Blood of Spain:
An Oral History of the Spanish Civil War
Ronald Fraser
Pimlico 1994 A book review by Danny Yee The Spanish civil war is, for me, the great tragedy of twentieth century history. In quantitative horror it pales beside the Holocaust and many other events, but it has all the classical elements of tragedy: a combination of inevitableness and contingency, the gradual closing of possibilities, and human and organisational flaws aplenty. And it is not one tragedy but many: the failure of the social revolution and its destruction by the communists; the dilemmas of the Basque and Catalan bourgeoisie, caught between the military and the social revolution; the folly of Non-Intervention; innumerable personal tragedies; and the final obliteration of hopes and aspirations, of plans and alternatives, beneath the grim tide of Francoism. Blood of Spain succeeds better than anything else I have read on the civil war in capturing these tragedies. Formal histories lack immediacy, while personal accounts offer only a single perspective; Blood of Spain is an oral history of the war built around the memories and stories of hundreds of people from all political allegiances and all walks of life combatants and non-combatants, men and women, rich and poor. It joins short segments of direct quotation with narrative links to produce personal accounts of individual episodes; these are supplemented with quotations from newspapers, laws, and political texts. The result captures something of how the war affected those caught up in it and what they felt and thought some individuals are followed throughout the war but individual accounts are also grouped so as to place key events and themes within a broader perspective.

Sefarad is a Hebrew word meaning Spain . So, in the strictest sense of the word the Sephardim (plural of Sephardi) are the Jews who came from the Iberian peninsula . Today however the word Sephardim has taken a much wider meaning and includes Jewish Communities in North Africa, Iraq (Babylon), Syria, Greece, Turkey and most Jews who are not Ashkenazim. The word Ashkenazi has had a similar broadening of its definition. Arising from a Hebrew word meaning " German " it has taken on a broader definition that includes not only German Jews but those of Eastern Europe and Russia as well. Today the distinction between Sephardim and Ashkenazim is primarily one of differing traditions due to their backgrounds. Differing languages ladino and arabic vs yiddish and polish ), religious

These pages cover walking in Spain and its islands, including climbing Teide , the highest mountain on Spanish territory. Las Bardenas is an unusual destination, rather unknown in the UK but especially deserving of attention from those with an interest in mountain photography. Spanish food Many peoples only experience of Spanish food is that often served up to package holiday tourists in big hotels catering to northern european tastes. The true food of Spain is varied, healthy and tasty and brings an added dimension to any trip. Basque cooking , in particular, is equal to any in Europe. Photos I have also presented a selection of photos of Spain , both in the landscape photography pages and in support of text.

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.
We found this to be totally true. We spent most of our time on the hilly Costa del Sol and it never rained there at all. In fact, the sun shone every day. We hardly even saw any clouds.
So . . . if it did rain in Spain, it must have fallen on the plain (when we weren't there). Even though it was the beginning of March, the temperatures during the day were in the mid 20's Celsius, making suntanning a delightful experience when we weren't out touring, marketeering or otherwise entertained. This is how it went . . .
