The Dewey Cannon
The Dewey Cannon This cannon, captured in the Spanish-American War by Admiral Dewey, was presented to Three Oaks when its citizens raised $1,400 for a memorial to the men of the battleship Maine. This was the largest contribution, per capita, of any community in the nation. "Three Oaks Against the World," a local paper proudly boasted. This park was dedicated October 17, 1899, by President William McKinley, and others. Presentation of the cannon took place on June 28, 1900. Guest of honor was Helen Miller Gould, called the Spanish-American War's "Florence Nightingale." Thousands of people were in attendance on each occasion.

Spanish-American War in Motion Pictures at the Library of Congress coming soon
Your local library and reference librarian T ension between the United States and Spain had been building up since October 13, 1873 when a sailing vessel, the "Virginius," flying the American flag, was seized by the Spanish war steamer "Tornado" on the suspicion that it was conveying munitions to Cuban insurrectionists. A revolt against Spain erupted in Cuba in 1895, and as the fighting dragged out over the subsequent years, concern in America increased. As a protective measure for American interests, the United States, in January 1898, dispatched the battleship U.S.S. Maine to the harbor of Havana. On the fateful night of February 15 a tremendous explosion sent the U.S.S. Maine to the bottom of that harbor. Two hundred and sixty-six officers and men of the United States Navy met sudden death in the twisted wreckage. News of the catastrophe sent shock waves all over America. Already provoked by the prolonged colonial misrule in Cuba, public sentiment was ignored.

Distant Possessions: The Parting of the Ways
By Andrew Carnegie
From The Gospel of Wealth (New York: The Century Co., 1901).
Originally published in the North American Review (Aug. 1898). T wice only have the American people been called upon to decide a question of such vital import as that now before them. Is the Republic, the apostle of Triumphant Democracy, of the rule of the people, to abandon her political creed and endeavor to establish in other lands the rule of the foreigner over the people, Triumphant Despotism? Is the Republic to remain one homogeneous whole, one united people, or to become a scattered and disjointed aggregate of widely separated and alien races? Is she to continue the task of developing her vast continent until it holds a population as great as that of Europe, all Americans, or to abandon that destiny to annex, and to attempt to govern, other far distant parts of the world as outlying possessions, which can never be integral parts of the Republic? In considering the issue now before us, the agitator, the demagogue, has no part. Not feeling, not passion, but deliberate judgment alone, should have place. The question should be calmly weighed; it is not a matter of party, nor of class; for the fundamental interest of every citizen is a common interest, that which is best for the poorest being best for the richest. Let us, therefore, reason together, and be well assured, before we change our position, that we are making no plunge into an abyss. Happily, we have the experience of others to guide us, the most instructive being that of our own race in Great Britain.

The role of the Merchant Marine in bringing troops and supplies to support the invasions of the Philippines and Cuba.
http://www.USMM.org/spanishamerican.html
American Merchant Marine in Spanish-American War In 1895, when the Armed Forces again had a great need for oceangoing ships, the Merchant Marine was no longer in a position to supply all of the required shipping as it had done in the past, because it had dwindled away to such an extent that American ships were carrying only 10 percent of the exports of the United States. The Army and Navy had to buy foreign vessels and had to take care of their own ship operating requirements by establishing sea transportation services. At the outbreak of the war with Spain the Quartermaster had only 10 small harbor boats and was unprepared for a large overseas movement . The Navy was well equipped with warships to fight a war with a weak country like Spain, but they lacked supply ships and coaling facilities, both at home and abroad. When war was declared, the Navy had warships in Hong Kong without a single auxiliary, so they purchased two ships: the Nanshan with 3,000 tons of coal on board, and the
