The Thai people, while being a sovereign nation, have over the centuries been influenced by many other cultures. China and India play a big role in their history. Religion and geography also have a very strong influence on the foods of this country. The pantry of Thailand is much like that of China, with the addition of Thai style basil and the use of several different chilies. The spicy aspect of Thai food is probably due to the strong influence of India over the centuries.
