NBC's Olympics ratings take a dive
In this story: Counting on more viewers Live coverage suffers, too RELATED STORIES, SITES From Jodi Ross CNN Correspondent NEW YORK (CNN) American athletes are raking in the Olympic medals again, but NBC's ratings aren't quite so golden. Viewership figures for the first three nights of NBC's TV coverage are 32 percent lower than the first three days of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games.

This truly was a dream for me. I consider my trip to Atlanta for the 1996 Olympics one of the greatest experiences of my life. I went from the jubilation of witnessing history to the horror of realizing I left a half-hour before the bomb went off right where I was standing. I took many photos on my trip, the best of which can be viewed in a 34-picture slideshow at: View Slideshow of 1996 Olympics I went back to Centennial Park recently and took 11 follow-up shots of how the park now looks. Two other Salt Lake senior executives were placed on paid leave over allegations that bribes helped land the 2002 Winter Games. The resignations of Frank Joklik , president and CEO of the Olympic committee, and David Johnson, vice president, came amid disclosures that civic boosters gave money at least $70,000 in one case to members of the International Olympic Committee to further their efforts to secure the games. Johnson Joklik and Johnson helped Salt Lake land the games, although Joklik has said he knew nothing of bribes during his tenure.

    Online Olympics Web sites
By CNN Interactive Producer Steve Baxter (CNN) Whether you want information on Bobsledding or the Biathlon, to keep up with what's happening in Nagano for the '98 Winter Olympics, there's no better place to go than the World Wide Web. It's not exactly front-row tickets or even television coverage, but you can get a depth of detailed background information and up-to-the-minute results that can be found no where else. The official Winter Olympics site is sponsored by the Nagano Olympic Organizing Committee and just like the summer Olympics in Atlanta, this site is powered by the computing muscle of IBM. A daily news section presents the day's top stories in an easy-to-read newspaper format. Visitors can take a virtual tour of each Olympic venue using a VRML plugin that lets you explore the inside and outside of each event site, rendered in 3-D. A dramatic Shockwave movie using satellite images takes visitors on an aerial tour of the region. Detailed information about the Nagano Prefecture and the rugged Japan Alps, known as "the roof of Japan," are also included. If you want to know more about who is participating in the games, the site breaks down the competitors geographically, giving information about each country and their individual team members. You can also search for athletes by their names and the events they are participating in. Each Olympic sport is featured, with schedules, technical details and the rules and regulations for the competition.

Payne spokesman Lee Echols confirmed the contents of the memo which included the proposal that Libyan IOC member Bashir Mohamed Attarabulsi receive free medical treatment at Emory University but said the suggestions in the note were merely "ideas." "Billy's a creative, ideas-oriented person," said Echols, who said Payne told him, "None of the ideas were ever seriously discussed. No one took the musings as anything but that musings. SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) The president and vice president of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics resigned Friday in response to a burgeoning bribery scandal. Frank Joklik, president of the city's Olympic organizing committee, resigned but will stay on until a successor is named. He asked for and received the resignation of senior vice president Dave Johnson. Both officials were involved in Salt Lake's successful bid to host the Games. That effort has become the target of four investigations into hundreds of thousands of dollars that went into scholarships and gifts for International Olympic Committee members and their relatives.

    Rogge impressed by Athens progress
Story Tools ATHENS, Greece International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge hailed Greek preparations for this summer's Athens Games, but said security remained a priority for organizers. "The first years after Athens took the Games the progress of preparations were disappointingly slow," Rogge told Greece's Ethnos newspaper. "In recent years though the progress achieved by Athens organizers and the government is impressive." Rogge, who was chief overseer of the Games before taking over the IOC in 2001, said he would continue to worry until the opening ceremony. "The hosting of the Games is a great responsibility and it is not something that can be taken lightly," he said. "Security remains the number one priority." Greece has budgeted $750 million on security the biggest amount in Olympic history and plans to deploy a 50,000 security force during the Games from August 13-29.

The Olympics: A very political game
Human rights groups say giving Beijing the Games would reward political repression and other abuses By Joe Havely CNN (CNN) Ask any member of the International Olympic Committee worth their salt and they’ll tell you that politics and sport do not mix. Ask a member of the Beijing 2008 bid committee and they’ll probably say the same thing. Of course, a lot depends on what people class as politics. On the sensitive subject of human rights around which most opposition to Beijing’s bid has centered the Chinese leadership argues the issue is simply not a political one. Instead they say it is a difference of culture, dressed up as a political stick used to engage in a bout of China-bashing.
