While the United States Surgeon General at first replied that the Pennsylvania Hospital's offer of beds would not be needed, a later report by hospital superintendent Daniel Test recorded otherwise: During the past month (July, 1898) the facilities of the Hospital have been tried as never before since its capacity has increased, and we have again had an opportunity to witness the ability of the Hospital to meet emergencies. On the 5th inst. ["inst." was a 19th century abbreviation for "the present month"], 87 Soldiers were admitted and although they arrived 18 hours before expected, every one was placed in bed in one hour. On the 15th inst., we received 43 more and on the 20th inst., 49 arrived .... In September and October, the record showed an additional 113 soldiers were admitted. Altogether, 292 soldiers were cared for, some of them transported from ports of entry other than Philadelphia on special Red Cross trains manned by Pennsylvania Hospital staff. The large majority of them were ill with typhoid fever.

The Spanish-American War Beyond Manifest Destiny
At the end of the nineteeth century, some Americans sensed a restlessness in the air. The western frontier was rapidly becoming settled. Many people agreed with historian Frederick Jackson Turner when he predicted that "American energy will continually demand a wider field for its exercise." Turner believed that for the American spirit to thrive, it needed a frontier.
Influential leaders like Senator Henry Cabot Lodge from Massachusetts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, and newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst took Turner's ideas one step further. They believed that America was in fact destined to expand beyond its borders. Expansion, as Roosevelt later explained, meant "not only the extension of liberty and order, and the bringing nearer by gigantic strides of the day when peace shall come to the whole earth."
An Opportunity for Expansion Cuba, only ninety miles off the coast of the United States, presented American espansionists with an opportune chance to end their country's isolation and assert its power in world affairs. Spanish control over the island had weakened considerably since the late 1860s, when Cuban rebels first began to agitate for their independence. In the 1870s a prolonged uprising took place against the Spanish; and in 1895, a revolution began.
In the United States, citizens sympathetic to the Cuban rebels were calling for war against Spain. Sensation reports such as this appeared in the "Yellow Press":

GENERAL:
The USS INDIANA was one of the newest American battleships in 1898. She took part in the destruction of the Spanish Fleet at the Battle of Santiago off Cuba on July 3, one of the two major naval engagements of the war.
BACKGROUND:
The USS INDIANA was one of the new fleet of battleships promoted a special board created in 1890 to recommend the manner in which to update the U.S. Navy so that it could defend adequately against the imperial world powers, as well as by the nations of South America (several of which had larger vessels than any in the U.S. Navy). The board realized the need for battleships with a long-range cruising capability. However, many members of the United States Congress were in favor of Isolationism, and opposed long-range battleships as they were obviously not intended strictly for coastal defense. To assuage fears of the Isolationists, the new class of vessels were called "Sea-going coast-line Battleships". The name, an all-covering oxymoron, was thought to be particularly brilliant and useful by Theodore Roosevelt after he became Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy. Three ships were authorized for construction, INDIANA BB-1

Military Aspects of the Spanish-American War
John Hay , the diplomat and writer, described the Spanish-American War as that “splendid little war.” For some it was just that. The war lasted less than 4 months, only a few hundred men were killed in battle and a generation grown weary of their elders’ Civil War tales had its own conflict to embellish. No American conflict ever enjoyed greater popular support and exacted a lower cost. On paper, Spain appeared to be a formidable power. Upwards of 200,000 regular soldiers were stationed in Cuba and thousands of Cubans remained loyal to the Spanish government. By contrast, the U.S. army numbered only about 25,000 in 1898 and most of those soldiers had been confined to supervision of the Native Americans in the West. The major difference would be made by the navies. The Spanish fleet boasted impressive numbers, but was in poor repair and badly out of date. Beginning in the 1880s, the American navy had instituted expansion programs, heeding the calls of such figures as Alfred Thayer Mahan The war was contested in two divergent theaters, the

Course: Modern American History Topic: Spanish American War Era
Outcomes: Peoples of the Nation and World, Geography
Teacher Background:
Students should recognize the political, humanitarian, and economic implications which were involved with the acquisition of the Philippines following the Spanish American War. Information needed to be included:
  • Present reasons for acquiring the Philippines Identify government's official position for acquisition of the Philippines Explore the reasons for opposition to acquiring the Philippines Identify ways the U.S. government attempted to help the Philippines develop its economy, educational system, etc.
Description of Sample Activities:
1. Have students compute the distance between the U.S. and the Philippines. Upon completion of this activity, instruct students to imagine themselves as late 19th century United States citizens. Have them form teams and debate the pros/cons of annexing the Philippines.
2. Have students research the economic conditions and educational system of the late 19th century Philippines and compare these conditions to those of the Philippines of the late 1940's. Based on these comparisons have students write a conclusion to the following question: Did the Philippines benefit from a United States takeover?
3. Have students research Teddy Roosevelt's beliefs and attitudes about the Philippines. Using the events that actually took place in the Pacific Rim in the 20th century, have students assess the validity of Roosevelt's position.

The commercial cinema was barely two years old when the United States declared war against Spain in April of 1898. Judging from the work of leading film historians, it would be difficult to overestimate the importance of the Spanish-American War to a fledgling American film industry in the wake of cinema's putative novelty year. In "Commercial Warfare and the Spanish-American War, 1897-1898," Charles Musser argues that "with the onset of the Spanish-American War the motion picture industry discovered a new role and exploited it, gaining in confidence as a result.... It was the ongoing production of a few firms [e.g., Biograph and Edison]," writes Musser, "that provided the commercial foundation for the American industry, and it was the war that gave this sector new life" ( Emergence of Cinema Robert C. Allen has argued that the biograph became a "star attraction in vaudeville [during the Spanish-American War] as the American motion picture took on a new role: that of visual newspaper Vaudeville and Film The war film craze continued through the summer of 1898...[making the Spanish American War] probably the most propitious event in the early history of the American cinema.... Sigsbee, late commander of the USS MAINE, detailing the actions of Private William Anthony, USMC, after the explosion, and recommending him for promotion. NAVY DEPARTMENT Washington, D.C. April 8, 1898 Sir: I desire to call the attention of the Department to the soldierly conduct of Private William Anthony on the occasion of the explosion of the MAINE. At the time of the explosion I was in the Captain’s cabin of the MAINE. The lights of the vessel were instantly obscured and the apartments were filled with smoke; there was immediate and intense darkness. On leaving my cabin through the usual passage forward, feeling my way along, I was met near the outer door of the superstructure by Private Antony who was coming into the cabin to fulfill, on that dangerous occasion, the precise duties of his position by notifying me of the explosion. He ran against me in the darkness, apologized hastily, and reported to me that the ship was blown up and was sinking. We then proceeded together to the quarter-deck.

Exploration and Discovery The fifteenth and sixteenth century voyages of discovery brought Europe, Africa, and the Americas into direct contact, producing an exchange of foods, animals, and diseases that scholars call the “Columbian Exchange.” Colonization Here, you will learn about the economic, religious, and social developments that led Europeans to colonize new lands; the differences between Spanish, French, and English colonization; and the difficulties they encountered as a result of the varied climates and topographies. The Origins and Nature of New World Slavery Slave labor played an indispensable role in the settlement and development of the New World. This chapter examines slavery in the ancient, medieval, and early modern world; the process of enslavement; the Middle Passage; and the evolution of slavery in colonial, revolutionary, and antebellum America.

Hampton Roads Military History Books on the Spanish-American War Military History Periodicals Virginia State History ... American Local History Network Topic Page The Spanish-American War (SAW) was one of the five most important foreign wars in US history. In the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the American States achieved, and then defended, their independence. In the Mexican-American War, the United States established its Continental dominance. In World War II, the US halted the most violent and destructive ideology to date, and established itself as the clear leader of the free world. In the Spanish-American War, the US laid the foundation for its leadership role in WW II (and WW I), the Cold War, and beyond. It was the SAW which provided international recognition of the US as a great power. At the same time, the SAW had two major impacts within the US. One the one hand, it made Americans aware of a greater world around them, and of the need for the US to play its part. By defeating Spain hands down (after much speculation concerning the size and might of Spain's armed forces) Americans also gained self confidence in the ability of the US to project power abroad. On the other hand, the SAW was promoted largely as a "crusade" against an evil regime – much like both World Wars, like Korea and Vietnam, and like the ongoing war against terrorism. Unlike previous American conflicts which were largely fought for practical reasons – defeating Indian raiders, opening up new territories for settlements, acquiring resource-rich lands – the SAW was ostensibly fought for two reasons: liberating the oppressed people of Cuba from what was perceived as the Spanish whip (Spain played into US hands by establishing concentration camps and a brutally repressive regime to deal with local independence movements) and exacting revenge for the bombing of the Maine (attributed at the time to Spanish agents).

Teddy Roosevelt charging up the San Juan Heights, the Rough Riders and the sinking of the battleship, the U.S.S. Maine-these are what people commonly know about the United States' war with Spain in 1898. What they may not remember is that this was the war that steered the United States to center stage as a world power. Victorious over Spain in Cuba and the Philippines, the United States, a nation founded in opposition to imperialism, grappled with its new role as an imperial power. More recent events in Vietnam, Somalia, and Yugoslavia bear striking parallels to those of 1898. Even in its own time, the war with Spain was understood as a turning point in American history.
