I am always in awe of the great work Special Ed teachers do. As the Internet continues to evolve, we are beginning to see high quality support resources for the wonderful people who work in these domains. What struck me in doing the ground work for this issue was how many quality sites have disappeared over the last two years. The WWW is a work in progress! Here's a sampling of the best that's out there. Special thanks to Sue Shaw and Jerry Blumengarten for their recommendations! Dive right in!

    May 8, 2005 Hanafin announces 660 extra special needs teachers for primary schools from Sept 2005
    This means 1,110 additional teaching posts
    for special needs children since last June

    The Minister for Education and Science Mary Hanafin, T.D., today announced 660 extra special needs teaching posts will be put in place in primary schools from next September. Announcing these new posts, Minister Hanafin said these teachers will " ensure that children will have access to resource teaching support as soon as they need it, without having to wait for an individual application to be processed". Each primary school will be allocated resource teaching hours, based on their enrolment figures, to cater for the needs of pupils with high-incidence special educational needs, such as dyslexia. Resources for these pupils were previously only considered on an individual application basis, supported by psychological assessments. For many parents this was a lengthy and expensive process. The model reflects the fact that pupils with more general learning difficulties are distributed throughout the education system, while taking into account the differing needs of the most disadvantaged schools and the evidence that boys have greater difficulties than girls in this regard.

    Special Needs Children:
    "The School Act specifies that school boards are responsible for determining if a child is in need of a special education program. Children with special needs, including those who are gifted and talented , require specialized learning opportunities in order to receive an education that is appropriate for their learning needs. School boards must provide programming for all school-age children, including children with special needs, who live in their district." From: Alberta Learning. (2003). Handicap or Disability
    "The term disability is derived from the Latin prefix dis-, meaning negation, separation, lack of, or opposite of; and the Latin habilitas, meaning fitness, and habere, indication to have or to be easily handled. Disability today indicates the lack of power or ability to do something" (Reynolds, 2000, p. 321).

    1. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has undertaken a review of measures to cater to children with special needs, in both Special Education (SPED) schools and mainstream schools.  We will introduce the following initiatives to raise the quality of education for children with special needs: a.  Enhance support for SPED schools
    Provide additional funding to improve the quality of professional resources in SPED schools by helping the SPED schools to recruit better qualified teachers, providing better professional development for the staff and improving the curriculum design;
    Build an additional SPED  school to cater to children with autism;
    Increase support for SPED  school infrastructure, by accelerating and completing the redevelopment of 9 purpose-built SPED schools by 2008, and providing additional development funding.
    b.  Enhance support for mainstream schools , especially by recruiting and training more teachers in special needs education.
    In all, MOE will set aside $55 million a year till 2008 to implement these initiatives.
