The Sydney Olympics are to go out with a bang - a low-flying fighter bomber is to ignite a massive plume of flame and one million people will be treated to one of the world's most spectacular firework displays. Runner earns bronze medal on world stage Special Olympics athlete cherishes trip to Ireland NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER To the shopping crowds at Camino Real Marketplace, Daniel Winslow is a familiar sight as he races around the parking lot rounding up shopping carts and picking up trash. The 27-year-old groundskeeper drew a bigger crowd in Ireland last month when he raced his way to a bronze medal in the half-marathon at the Special Olympics World Games. Even before that he was in the spotlight. In front of a crowd of 75,000 people from around the world, he ran with the torch into the Dublin stadium to signal the start of the games. Mr. Winslow was honored this week when Santa Barbara city officials issued a proclamation declaring Santa Barbara Special Olympics World Games Week. Now back on the job, the athlete had time to talk about the competition, which drew 7,000 athletes from around the world. "I expected to be first, but I finally achieved one of my biggest dreams," he said. He ran the 13.5-mile route "past planes and cows and horses and sheep" in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 44 seconds. The gold medalist pulled in about 18 minutes ahead of him. The race was on the last day of the games, June 28, which was thankfully cool, he said. His parents and sister were on hand to cheer him on to the finish.

This article is not about those people. Here we will explore the much larger and eviler business of getting them to want the sandwich in the first place. The next stepphysically vending a carefully formulated chemical stew that resembles a sandwichwas already explored extensively in Super Size Me , Morgan Spurlock's famous long-form Jackass stunt, which shocked the eight people who have never eaten at McDonald's with the blockbuster revelation that the food there is bad. As great a film as this is, it glosses over the fact that the McDonald's story is one of relentless and hilarious marketing across many media (but especially TV). Billions of dollars paid over the years to writers, set designers, composers, singers, actors, camera operators, video editors, and finally TV stations, have ensured that no one born after the 19th century can go through a day oblivious to McDonald's existence. Unless they don't have a TV, and hey, let's be realistic. You honestly think there's $5 worth of ingredients in that value meal? Hell, naw. So enjoy the following adsyou paid for 'em.

w ere the ancient games better than ours? More fair and square? More about sports and less about money? Are modern games more sexist? More political? Have we strayed from the ancient Olympic ideal? During this Olympic season, you may hear from announcers, critics, commentators and even athletes that the Olympic games are too commercial, too political, too "professional." Or that the judging is too nationalistic.
