collegelevel course called S210 Second-Year spanish composition. To help students through this maze, and in response to a specific student request,
http://users.ipfw.edu/jehle/COURSES/mystuff.htm
An Introduction to
My WWW Spanish Language Materials The Spanish language course materials available on my web pages have been developed over many years for a variety of classes, but primarily for an intermediate college-level course called S210 Second-Year Spanish Composition There are numerous components to this collection of materials:
  • Grammatical explanations , consisting of a series of approximately 36 lessons on aspects of Spanish language. I conduct my classes primarily in Spanish, but these presentations are written in English, with examples given in Spanish with English translations; many students at the intermediate level have serious problems understanding aspects of language written in a foreign language, and a few simply balk at such a prospect. These explanations are heavily weighted in favor of the most challenging aspect of Spanish for English speakers: verb forms and uses. Individual lessons normally present an overview of a complete topic, for example, the present indicative for all verbs. This hopefully enables the students to synthesize the material to which they have already been exposed in other classes. [In my intermediate writing class, the pace also allows the past and past perfect subjunctive tenses to be reviewed in the middle of the semester, as opposed to the usual practice of leaving them until the very end of the first year (if at all), and the very end of the second year; thus students have half of the semester to practice these forms and accompanying concepts.]

    NORMAS DE CLASE
    Class
We will meet five days in the six-day schedule for 45 minutes. You are expected to arrive on time and prepared for class. You must bring all materials to class—that includes your binder with clean paper for notes, a pencil or a pen, your homework, and any books we are using at that time. (You won’t need all your books everyday.) Preparedness is part of each day’s homework—if you are unprepared on more than one occasion, your homework grade will reflect that fact. Be sure to gather whatever you need for class in your free time, and not during class time—the more class time you miss, the farther you’ll fall behind. After today, class will be conducted nearly entirely “en español.” I know that you will not understand everything that I say and that is totally normal. However, it is important to hear and use as much Spanish as possible, so I will use it 99.9% of the time, and I expect you to do the same.
    Materials
Each of you will be required to keep a neat, organized binder of your materials. You can share the binder with another class, but be sure to have 3 divided sections—one for Spanish notes, one for homework, and one for tests, quizzes, and compositions. At the front of your notes section, you should have a few blank pages to use as your “personal dictionary”; as you learn new vocabulary, you’ll write each word with its definition so that you can find it again easily. Each activity and exercise that you do is important—don’t throw homework or tests away! You should have at least one trimester’s work in your binder at all times. You should also have, at home and occasionally in class, a good Spanish/English dictionary that you can use whenever necessary.

This year will be challenging—we have a lot to learn, and in order to ensure our success, it’s important that everyone understands the rules and expectations of this class. So, the following information is very important for the course of the entire year. Class We will meet every day for 45 minutes. It is very important that every student arrives on time and prepared for class. Your other teachers and I understand that you have to travel to the upper school building and we do grant you five minutes to do so; therefore, arriving late is unacceptable. You must bring all materials to class—that includes your binder with clean paper for notes (not borrowed from a neighbor), a pencil or a pen (not borrowed from a neighbor), your personal dictionary, your homework, and any books we are using at that time. (You won’t need all your books everyday.) Preparedness is part of each day’s homework—if you are repeatedly unprepared, your homework grade will reflect that fact. Be sure to gather whatever you need for class in your free time, and not during class time. Slowly but surely, more and more of our class will be conducted “en español.” Don’t be afraid! I know that you will not understand everything that I say—if you did understand everything, there’d be no reason to come to class! However, it is important when learning a foreign language to hear and use it as much as possible, so I will use Spanish most of the time, and I expect you to do the same. Class participation not only helps to make you comfortable with Spanish, it can also improve your grades!
