The Early Republic The Early Republic The World Stage The Cold War The Information Age Resources Between 1800 and 1860, the number of Americans learning elementary mathematics multiplied as several states established public or common schools to provide basic education. Swiss educator Johann Pestalozzi argued that students would learn better if they associated ideas with objects and visual images. Many Americans adopted Pestalozzi’s ideas, supplementing rote learning of arithmetic with blackboard drawings, attractive charts, and lessons using objects. COVER OF RAY'S PRACTICAL ARITHMETIC

From colonial times, American children used slates to write down their work. Slates also were a convenient tool for surveyors and others who worked in the field away from pen and paper. In the 19th and 20th centuries, slates were sometimes sold with numeral frames. Mathematics teachers with ties to England and France introduced blackboards into the United States around 1800. By the 1840s, these erasable surfaces were used for teaching a wide range of subjects in elementary schools, colleges, and academies. The Massachusetts educator William A. Alcott visited over 20,000 schoolhouses. “A blackboard, in every school house,” he wrote, “is as indispensably necessary as a stove or fireplace.” Teachers used blackboards in lecturing, for setting problems, and for presenting student work. Early blackboards were wood, painted black. From the 1850s, several vendors sold specially formulated “liquid slating” to be used as paint.

160. Education Rights Of Students With Disabilities
CLE works to vindicate the rights of students with disabilities, emphasizing lowincome children and youth. It participates in litigation, federal and state legislative advocacy, and technical assistance to attorneys and parents.
http://www.cleweb.org/issues/rights.htm
Educational Rights of Students with Disabilities Project CLE has worked since its inception to vindicate the right of all students with disabilities to full and equal opportunity in public education, with a particular emphasis on issues critical to low-income children and youth. CLE pursues this goal through participation in litigation, federal and state legislative and administrative advocacy, the provision of technical assistance to attorneys representing students and parents on a fee-for-service basis, and training for attorneys, parents and other advocates. CLE also publishes materials concerning the legal rights of students with disabilities. In addition to enforcing rights under disability rights laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, CLE's disability work addresses rights and issues under other civil rights and general education laws. Current focuses of CLE advocacy include education reform and students with disabilities; rights in vocational education and school-to-work programs; disciplinary exclusion; rights of court-involved youth, including incarcerated youth and students against whom schools file juvenile delinquency petitions; misclassification of children of color and language minority children, and disproportionate placement in separate special education classes; and implementation and ramifications of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997.
