Undergraduate Adapted PE Adapted PE Teacher Certification Track Today in the United States, it is estimated that 95 percent of school-aged students are being provided physical education instruction in some type of general physical education environment. These students include persons with disabilities. There is a clear need to prepare general physical educators to provide the appropriate services to all students. Texas Woman’s University is the only University in the state of Texas that prepares physical education majors with these specialized competencies to take the Adapted Physical Education National Exam. This certification allows physical educators the right to call themselves Certified Adapted Physical Educators (CAPE). In addition, these students graduate with a second teaching field in special education. Most of the graduates of this program will teach and/or coach in the public schools. The average starting salary, depending on the school district is estimated between $28,000 to $30,000 for a 10–month period. During the summer many physical educators work at summer sports camps, teach summer school, or take graduate courses. This program provides a unique opportunity for physical educators to make themselves more employable and more capable to meet the needs of all children.

The assessment service is offered as a means of providing a detailed profile of movement strengths and weaknesses. Those children deemed to have difficulties would be able to attend the enrichment clinic with the aim of improving skill levels and building confidence. It is our belief that these children benefit from learning the skills that will assist them in everyday life and as such the clinic will not be physiotherapy based but relevant to the skills they need for successful participation in physical education and the classroom. This service is staffed by:

    What is Special Education?

    WHAT IS SPECIAL EDUCATION?
Special Education includes specially designed instruction and related services provided to students with disabilities, ages three to 21. These services are provided in an environment as near to an average classroom as possible.
    WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Students qualify for special education services if they are determined to have a disability and are in need of a specially designed instructional program to succeed in school. A student's disability may be in one or more areas: academic, physical, mental, emotional, information processing, or speech/language.
HOW DOES A STUDENT QUALIFY FOR SERVICES?
Anyone who is concerned about a student's progress in school may start the process. Teachers typically consult with each other and try different interventions to help a struggling student. The Teacher Assistance Team keeps a record of the applied interventions, duration of the intervention, and the results. When the team determines that further attempts at interventions would be repetitious or impractical in nature, it makes a referral to the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) by contacting the principal or chairperson.

    Determine Need
What is ARD Referral Process Post Secondary Education ... What's so Special How do you determine if a child needs special education services? To receive special education services, a child must meet specific criteria by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA). A parent, teachers, or administrator may recommend a student for consideration for special education services by contacting the school counselor. What exactly is the " ARD " Committee? ARD is an acronym for Admission, Review and Dismissal committee. This committee, which includes the parent, administrator, teacher and other staff familiar with the student's needs, makes decisions concerning the educational program/services of a student referred to or receiving special education support. What is the referral process for Special Education? The School Wide Assistance Team (SWAT) meets on each campus to consider the individual needs of students. Students may be referred to the SWAT by an administrator, classroom teacher, counselor or parent. In addition to special education, the SWAT considers referrals for supportive counseling, crisis intervention, Talented and Gifted, English as a Second Language, Americans with Disabilities Act eligibility and accommodations. The SWAT also may refer students for a special education evaluation. The SWAT is designed to comply with the requirements of Title II of the ADA.
