Student needing help with tuition or money for testing to get certifications.

Student In Need
My son is working 30 hours a week and going to school 22 hours a week. He cannot work any extra due to his asthma making him so tired. He cannot afford health insurance to pay for his asthma medication so is existing off over-the-counter meds that do not work. So he is exhausted all the time for lack of full lung capacity. He is only 24 years old and has been working since he was 14 years old, never without a job of some kind. He is a very caring compassionate person, no drugs, never in trouble of any kind so would love to see him finish his education in computer programming and get his A+ certification. This would help him get a much better job and hopefully get some insurance benefits. He chose the computer technical school so that he may work inside due to the asthma which is allergy induced and cold air induced. He took a student loan out and is trying to pay the interest on it each month plus a truck payment of $210 each month and the insurance of over $600 each six months because he is under 25. I want him to finish his schooling but it is getting to be too much for him financially. His dream was to go to the music institute in another state to continue his music studies. He had to give that up even though it is still his passion because he knows computer technology has a better future. His student loan will soon go up to over $100 a month plus he has to pay for the testing for his certifications as he finishes each segment of the computer school. It is about $200 for each segment. He is very good and gets very high scores. I would hate to see him quit because of lack of funds since he cannot work full time and go to school right now.

Hi! My name is Karen... I am a single mom of a 16 year old mentally ill daughter. In March of 2003, she tried to kill herself by cutting her wrists. After 2 hospitalizations and hundreds of doctor and counselor visits later, I have hope that we are on the way to recovery.
Due to the ensuing medical bills ( I could not afford health insurance for her, so she was uninsured at the time of her suicide attempt and the bills added up to $34,000), and missed time from work, I became severely financially distressed. My credit is not at all good because of all the bills, and in an attempt to lessen my monthly expenses and try to make arrangements on the medical bills, I looked for the leased expensive way that I could live.
I found that if I bought a fifth wheel trailer and put it in a park I could bring my total living expenses down to about $800.00 a month, which would give me some money left over to pay on the bills.
Since my credit is shot due to all the bills, a friend agreed to finance the trailer in his name so that I could get a decent interest rate (7.75%), and I would make all of the payments and insurance payments on it. I thought he was doing this to be nice and help me out during a difficult time, but I found out different.

The time to act is Now!
In Alabama, 40.7 percent of female-headed households live below the poverty line. In 1972, there were 6,000 patients at Bryce State Mental Hospital. Today there are only 400. Between 35 and 40 percent of any group of homeless people suffer from mental illness. On any given day in the Birmingham area, there are roughly 1,920 highly visible homeless people. They include those seeking emergency shelter or living on the streets. In addition to the 1,920 sheltered and street homeless, it can be conservatively estimated that, on a given day, another 1,225 people in Birmingham are less visibly homeless, that is, "doubling up," by relying on relatives and friends for temporary housing. About 38% of Birmingham's highly visibly homeless are women, up from 34% in 1993. 25% of Birmingham's highly visible homeless are children under 18, up from 21% in 1995. There were 520 more homeless persons counted in 2001 than in 1995, a 37% increase in the homeless sheltered and street population between 1995 and 2001.

Richard Leathes Gives Advice On Sixth Form Options If you have a son or daughter studying for GCSEs or the equivalent, he or she, like most 15 and 16 year olds, is probably still some way from decisions about higher education and careers. At this stage there is, of course, plenty of room for the development of ideas and interests, and it is important to have an open mind about all the options. Some preliminary planning, however, is essential. more...
