      History
[edit this] [Upload image] The Iberian Peninsula has been occupied for many millennia. Some of Europe's most impressive Paleolithic cultural sites are located there-the famous caves at Altamira contain spectacular paintings which date from about 15000-25000 years ago. The Basques are the first identifiable people of the peninsula and are the oldest surviving group in Europe. Iberians arrived from south Africa during a more recent period. Beginning in the ninth century BC Phoenicians Greeks Carthaginians and Celts entered the Iberian Peninsula followed by the Romans who arrived in the second century BC. Spain's present language religion and laws stem from the Roman period. Although the Visigoths arrived in the fifth century AD the last Roman strongholds along the southern coast did not fall until the seventh century AD. In 711 North African Moors sailed across the straits swept into Andalusia and within a few years pushed the Visigoths up the peninsula to the Cantabrian Mountains. The Reconquest-efforts to drive out the Moors-lasted until 1492. By 1512 the unification of present-day Spain was complete. During the 16th century Spain became the most powerful nation in Europe due to the immense wealth derived from its presence in the Americas. But a series of long costly wars and revolts capped by the defeat by the English of the "Invincible Armada" in 1588 began a steady decline of Spanish power in Europe. Controversy over succession to the throne consumed the country during the 18th and 19th centuries leading to occupation by France in the early 1800s.

Spanish National Side History Recent History 1998 World Cup - Quarter finals Spain carried on their impressive form in the period leading up to the 1998 World Cup in France, winning eight and drawing the other two of their qualifying games, and only losing one friendly out of four, to France. Results of qualifying matches were as follows: Faeroe Islands : W 3-1 (Luis Enrique 2, Oli); W 2-6 (Alfonso 3, Luis Enrique, Hierro, Johanssen og)
    Czech Republic : W 1-0 (Hierro pen); D 0-0
Slovakia : W 4-1 (Pizzi, Amor, Luis Enrique, Hierro); W 1-2 (Kiko, Amor)
    Yugoslavia
    Malta
: W 4-0 (Alfonso 2, Guardiola, Pizzi) ; W 0-3 (Guerrero 3) Clemente had been playing a team packed with defenders, with some of these, including Nadal, Sergi, Luis Enrique (then playing full back for Real Madrid) and Hierro, playing in midfield. Nevertheless they had been scoring goals, and with a good performance also in the last world cup, were rated amongst the favourites for this one. The disappointment against the African side was compounded by a poor goal-less draw against Paraguay, with Chilavert on unbeatable form, and Spain had one foot out of the competition. In the last match they rallied to beat Bulgaria 6-1, with goals from Morientes (2), Kiko (2), Hierro and Luis Enrique, but it was all academic as Paraguay beat Nigeria 3-1, and Spain were out.

    SPAIN: History
WAIS has a special interest in the way history is taught. From Barcelona, José Manuel de Prada reports: "Some schoolmasters, in Catalonia teach the Spanish Civil War to their students as a war of the rest of Spain against Catalonia. And many people believe that Catalans suffered under Franco more that the rest of the people. In both cases, it is utter nonsense. Another problem with the teaching of history (and geography) in Spain is that so much time is devoted to teach local geography and history that students end up knowing very little about world history and geography". RH: Yes, this is the danger of local history. I suppose the problem is even worse in the Basque provinces. Ronald Hilton - 9/24/02

Country Info Spain Introduction Spain General Data Spain Maps Spain Culture ... Spain Time and Date Spain History Back to Top The national history of Spain dates back to the fifth century A.D., when the Visigoths accomplished a Germanic successor state in the former Roman diocese of Hispania. contempt a time of internal political disunity during the Middle Ages, Spain nevertheless is one of the oldest nation-states in Europe. In the late fifteenth century, Spain acquired its current borders and was united under a personal union of crowns by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. For a time in the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, Portugal was part of that Iberian federation. West European governments refused to cooperate with an authoritarian regime in the immediate aftermath of World War II, and, in effect, they ostracized the nation from the region's political, economic, and defense organizations. With the onset of the Cold War, Spain's strategic importance for the defense of Western Europe outweighed other political considerations, and isolation of the Franco regime came to an end. Bilateral agreements, first negotiated in 1953, permitted the United States to maintain a chain of air and naval bases in Spain in support of the overall defense of Western Europe. Spain became a member of the United Nations in 1955 and joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1982.

The history of Spain is part of the history of Europe and of the present-day nations and states It is traditional (at least, since the 19th century ) to start the history of modern Spain with the Visigoth kingdom. Although it is debatable whether there is continuity between it and the Kingdom of Castilla and Aragon after the 15th century , a discussion of modern Spain would be incomplete without a mention of the Visigoth Kingdom. Accordingly, both it and Al Andalus have their own sections in this article, but should have full-blown articles of their own. to see a page about the Sacromonte area There are guided tours of the Sacromonte Abbey every day between 11am and 1pm and 4pm and 6pm. The guide only speaks Spanish.
The tour is an interesting way to spend an hour, even if you don't do the tour it is a pleasant walk with an excellent view of Granada and the Alhambra.
The tour starts off in the courtyard. The fountain in the centre surrounded by arches is typical of large public buildings built at this time. The museum contains paintings, artefracts and curiosities collected during the past four centuries. There is a map of Granada on a copper printing plate which aparently is the oldest in existence anywhere in the world. Photography is not allowed in the museum. After the museum there is a tour of the church and then the underground catacombs. The church is a popular place to get married. If you are looking for an interesting place to get married this could fit the bill. The view is impressive and there are often amazing sunsets.

to see a page about the Sacromonte area The abbey overlooks the Sacromonte Valley. It stands on the summit of Mount Valparaiso at the top of a path which zig-zags down the hill with seven bends. It was here in 15th March 1594 that two men came looking for treasure and supposedly came across a cave where they found some lead plates. Written in Arabic, these told the story of the martyrdom of St. Tesiphon. The Archbishop ordered further excavations, and some remains, more plaques describing the martyrdom of St. Cecilio, St. Tesiphon and St. Hiscius, and also an oven and some ashes were found. On June 6th 1598, a house was built to guard the relics, and in 1600 work began on the collegiate church. A foundation was established for the abbey with an abbot and 20 canons. The symbol of this foundation was the star of Solomon which can be seen throughout the abbey. Construction stopped in 1610 when the archbishop transferred to Seville, although only the courtyard, the southern nave, and the church which exists today had been built. The original plans for the entire construction (which were never carried out) can be seen in the Library. At the beginning of the 20th century, further extensions were made and another storey was added for the school and university. The building therefore consists of three parts: the Abbey, the Seminary, and the New College.
