Important Information about the Educational Rights for Children Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
As families leave the areas most devastated by Hurricane Katrina, they will disperse to friends’ and relatives’ homes across the country. Others may be truly homeless, or be placed in temporary housing at hotels, motels or military bases by FEMA. For children who have been traumatized by the loss of home, friends, and perhaps death or injury of family members, returning to school is not only important for educational purposes; attendance at a school becomes an oasis of normalcy for them... Special Educational Needs And The Law
SEN Legal specialises in special education laws and children with special needs. We provide a service throughout England and Wales offering advice, help and representation on all aspects of education law, including special needs education (assessment, statementing, placement, Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST)), admissions, special education inclusion / exclusions, school refusals, bullying and home tuition.
Special Education Laws
We provide assistance with special education inclusion, help for parents of children with special needs , and help for former pupils. Many former pupils with special needs feel that they were failed by schools or local authorities. We can help with school refusals and exclusion from schools. Whether your goal is inclusion in mainstream schools or inclusion in special education schools, we offer an experienced and independent source of information.
Inclusion
Decisions to exclude are subject to rights of appeal. The number of exclusions has risen over the years. For some, it can be a blessed release with the opportunity to find more appropriate provision. On the other hand there is often a desire to put the record straight.

This is an unofficial page. Any questions asked and answers given, are as one friend to another. For the final word consult a local authority, doctor, case manager or councilor. Each state is slightly different, what is expected in New York may be illegal in California. This page is meant as a forum for sharing ideas and experiences, not as a definitive legal or professional source.

The Focus
It is my intention, with this page, to focus on domestic, special needs adoption by single adults. By domestic I mean a child that is living in the USA and born of US biological parents. Special needs by legal definition can include many things, but the most significant is an older child. If you are looking at foreign or infant adoption, you may find some useful information here, but that is not the primary content of this site. Nail Patella Syndrome (also called Fong's Disease, Hereditary Onycho-Osteodysplasia ['HOOD'] is characterized by several typical abnormalities of the arms and legs as well as kidney disease and glaucoma. It has been recognized as a hereditary condition for over 100 years and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. That is, the risk of transmission is 50% per pregnancy, irrespective of gender (just like flipping a coin). Approximately 20% of cases are sporadic, being the result of a new mutation. The incidence is approximately 1 in 50,000 and occurs throughout the world in all ethnic groups. NPS Annual Conference

Learn about the special needs and health concerns of premature infants, as well as the innovative care they receive that allows them to thrive long after they leave the hospital.
http://kidshealth.org/parent/growth/growing/preemies.html

KidsHealth
Parents Growing Up
Premature infants, known as preemies, come into the world earlier than full-term infants. Prematurity occurs when a pregnancy lasts fewer than 37 weeks; full-term infants are born 38 to 42 weeks after the mother's last menstrual period (LMP). There are many causes of preterm delivery. Sometimes it's caused by the mother's lifestyle choices during pregnancy : smoking, drinking alcohol, using drugs, eating poorly, not gaining enough weight, exposure to physical stress, and poor prenatal care are all causes of preterm delivery. Often, however, the cause is not within the mother's control. The mother could have a hormone imbalance, a structural abnormality of the uterus , a chronic illness, an infection, or several other things that could lead to a premature birth. In addition, preterm delivery is more likely when a woman is over age 35, under age 19, or is carrying multiple fetuses. And sometimes the cause is simply unknown. Premature infants have many special needs that make their care different from that of full-term infants, which is why they often begin their lives after delivery in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) . The NICU is designed to provide an atmosphere that limits stress to the infant and meets basic needs of warmth, nutrition, and protection to assure proper growth and development.

Selected Media Coverage For Older Drivers, "The Options Are Terrible' The number of older Americans is expected to double over the next 25 years. All but the most fortunate seniors will confront an array of medical and other constraints on their mobility even as they continue to seek an active community life. This brief challenges the easy assumptions that underlie most policy debates on providing transportation to the elderly. It discusses how an aging society adds to a range of transportation problems and argues that Congress should consider special approaches to meet the mobility and access needs of the elderly as it debates reauthorization of the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century (TEA-21). Welcome to our place. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed working on it. I have created this, as we are the parents of a special needs child. As well, we have a son who has issues from being the sibling of a special needs sister and who himself has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit.
We have created this page in hopes of providing support to parents and caregiver's of special needs children and adults alike. We have created pages for both of our children. Ashlee's is titled Ashlee's Story - everything about her from A to Z. Tyler's page is titled Tyler's Place - here you will learn all about Tyler and you will find out that his favorite sport is hockey and his favorite team is "Toronto Maple Leafs".
Also very dear to our heart is the Siblings R Special 2 page we created. This page was created, as having a child with special needs we as parents unintentionally lose sight of the issues concerning the siblings, as they sometimes get lost in the cracks by no fault of anyone

With a population of 1.5 million active duty military members, each day around the globe, there are an estimated 540,000 active duty sponsors each caring for a family member with special medical or educational needs. STOMP is the only National Parent Training and Information Center for military families providing support and advice to military parents without regard of the type of medical condition their child has. Parents of children with special needs face many challenges:
  • Feelings of isolation and anxiety. Difficulty navigating disjointed services. Severe financial worries. Inadequate information.
These challenges are compounded when the family concerned is military. While all military families face certain challenges such as frequent PCS moves/military member being placed in harm's way/deployments, our families with special needs family members face additional difficulties, for example:
  • Continuity in provision of IEP services from state to state or from state to DODDS/DDESS (no legal obligation to implement current IEP from another state) Availability of military member during IEP meetings/ medical treatments/procedures Finding specialists/physicians who will take TRICARE (military health entitlement program) Re-establishing relationships with key medical and educational personnel Re-establishing eligibility for community resources to assist child and facing waiting lists for services needed
