with Olympics officials who have licensed it as the official video game of the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. "You'll see a snowboarding game out there and some skiing games, but nothing that has 12 or 13 events that are all unique," he says.

Welch denies CNN report

Salt Lake committee reorganization
RELATED STORIES, SITES February 5, 1999 Web posted at: 3:20 p.m. EST (2020 GMT) (CNN) Investigators reportedly are examining evidence that Salt Lake City Olympic organizers used airline tickets to disguise illicit payments to several members of the International Olympic Committee, whose support was critical to Salt Lake City's bid for the 2002 Winter Games. The Washington Post said Friday that the tickets, bought at premium prices by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC), in some instances were cashed in or traded for less-expensive fares. FBI and Olympic ethics investigators are examining whether there was an understanding between some IOC members and Salt Lake organizers that the tickets would serve as a form of payoff in return for supporting the city's bid, the Post reported.

Leipzig plans city-center Games
Story Tools RELATED Nine cities in 2012 Olympic race Istanbul bid crosses continents Leipzig plans city-center Games London's 'compact' bid unveiled ... Paris draws on savoir-faire LEIPZIG, Germany (Reuters) Leipzig unveiled plans to stage the Olympics closely around the city center if its scandal-hit bid to host the 2012 Games succeeds. The east German city, which faces a tough fight from rival bids London, Paris and New York, is a clear outsider to stage the showpiece event. The campaign has already been hit by the expulsion of several top officials amid allegations over links with the former East German Stasi secret police and financial irregularities. The German government, however, has backed the bid in the hope of giving the country's deprived former communist east a much-needed lift. Bid chief Peter Zuehlsdorff said on Friday over 90 percent of the events would be held within a 10 kilometer radius of the city center with heavy security planned including 20,000 police officers and 5,000 other security personnel. Organizers submitted a budget of 1.85 billion euros ($2.35 billion) to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for temporary facilities and for running the Games.

Web posted at: 1:25 a.m. EST (0625 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) A senior member of the United States Olympic Committee has resigned over snowballing allegations that bribes helped secure the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, CNN learned Thursday night. Alfredo La Mont, senior director of international relations and protocol, stepped down after informing the USOC of a "previously undisclosed business relationship" with a former member of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee under investigation. He was the first USOC official to fall victim to the scandal. The news came after a whirlwind day, with federal investigators subpoenaing bank records in Salt Lake City while Olympic officals pledged the 2002 Winter Games would stay in the bustling Utah city.

Online Olympics Web sites
By CNN Interactive Producer Steve Baxter (CNN) Whether you want information on Bobsledding or the Biathlon, to keep up with what's happening in Nagano for the '98 Winter Olympics, there's no better place to go than the World Wide Web. It's not exactly front-row tickets or even television coverage, but you can get a depth of detailed background information and up-to-the-minute results that can be found no where else. The official Winter Olympics site is sponsored by the Nagano Olympic Organizing Committee and just like the summer Olympics in Atlanta, this site is powered by the computing muscle of IBM. A daily news section presents the day's top stories in an easy-to-read newspaper format. Visitors can take a virtual tour of each Olympic venue using a VRML plugin that lets you explore the inside and outside of each event site, rendered in 3-D. A dramatic Shockwave movie using satellite images takes visitors on an aerial tour of the region. Detailed information about the Nagano Prefecture and the rugged Japan Alps, known as "the roof of Japan," are also included. If you want to know more about who is participating in the games, the site breaks down the competitors geographically, giving information about each country and their individual team members. You can also search for athletes by their names and the events they are participating in. Each Olympic sport is featured, with schedules, technical details and the rules and regulations for the competition.
