Optimized for IExplorer 5.0 or higher, and a resolution of 800x600 Over 12000 years ago in Europe and the Middle East the first herds of aurochs. To heat the milk produced by these extinct bovine, leather bags were filled with the liquid and put over preheated stones. Occasionally, the milk became a paste that separated from the liquid residue resulting to be edible. Little by little, this accidental 'discovery' was mastered in order to produce the paste in a controlled way, improving the quality of the resulting product. The most important archaeological discovery in dairy history may be the Sumerian frieze (about 5000 years old) in Baghdad’s National Museum of Irak, which represents the phases of animal milking and milk curing. However in 2003 was announced that chemical analysis of 6000-year-old pottery shards shows ancient Britons also had a taste for cow's milk and goat's cheese, becoming the oldest proof yet of chees consumption.
Cheese became popular in Greece and Rome. Later, cheese production expanded throughout Europe, and in the Middle Ages its consumption was generalized, mostly in monasteries, where the production for some of the best known cheeses of today began.

47. LEON (SPAIN) - LoveToKnow Article On LEON (SPAIN)
For a detailed account of this kingdom, see spain history. The captaincygeneral of the province of Leon before 1833 included Leon, Zamora and Salamanca.
http://81.1911encyclopedia.org/L/LE/LEON_SPAIN_.htm
LEON (SPAIN)
LEON, M. DELEON general of the Augustinian order. Luis de Leon is not only the greatest of Spanish mystics; he is among the greatest of Spanish lyrical poets. His translations of Euripides, Pindar, Virgil and Horace are singularly happy; his original pieces, whether devout like the ode De la Ma del cielo, or secular like the ode A Salinas, are instinct with a serene sublimity unsurpassed in any literature, and their form is impeccable. Absorbed by less worldly interests, Fray Luis de Leon refrained from printing his poems, which were not issued till 1631, when Quevedo published them as a counterblast to culteranismo. The best edition of Luis de Leon's works is that of Merino (6 vols., Madrid, 1816); the reprint (Madrid, 1885) by C. Munoz Saenz is incorrect. The text of La Perfecta Casada has been well edited by Miss Elizabeth Wallace (Chicago, 1903). LEON, MOSES [BEN SHEM-TOB] DE (d. 1305), Jewish scholar, was born in Leon (Spain) in .the middle of the i3th century and died at Arevalo. His fame is due to his authorship of the most influential Kabbalist work, the Zohar (see KABBALA), which was attributed to Simon b. Yohai, a Rabbi of the 2nd century. In modern times the discovery of the modernity of the Zohar has led to injustice to the author. Moses de Leon undoubtedly used old materials and out of them constructed a work of genius. The discredit into which he fell was due partly to the unedifying incidents of his personal career. He led a wandering life, and was more or less of an adventurer. But as to the greatness of his work, the profundity of his philosophy and the brilliance of his religious idealism, there can be no question.

David Chess (that lucky dog) had lunch with Vernor Vinge the other day and asked him about the supposed history of Spain he was writing. Mr. Vinge denied it, but did say to expect a new SF novel in earliest 2005. Patience. It's a virtue, from what I understand. Sorry, comments are currently disabled. A brief history of spain, from Atapuerca to King Juan Carlos in 500 words.
    http://www.spainview.com/history.html
    A Brief History of Spain
From Atapuerca to King Juan Carlos in 500 words. Text by Mark Little. Most of the Iberian peninsula has been populated since prehistoric times. Early evidence of human habitation unearthed at the Atapuerca site in northern Spain are some 800,000 years old. Modern man made his appearance around 35,000 BC. Sometime around 4000 BC, much of Spain was settled by the Iberians, arriving from the east. The Celts arrived later, settling in the northern third of the peninsula. Bronze age civilization flourished in the south, culminating with the Tartessian civilization around Seville (1000-500 BC). Around 1100 BC, Phoenician seafarers from present-day Lebanon set up trading colonies in Cadiz and elsewhere along the Spanish coast. Phocaean Greeks also traded along the north-eastern coast. With the fall of Phoenicia, the Iberian peninsula came under the rule of Carthage (present day Tunisia), but was occupied by Rome following the Punic Wars. The Romans held sway in Iberia for six centuries, laying the foundations for Spanish language and culture. Following the fall of the western Roman empire in the fifth century AD, Spain was ruled by the Visigoths, a Germanic people who had migrated from central Europe. In 711, the Muslims of northern Africa launched an invasion across the Strait of Gibraltar, occupying most of the peninsula within a few years. Their presence lasted more than seven centuries, though the Christian kingdoms to the north increased in power over the generations, gradually driving the Moors southwards. The last Moorish kingdom, Granada (the eastern half of present-day Andalusia), was conquered in 1492.

The 500 anniversary of spain s King Carlos I, Charles V to the rest of the world.
    http://www.spainview.com/carlos5.html
Royal Centennial The year 2000 marks the fifth centennial of the birth of Spain's King Carlos I - known to the rest of the world as Emperor Charles the Fifth Charles was the grandson of Spain's "Reyes Católicos", Fernando of Aragon and Isabel of Castile, known in history for conquering Granada, the last Moorish kingdom in Spain; expelling the Jews from Spain; and sponsoring Christopher Columbus's voyage, all in the same year, 1492. Charles was born on February 24 1500 in Ghent, Flanders. Charles's mother was Fernando and Isabel's daughter, the deranged Juana la Loca (Joan the Mad). She had married Prince Phillip "The Handsome" of Burgundy, but in 1506, when Charles was six, the goodlooking consort died. Juana took to touring Spain with her dead husband's body, as visionary monk had led her to believe her husband would revive. The coffin was opened every so often to check, until the late Phillip was finally buried and Charles's mother retired into seclusion in the town of Tordesillas in central Spain, where she would remain until her death half a century later. Charles, meanwhile, had remained in Burgundy for his education. When Fernando died in 1516, the sixteen-year-old Charles became heir to the Aragonese throne, as well as regent of Castile due to his mother's inability to govern. A year after King Fernando's death Charles sailed for Spain with a fleet of 40 ships, arriving at Santander on the northern Spanish coast, then set out for the castle at Tordesillas to visit his mother.
