In his first interview since the Olympics bribery scandal broke, Welch told CNN he had "made a lot of mistakes along the way," but was only ever trying to help Utah become a member of the "Olympic family." Welch has been accused of "buying" the Olympics by giving lavish gifts and direct cash payments to members of the International Olympic Committee and providing college scholarships to the families of some representatives of the IOC.

CBS pits 'Survivor' reruns against Olympics
(Los Angeles Times) Reruns are the most maligned institution in television, the lowest of the low in the creative food chain, and rightly so. Especially with the great rediscovery this summer that people will actually watch something new called original programming. We've had to put up with not only repeats but threepeats and fourpeats. Even a classy show like "Everybody Loves Raymond" this summer has been breaking new ground by rerunning the same rerun the one about can openers two weeks apart. I didn't love it that much.

Sunday night, Juan Antonio Samaranch, International Olympic Committee president, called the Atlanta Olympics "most exceptional," invoked the memory of the 11 Israeli athletes killed in the Munich Olympics in 1972 and asked for a moment of silence for those injured and the one person killed in the bombing of the Centennial Olympic Plaza last Saturday. Then, the more than 80,000 in Olympic Stadium celebrated 16 days of athletic competition. The closing ceremonies ended in music, lights and a conga line of athletes snaking around the stadium floor. Top Salt Lake Olympics officials resign in bribery scandal
    Joklik
    January 8, 1999
Web posted at: 3:51 p.m. EST (2051 GMT) In this story: SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) The president and vice president of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics resigned Friday in response to a burgeoning bribery scandal. Frank Joklik (996K/35 sec. AIFF or WAV ). will stay on as president until a successor is named. He asked for and received the resignation of senior vice president Dave Johnson. "The acts during the Olympic bidding process that besmirch our reputation break my heart," Joklik said, in announcing his resignation. Both officials were involved in Salt Lake's successful bid to host the Games. That effort has become the target of four investigations into hundreds of thousands of dollars that went into scholarships and gifts for International Olympic Committee members and their relatives.

NATO on 'high alert' for Olympics
Story Tools ATHENS, Greece (Reuters) NATO will be on high alert during the Athens Olympics, but only Greek troops will be deployed in the country, organizers said on Monday. U.S and Greek troops also plan to stage joint exercises in Greece from March as part of security preparations for the Games in August. "NATO will be ready to intervene if a crisis erupts. NATO and NATO members will be on a high state of alert," said Greek Defense Minister Yannos Papandoniou. The government has repeatedly had to allay fears among Greeks, sensitive to outside interference in domestic issues, that foreign security forces would be allowed to operate in the country during the Games. The U.S.-Greek exercises are designed to help security forces tackle potential threats during the Games, including nuclear and chemical attacks, as organizers put final touches on the biggest security blueprint the Olympics have ever seen, Public Order Minister George Floridis said. "In March there will be a common exercise of U.S. and Greek troops. This exercise is being designed and details will be announced at a later stage," he told reporters.

Scientists monitor Utah mountains for quake during Olympics
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) As millions of people are watching skiers, snowboarders and bobsledders race down the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah, this month, scientists will be constantly watching those mountains for signs of earthquakes. Although the potential for a large quake to shake the 2002 Winter Games is small, if it happens, it could have a devastating effect on the highly populated area. Emergency officials will get fast information about any sudden Earth movements in the Wasatch fault from University of Utah seismologists who will be manning a new monitoring system of sensors, computers and telecommunications. University officials said the key feature of the system is the ShakeMap a rapidly generated computer map. Within five minutes of an earthquake, the map will give an overview of the location, severity and extent of ground shakes. The data will be similar to the Doppler radar image of a weather disturbance.

Winter Olympics video game offers icy realism
    The Cutting Edge
By Denise Hamilton Sports and gaming fans can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat as they navigate through a video game that re-creates the Japanese ski slopes, bobsled runs and slalom jumps to be traversed by athletes competing in the upcoming Olympics. Nagano Winter Olympics '98, just released, was designed and manufactured by Konami Co. in Japan, a leading developer of electronic entertainment. "They've got the layout of the mountain, the architectural drawings ... Everything is exact to what's going to happen in the real Olympics," said Randy Severin, senior products manager for Konami of America Inc., the U.S. subsidiary based outside Chicago. Severin says two teams of up to 40 designers spent a year developing the game in Japan, working with Olympics officials who have licensed it as the official video game of the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. "You'll see a snowboarding game out there and some skiing games, but nothing that has 12 or 13 events that are all unique," he says.
