Courtesy National Tourist Office of Spain Spanish territory comprises nearly five-sixths of the Iberian Peninsula, which the nation shares with Portugal, the micro-state of Andorra, and the British possession of Gibraltar. Spanish territory also includes two sets of islandsthe Balearic Islands (Spanish, Islas Baleares) in the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands (Spanish, Canarias) in the Atlantic Oceanand two city enclaves in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla (see fig. 1 ). Peninsular Spain, covering an area of 492,503 square kilometers, consists of a central plateau known as the Meseta Central, which is enclosed by high mountains on its north, south, east, and part of its western sides. The area that is predominantly plateau also encompasses several mountain systems that are lower than the peripheral mountains. Although Spain thus has physical characteristics that make it, to some extent, a natural geographic unit, there are also internal geographic features that tend to compartmentalize the country. The topographical characteristics also generate a variety of climatic regimes throughout the country. By far the greatest part of the country, however, experiences a continental climate of hot, dry summers and rather harsh, cold winters. Where these conditions prevail, the soils have eroded, vegetation is sparse, and agriculture is difficult. Irrigation is practiced where possible, but it is difficult because the flow in most streams is seasonally irregular, and the stream beds of larger rivers are frequently much lower than the adjacent terrain.

    Spain - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Spain is a country in Western Europe. It is one of the farthest west in Europe. In fact, if you travel west from the northwestern coast of Spain, you will end up in the Atlantic Ocean. Spain is a peninsula. What is a peninsula? It is a piece of land surrounded on three sides by water. To Spain's north is the Bay of Biscay. To Spain's south is the Mediterranean Sea.
And where there's water, there are beaches, right? This is true in Spain. Spain has lots of beaches. Many of Spain's beaches are world famous. People from all over the world especially enjoy Spain's southern beaches.
At Spain's most southern point is a town called Gibraltar. Just 30 miles away is the country of Morocco. Morocco is on the African continent. So what separates Spain from Morocco? It's a thin part of the Mediterranean Sea called the Strait of Gibraltar.

Spain - External Boundaries and Landform Regions
Spain Most of Spain's boundary is water: the Mediterranean Sea on the south and east from Gibraltar to the French border; and the Atlantic Ocean on the northwest and southwestin the south as the Golfo de Cadiz and in the north as the Bay of Biscay. Spain also shares land boundaries with France and Andorra along the Pyrenees in the northeast, with Portugal on the west, and with the small British possession of Gibraltar at the southern tip. Although the affiliation of Gibraltar continued to be a contentious issue between Spain and Britain in the late 1980s, there were no other disputes over land boundaries, and no other country claimed the insular provinces of the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

The seven islands that make up the Canary Islands are located more than 1,000 kilometres south of the Iberian peninsula and only 115 kilometres from the nearest point of the African coast. Their volcanic origin and their special position in the Atlantic Ocean have given the islands a unique character. The resulting landscape is unlike any other found in Europe or Africa. The seven most important pieces of land are Lanzarote Fuerteventura Gran Canaria , La Palma, El Hierro Tenerife and Gomera. Although local culture is encouraged, the residents of the islands speak Spanish, look Spanish and feel Spanish. Tenerife is the biggest island and is as lush as any tropical paradise except for the volcanic zones where the landscape is almost lunar-like and the famous Mount Teide with it's snow-capped peak.

Located in southwestern Europe, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, between Portugal and France. The country covers a total area of 505,957 sq km. Spain has 4,964 km of coastline. Besides five other places of sovereignty on and off the coast of Morocco, Spain consists of 17 administrative regions (explore them here ), 15 of which are on mainland Spain. Spain occupies four-fifths of the Iberian peninsula and is a land of immense geographical diversity. It offers the tourist a great deal. Spain's coastline has long since been a magnet for visitors but in recent years more and more people are spending holiday time, exploring beautiful and cultural Spain, away from the sea and sand. Spain has everything from lush, green forests and mountain ranges, through to endless arid plains and long, sandy beaches.

Spain: birds and birdwatching - part 1
    by John Muddeman
    Spain - geography and climate
The birds in Spain are diverse and still relatively abundant. This is due to a combination of factors outlined below, including Spain's geographical location, great variation in the local geography and topography of the Iberian Peninsula, including over short distances, and the correspondingly wide range of microclimates present. Mainland Spain, with its mainly warm and dry southern Mediterranean coasts, cooler, wetter and wilder northern Atlantic coasts, lower southern and higher northern inland plains and a Mediterranean habitats in Extremadura series of high mountain ranges including the Pyrenees, Cantabrican range, Sistema Central and Sierra Nevada amongst others, supports a massive diversity of habitats, and consequently, birds. Geography Climate The Country of Spain experiences three climatic types that are continental, maritime, and Mediterranean. The locally generated continental climate covers the majority of peninsular Spain, influencing the Meseta Central, the adjoining mountains to the east and the south, and the Ebro Basin. Continental climate is characterized by wide diurnal and seasonal variations in temperature and by low, irregular rainfall with high rates of evaporation that leave the land arid.
