http://www.theunit.com/balerolessonplan.htm
This lesson plan has been prepared because of the large number of Spanish Teachers, Social Studies Teachers and Physical Education Teachers that have come forward and contacted the Balero Players' Association and let us know how they use baleros at their schools. The model program is Spanish Teacher Victor Parlier's at Mohawk High School in Ohio where Balero Competitions culminate in an annual school wide balero tournament in the gymnasium where the winner takes a trophy. Oscar Ortiz of the Iowa State Education Association held a workshop for teachers on baleros in the classroom and has started a balero program at his local school. From Mexico, Benjamin Martinez, a physical education instructor teaches the art of balero. These are just a few of the teacher's out there that are already teaching / utilizing balero. The lesson plan has been written for use in Spanish Class but it can be utilized equally for Social Studies, Physical Education, Industrial Arts or other Foreign Language Classes such as French, Italian, Portuguese, and Japanese. For printing this document it is recommended you download the page formatted Word version: Implementing Baleros into the Classroom See Also: For Elementary School Students: How to make Baleros For Jr. High / High School and up - Turn a balero on a wood lathe:

    • Subject Area: Foreign Language
Unit Description The prime consideration for students learning Spanish is that they get the learning motivation from exploring these Spanish-speaking countries in the world They know what kind of people they will use their Spanish to communicate with. Also this unit will help students to get the chance to look deeper at these countries, not only some countries' names flashing in their brain but profound research impressing them in the multicultural background behind the language. In this unit, students will conduct primary and secondary research to know the "hispanohablantes" in the world. These explorations will serve as windows for these Spanish-speaking countries for students to acquire information and impression from different perspectives . Students are supposed to conduct the researches by using their Spanish ability to comprehend these information on Internet. Through team works, they will target one country as research topic, collect information using Internet resources as well as library reources, share their research with other groups, and visit these web sites set up by other groups that relate to these Hispanic countries.

  • They are to learn the concept well enough to later teach the concept to the rest of their class (with the teacher's supervision) using over-head transparencies, etc.
  • They create the homework assignments as well as the quizzes that will be administered to that class.
  • After the team teaches the whole class, another class period can be used for each of the members of the team to head smaller review groups, where one "teacher" prepares her/his group for the coming quiz (as in study groups). http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/Day.html
CELEBRATIONS: DAY OF THE DEAD MINI-UNIT SUBTOPIC: Day of the Dead, or "Dia de los Muertos" GRADE LEVEL: 4th - 5th grade AUTHOR: Andrea Pretti BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Day of the Dead also called "Dia de los Muertos," is a holiday (or festival) which is celebrated in Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, and other areas in Central and South America populated with the Latino ethnic background. The Day of the Dead is also celebrated in areas of the United States, such as California, Texas, and many others, in which the Mexican/American heritage exists. November 2nd is the official date for Day of the Dead, although it is celebrated between October 31st and November 2nd. These dates correspond with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. This correspondence results from the Catholic Church's efforts to "find similarities between the indigenous and Christian beliefs." This celebration has a complex history that has been transformed through the years. Today the celebration takes place at about the same time ancient corn festivals were celebrated, when food from a plentiful harvest was shared with the deceased. Now certain customs vary within different regions. The best way to describe this holiday is to say it is a time when family members who have died are remembered. In Mexico, this festival is considered to be the most important holiday of the year. Although this celebration is associated with the dead, it is not portrayed as a morbid or depressing time, but rather a period full of life, happiness, color, food, family, and fun. There is excitement everywhere. In many areas, outdoor markets are displayed in which they sell many symbolic goods, such as special breads, flowers, pottery, baskets, candles, paper puppets, candy skulls, etc. The main symbols of this holiday are skulls and skeletons, which are displayed throughout the cities. Scenes of skeletons hugging, marching, dancing, and laughing are seen in window displays on the streets. Marigolds are another significant symbol for the Day of the Dead festivity, and are known as the "flower of the dead." Their scent is believed to "attract the souls and draw them back."
