From the Beginning of Time,
Online: Using the Internet to Explore History

This lesson provides activities for Internet-based history lessons. The main activities require that students have access to the Internet in the classroom or in a lab. If students do not have Internet access, teachers can use the resources suggested here to create a variety of lessons.
If you have access to the Internet, but you don't have Internet access in your classroom or a lab you can use at times, don't give up. There are still ways to use the Internet:
  • Do you have a technology person or a technology support department? If so, ask them if they can project a computer screen. If you have one computer with Internet access, a projector can put the computer screen up on a big screen that the whole class can see.
  • Send students to the library, computer labs, or their home computers to do research (you can make the Internet one of many resources that your students may use).
  • Use the Internet for research on a topic. Searching on the Internet can be easier than looking through indices, card files, or catalogs in a library.
  • Use the lessons you find on the Internet. Most media sites (tv, film, magazines, newspapers) have lesson plans, teacher resources, and activities. Most of these are not dependent on Internet access.

TEACHING KIDS WITH ASPERGER SYNDROME FOR THE FIRST TIME
    GRADES: K-12
You're a teacher. You've just found out that you're going to have a student with Asperger Syndrome (AS) in class this year. You're in for an interesting year. And that's not coded language for "brace yourself." It's a real-life perspective that teaching a child with AS often gives you as many opportunities as challenges. First, the nuts and bolts stuff. Asperger Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder on the higher functioning end of the autism spectrum. It's an increasingly common diagnosis and many kids with AS are in regular school classes. That's really the bottom line for you: finding ways to make the year a good experience for every child in the room, including the one with AS and, of course, for you. You can't discount your needs in the process. So let's make them a priority, too. First, you may want to learn a bit more about Asperger Syndrome. One of the most user-friendly sources is the

Cultural Awareness - The children involved in this project were provided with individual plans of physical and occupational therapy to help them deal with developmental delays, physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida, or injuries and surgeries. Working together, Hill, a physical education teacher, and Phillips, a special education teacher, designed individual activity sheets for each child in consultation with physical and occupational therapists. Community Involvement for the Handicapped - "Sharilynn Russo, a speech pathologist, uses photographs of foods from restaurant menus, grocery items, and other objects from the community environment of her severely mentally and/or physically handicapped students to help them learn to communicate their needs and behave appropriately in public places."

  • A lesson on Adjectives taught with Music - The students will broaden their knowledge about adjectives through using them to describe both objects and music. Adjective - For every picture write at least five adjectives. Try to make up sentences with them. ADVERBILY - To provide a method of reinforcement for practicing the use of adverbs. Appropriate Use of Helping Verbs - Since it is very difficult for many students, especially special needs students, to remember which form of the verb to use with the helping verb, teaching them a contrived trick often helps them choose the correct form. Colorful Parts of Speech - To help students learn the functions of words within a sentence, we Language Arts teachers were often encouraged to teach them how to diagram. Coloring Language w/ adverbs and adjectives - The students will be able to use adverbs and adjectives to add meaning, mood, and color to a paragraph. Complete Sentences - After reading a chapter of The Indian in the Cupboard, show the students an example of Little Bear's choppy use of English (for example, "You come near, I hurt you.")

    Storytellers on Tour
Have students practice retelling folktales in their classroom. When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival
This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words
A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.

T he thought of a class field trip, especially in an outdoor setting; can cause jitters in even the most experienced teacher. The purpose of this guide is to provide lots of ideas for activities to keep students organized, on task, and excited about learning in Virginia's estuarine parks. The tips in this section will help to make the trip an outstanding learning experience.
Some great advice comes from John Falk (formerly Associate Director of Education at the Smithsonian Institution's Chesapeake Bay Center for Environmental Studies), who taught thousands of students who came to the Center for school field trips. He and his staff conducted a systematic study of the children's behavior and the following are some excerpts from an article written about those observations: Suppose you have taught your dog some new tricks ... You take him over to your friend's house (where he has never been) and ... your dog performs poorly. In fact, all he does is sniff around the corners of the room. Frustrated, you give up and let him sniff.
Interestingly enough, the next day you and your dog happen to be over at your friend's house again . . . This time, your dog performs perfectly.
