Educational services are provided for students ages three through twenty- one who meet eligibility criteria established by Article 7 guidelines. Challenge Education Challenge Education Courses are designed to address the affective domain of learning and group building which is sometimes difficult to accomplish in an indoor setting. Information on and links for teaching strategies for students with diverse learning needs using the K-12 Social Studies Framework andthe Teaching Strategies for Students with Diverse Learning Needs will appear here, Keep watching.
During the month of June, 1996 we brought a group of Nebraska teachers together to develop a series of teaching strategies for diverse learners. This strategies are intended to be a tool to help the classroom teacher use the K-12 Social Studies Framework in their classroom for ALL of their students. These strategies were written for the student with diverse learning needs. We are using this term because we will be considering the special education student and the gifted student. This process is the beginning of an exciting process that will be a very positive addition to the Nebraska K-12 Social Studies Framework.
The completed resource can be viewed, printed and/or downloaded by selecting the following link. "Teaching Strategies for Students with Diverse Learning Needs"
This link is to a presentation that will give a very quick overview of the Teaching Strategies for Students with Diverse Learning Needs" . Adapted Physical Education
Physical education (PE) is a mandated curriculum area for all students in Louisiana. It is an essential part of the basic educational program and contributes to the development of the total individual. Every student is entitled to participate in a program of physical activity, specially designed if necessary. A well-planned, sequential program of physical education contributes significantly to the learning experience of all students, particularly students with disabilities.
Adapted physical education is specially designed physical education for students with disabilities who may not safely or successfully engage in unrestricted participation in the vigorous activities of the regular physical education program on a full-time basis, and for children with disabilities aged three through five who meet specific criteria.
In Louisiana, the delivery of adapted physical education required by an IEP must meet the following conditions:
Philosophy
In Louisiana, physical education for students with disabilities combines the most practical and successful methods that the education system as a whole has to offer. Physical education personnel work together in developing appropriate and beneficial programs for all students. Adapted physical education does not become the only answer for students who don't fit the traditional mold as it relates to physical activity. Granted, the severity of the disability may necessitate the provision of very specialized programming (i.e., one-to-one physical education instruction), but children with disabilities are not automatically separated philosophically or programmatically from the general physical education program.

Unique Bike Designs Help Children With Special Needs Master the Art of the Two-Wheeler
Engineer Dick Klein's unusual bike designs help children with developmental disabilities master the art of riding a two-wheeler at a special bike camp this week at Sonoma State University.
Children who have previously faced multiple barriers in learning to ride conventional bicycles typically experience success using these unique bike trainers.
"They can now participate alongside siblings and peers in this pastime that is a childhood rite-of-passage," says SSU kinesiology professor Elaine McHugh who directs the camp from 9 a.m. - 2 :30 p.m. in the main gymnasium.
Adapted PE teachers from Sonoma and other Bay Area counties staff the camp, along with students from SSU, SFSU, and St. Vincent de Paul High School. As the children learn to ride, students gain valuable experience

Unfortunately, students with disabilities often have limited opportunities in school athletics. The adapted section this month provides readers with information about a variety of disability sport opportunities that students can participate in when athletic programs are not available at their school. The disability sport opportunities listed here are not meant to be exhaustive, but are meant to provide just a glimpse into possible opportunities. An excellent base of ideas is provided for adapted physical education teachers, adapted physical activity professors, and for parents who's kid(s) have disabilities, to see how they might get involved with disability sports in their local area. Adapted Physical Education-FAQ
    (updated April 2000)
How can regular physical education activities be adapted to include students with disabilities? Adapted physical education is an individualized program of developmental activities, exercises, games, rhythms, and sport designed to meet the unique physical education needs of individuals with disabilities. Adapted physical education may take place in classes that range from those in regular physical education (i.e., students who are main streamed) to those in self contained classrooms. Although an adapted physical education program is individualized, it can be implemented in a group setting. It should be geared to each student's needs, limitations, and abilities. Whenever appropriate, students receiving an adapted physical education program should be included in regular physical education settings. Adapted physical education is an active program of physical activity rather than a sedentary alternative program. It supports the attainment of the benefits of physical activity by meeting the needs of students who might otherwise be relegated to passive experiences associated with physical education. In establishing adapted physical education programs, educators work with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and professionals in various disciplines. Adapted physical education may employ developmental, community-based, or other orientations and may use a variety of teaching styles. It takes place in schools and other agencies responsible for educating individuals. (From

Adapted phys ed means joy in motion; BOCES educators tailor activity to the child When Roy Speedling talks about leveling the playing field for kids with disabilities, he's not necessarily speaking metaphorically. To make physical activity available to kids with varying degrees of physical, mental and emotional disabilities, Speedling would not only level the field - he'd raise it, lower it, shrink it, stretch it or strip it of obstacles like goals and bases. Whatever it takes. "We focus not on what they can't do, but what they can do," says Speedling, a member of Ulster BOCES Teachers Organization who has spent nearly a quarter-century criss-crossing the roads of Ulster County, bringing a special brand of physical education to special kids. The philosophy of adapted (sometimes called "adaptive") physical education is simple. With the right supports, any kid can take part in - and benefit from - regular physical activity. That could be anything from situps to bowling, swimming, cross-country skiing and even horseback riding. "Think about it," Speedling says, "For a kid who spends all day in a wheelchair, a horse is just a different mode of getting around. And there's nothing like that smile you see when you get them up on a horse for the first time in their life."
