These rosters were taken with permission from the book "Fighting Twentieth: An Account of the Kansas Volunteers in the Spanish American War. 1898-1899" by John A. Ostertag. He in turn took much of his information from a small booklet printed in the Fall of 1899 upon the return of the men who were called the Fighting Twentieth of Kansas. It is a documentation of Kansas youth who answered President McKinley's call for 120,000 volunteers to wage war against Spain. John's book also contains additional historical accounts, photographs and other information not included in this web page. The book is still in print and may be ordered from John by writing to him at 3005 Charles, St. Joseph, MO 64501-3342. Cost is $15. The men arrived at Camp Leedy in Topeka, Kansas and after six rain sodden weeks, were entrained to San Francisco - only to cool their heels for much longer than any of them expected or desired. They were placed in undesirable quarters and no uniforms were issued for several weeks due to snarled red tape in the War Department. They were the first to arrive at San Francisco and about the last to leave for Manila instead of Cuba, as first believed.

Led by Lt. Colonel "Teddy" Roosevelt, the 1st New Mexico Cavalry, known as the "Rough Riders," charged up Kettle Hill. Despite heavy enemy fire, they succeeded in reaching the top. Continuing with the attack, they seized the heights overlooking the city of Santiago. This action is known as the Battle of San Juan Hill, which led to the Spanish surrender two weeks later. Spanish-American War
  • War with Spain in 1898 over the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor. Turns out she sank by accident or negligence, not deliberate action. The war was primarily agitated by William Randolph Hearst
  • As war booty, America seized the Philippines and Cuba and Puerto Rico.
  • This war was actually very short, but seems longer today because it has subsumed the entirety of the Philippine-American War . Which is why history books don't mention the Philippine-American War.

The Spanish American War - One American's View
By Patrick McSherry The article below was written for the website entitled The Odyssey of Spain in the Overseas Provinces
The Spanish American War - One American's View I have been asked by the webmaster of this site to contribute some information concerning the American view of the Spanish American War. This is a more complicated question than it first seems. We must look at the question from three viewpoints - that of the average American of 1998, that of the average American of 1898, and that of an American historian who studies the 1898 period. The view of the average American of 1998: Quite frankly, if you asked the average American of 1998 about the war, you would probably be met with a quizzical stare. The Spanish American War, in spite of its tremendous implications for the United States, Spain, Cuba, Philippines, Guam, Hawaii, and other places, is seldom mentioned in the popular media or brought to the attention of the public. Most may have heard the statement "Remember the MAINE," but with no understanding what the MAINE itself was. Few have any idea of the involvement of the U.S. in

When the U. S. declared war on Spain in April 1898, four regiments were filled with Kansas volunteers. Most Americans were eager to participate in what was later called the "splendid little war." By August 1898, the U. S. had defeated the declining Spanish empire in the Caribbean and the Pacific and emerged with an empire of its own that included Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands. read more Find resources on the Spanish American War. Spanish-American War 1898
On the night of 15 February l898 the battleship USS Maine was shattered by an explosion which sent the ship and two-thirds of her crew to the bottom of Havana harbor. Bolstered by wide-spread sympathy for those who were seeking Cuban independence from Spain's colonial rule, the emotion-charged Maine tragedy forced the already strained Spanish-American relations to the breaking point, precipitating a short war rapidly decided by two naval engagements.
On 1 May the U.S. Pacific Squadron under Commodore George Dewey steamed into Manila Bay, Philippine Islands, and destroyed the Spanish fleet. Two months later, Admiral William Sampson repeated with an annihilating victory over the Spanish in a running battle off Santiago, Cuba.
In addition to Sampson and Dewey's crushing victories, naval operations included blockade of the Cuban coast, bombardment of Spanish fortifications at San Juan, Puerto Rico by battleship USS Iowa ., armored cruiser USS
