Special Needs of Adult Students
An adult is usually an ideal student. There's no need to prod an adult: he's studying because he wants to. He views piano study as something special he's doing for himself, so he'll maximize his progress by following your instructions precisely and practicing diligently. There are several special considerations in teaching adult students, and attention to their particular needs will make your teaching even more successful.
Attitudes
Any student responds positively to a non-punitive studio ambiance. If a student knows he won't be penalized or ridiculed for mistakes, questions, or unsuccessful outcomes, he won't be afraid to try. Help your adult student see music as a stress-reliever rather than a stress-inducer. The goals are pleasure and creating beauty. Mistakes are gone instantaneously. I find that most adult students bring a fierce intensity to their lessons and home practice sessions. Music is very important, yet time is limited, so often adults press themselves toward unrealistic goals and/or are too hard on themselves for errors. As children, we are positive that grown-ups know everything and do everything right on the very first try. Now that we're adults, we know how woefully short of this ideal we fall, yet we still think we ought to be able to attain it. This unrealistic and unreasonable burden is a common source of frustration, disappointment, and, sometimes, anger for an adult student.

Significant Points
  • Excellent job prospects are expected due to rising enrollments of special education students and reported shortages of qualified teachers.
  • A bachelor’s degree, completion of an approved teacher preparation program, and a license are required to qualify; many States require a master’s degree.
  • Many States offer alternative licensure programs to attract people into these jobs.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Special education teachers work with children and youths who have a variety of disabilities. A small number of special education teachers work with students with mental retardation or autism, primarily teaching them life skills and basic literacy. However, the majority of special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using the general education curriculum, or modifying it, to meet the child’s individual needs. Most special education teachers instruct students at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level, although some teachers work with infants and toddlers. The various types of disabilities that qualify individuals for special education programs include specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments, autism, combined deafness and blindness, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments. Students are classified under one of the categories, and special education teachers are prepared to work with specific groups. Early identification of a child with special needs is an important part of a special education teacher’s job. Early intervention is essential in educating children with disabilities.

Career and Job Highlights for Special Education Teachers
  • Reported shortages of qualified teachers coupled with increasing enrollments of special education students will likely create favorable job opportunities.
  • To qualify applicants must obtain a license, complete an approved teacher preparation program, and receive a bachelor’s and in some States a master’s degree.
  • In order to draw people into these positions, a number of States offer alternative licensure programs.
Special Education Teaching Career Overview
Children and youths with a variety of disabilities are taught by special education teachers. A small percentage of special education teachers instruct basic literacy and life skills to students with mental retardation or autism. However, most students in special education have mild to moderate disabilities and teachers modify the general education curriculum to meet the individual needs or their students. Although some teachers work with pre-school-aged children such as infants and toddlers, the majority of special education teachers work with students at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level.
Examples of disabilities that qualify students for special education programs are traumatic brain injury, combined deafness and blindness, autism, visual impairments, orthopedic impairments, multiple disabilities, hearing impairments, emotional disturbance, mental retardation, speech or language impairments, specific learning disabilities, and other health impairments. Students entering a special education program are sorted into the categories to help special education teachers prepare to work with specific groups of learners. It is important for special education teachers to identify a child’s special needs as early as possible to help increase their success in school.

Through its involvement in Special Needs North, Teaching Exhibitions , in partnership with NASEN , will provide added value to exhibitors and visitors, making the show even more successful for exhibitors and special needs educators.
“The PA is proud of what has been achieved in partnership with NASEN to build Special Needs North since its inception in 1992. SNN is now an essential event in the exhibitions calendar and we want to register our gratitude to Ruth Stuart Moore our exhibitions manager for all her efforts in building this event into what it is today. Following our strategic decision to withdraw from running educational exhibitions, the PA is pleased to have concluded an agreement with TSL Education for SNN to become a part of their programme after this year’s show. We know the show will be in safe hands and feel sure it will go from strength to strength.” Graham Taylor, Director, The Publishers Association.
“NASEN is very pleased to further the partnership they have developed with Teaching Exhibitions in the organisation of Special Needs North from 2006. Special Needs North has been an excellent, well-attended event, supported by many practitioners over many years, and we look forward to being able to continue to provide quality CPD to the exhibition in future years. NASEN would like to take this opportunity to thank the Publishers Association for the very professional and valuable support that they have given both NASEN and this event over many years and we look forward to working with them in the future.” Lorraine Petersen, Chief Executive Officer, NASEN.

Welcome to my site – I hope you find it helpful. If this is your first visit, click here for a guide to the site. This site is named after the book Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice-Exceptional Student , edited by Kiesa Kay. Twice-exceptional children (that is, intellectually gifted children with special needs such as AD/HD, learning disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, etc.) have a hard time of it in our education system - because their giftedness can mask their special needs and their special needs hide their giftedness, they are often labeled as "lazy", "unmotivated", "not trying". Many people don't even realize that a child can be both gifted and learning disabled; however, Linda Silverman, Ph.D., the director of the Gifted Development Center has found that fully 1/6 of the gifted children tested at the GDC have a learning difference of some type In addition to being special needs educational advisor for families with twice-exceptional children and Contributing Editor to the new publication 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter , I am co-founder and co-listowner of the

To Guide Entry
The primary objective of this unit is to sensitize both students and teachers to special education students and their needs and their rights. Many regular education students and teachers have had limited contact with special education students. They have very little understanding of the various handicaps of children with special needs. The information and activities in this unit will help Non-handicapped students get past their misconceptions and misunderstandings about children with handicaps. Teachers must help their students to understand and accept their peers with special needs. Teaching students about the various disabilities the other students have will foster an understanding of students with special needs. It is ignorance about disabilities and handicaps that breeds fear. Through education, non-handicapped students will learn to respect and understand the handicapped students as individuals. The second objective of this unit is to help the mainstreamed child with special needs to feel comfortable, accepted and confident in his or her classroom.
