September 4, 2002 - The Telecommunications Research and Action Center ( TRAC National Consumers League and Consumer Action join to fight the junk mail epidemic by asking the FTC to "Ban the Spam." TRAC, NCL and Consumer Action filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission requesting that unsolicited commercial email (commonly referred to as "spam") be considered an unfair and deceptive trade practice as it causes harm to consumers. The petition asks for a FTC rule that defines unsolicited commercial email as "deceptive and therefore unlawful" if it:
  • Misrepresents the sender (in source or routing information)
Misrepresents the subject or content of the email
Fails to provide reliable contact information for the real party in interest
Fails to provide a reliable opt-out system
Is sent to an individual who has opted out or resigned from sender's list, or to whom sending unsolicited, commercial email is otherwise prohibited by law.

Various strands of anti-spam research aimed at altering email in some manner in order to prevent spam have been brought under the umbrella of the Anti-Spam Research Group, of the Internet Research Taskforce. Many of the ideas have existed for some time, but have not been widely implemented, while others are only beginning to be placed on a firm engineering base.

OVERVIEW Tired of getting so much spam in your email? Get only the email you want, and trash the rest, using Eudora Email's powerful built-in email filtering capabilities!
It is possible, using a few strategic filters in Eudora email, to allow all the email you wish to keep into your email inbox, and automatically filter out most of the spam to a special quarantine mailbox or even the trash, where you can review it at your convenience and then flush it away. And with a little more effort and using a few additional filters as shown here, it is possible to eliminate up to 99% or more of the spam you receive. These pages shows how I use Eudora Versions 5.1 and later for Windows to filter spam from my email, with less than 1 in 100 spam emails making it through to my Inbox. FILTERING GOALS: My goal is to filter out as close to 100% of spam as possible, while not filtering out any "friendly" email. "Friendly" email includes email from people I don't know, so these filters will try to minimize as much as possible the chance of false positives for email from senders that are not whitelisted in the "passlist". In the main filter set, aggressively identifying all spam takes precedence over protecting email from unknown senders. The most recent update of this filter set

SPAM Mail (Unsolicited Email)
SPAM is unsolicited e-mail on the Internet. From the sender's point of view it's a form of bulk mail, often to a list gathered from subscribers to a online discussion group or obtained by companies that specialise in creating e-mail distribution lists. To the receiver it usually seems like junk e-mail. In general it's not considered good "netiquette" to send spam. It's generally equivalent to unsolicited phone marketing calls except that the user pays for part of the message since everyone shares the cost of maintaining the Internet.
Some apparently unsolicited e-mail is, in fact, e-mail people agreed to receive when they registered with a site and checked a box agreeing to receive postings about particular products or interests. This is known as both opt-in e-mail and permission-based e-mail.
How does Spam filtering work in Trinity?
The Anti-Spam system works by filtering your incoming mail through a SPAM filter, and assigning each message a score based on whether it looks like SPAM or not. Messages which look like SPAM accumulate a high score. If the email accumulates a score which is above the spam threshold (5.0 points) then it is tagged as being SPAM email.

How to fight spam email
There are two basic approaches to dealing with the spam, filters, and challenge/response.
There are two basic approaches to dealing with the spam you already receive. One is to filter spam from real email using filtering software. The other is a fairly new technique called challenge/response.
Filtering spam
Challenge/Response
This approach is almost 100% effective in keeping spam out of your inbox. The only spam I still receive is from email campaigns that are small enough that the sender might manually go through the challenge response when they get the automated reply. Usually these emails, while unsolicited, are at least real business offers that I can either ignore or add to my do not accept list and not receive again. It also protects me from losing email that might get filtered by a spam filter since it’s up to a person to confirm themselves, not up to an algorithm to decide what to accept. I also have the option of looking through my pending folder to see if there is any real email that has not been confirmed yet. If I see it, I can manually move it from the pending folder to my inbox so that the sender is automatically confirmed.
The downside of this approach is that I do not get my email instantly. My service checks my POP email box every half an hour. I can make it check whenever I want by manually clicking a “Check” button; if I don’t do this, I won’t receive my email until the server checks 30 minutes later. Email is also delayed when sent from a person not already in my email list. They need to confirm themselves before I get the email. Sometimes, someone might send an email and then shut down their computer. They might not get the challenge until the next time they log on. My pending folder gives a sender two weeks to respond to the challenge, so it would be unlikely that the email would not eventually go through, but the delay is a downside. Of course, if I sift through my pending folder, I can often find such cases and move them myself.

spam Last modified: Tuesday, July 20, 2004 Electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited e-mail . However, if a long-lost brother finds your e-mail address and sends you a message, this could hardly be called spam, even though it's unsolicited. Real spam is generally e-mail advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup In addition to wasting people's time with unwanted e-mail, spam also eats up a lot of network bandwidth . Consequently, there are many organizations, as well as individuals, who have taken it upon themselves to fight spam with a variety of techniques. But because the

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/online/inbox.htm
Search: Facts for Consumers PDF Version You’ve Got Spam: How to "Can" Unwanted Email Do you receive lots of junk email messages from people you don't know? It's no surprise if you do. As more people use email, marketers are increasingly using email messages to pitch their products and services. Some consumers find unsolicited commercial email - also known as "spam" - annoying and time consuming; others have lost money to bogus offers that arrived in their email in-box. Typically, an email spammer buys a list of email addresses from a list broker, who compiles it by "harvesting" addresses from the Internet. If your email address appears in a newsgroup posting, on a website, in a chat room, or in an online service's membership directory, it may find its way onto these lists. The marketer then uses special software that can send hundreds of thousands — even millions — of email messages to the addresses at the click of a mouse.
