Ecology is rather like sex—every new generation likes to think they were the first to discover it.

Rita's Destruction Falls Short of Fears
For the storm-shattered Gulf Coast, the images were all too familiar: Tiny fishing villages in splinters. Refrigerators and coffins bobbing in floodwaters. Helicopters and rescue boats making house-to-house searches of residents stranded on the rooftops. the lasting signs that emerged a day after the storm's 120-mph landfall were of an epic evacuation that saved countless lives.

A Minotaur rocket successfully launched a classified military satellite Thursday night. The Minotaur 1 lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, at 7:24 pm EDT (2324 GMT) Thursday, placing the STP-R1 or "Streak" satellite into a Sun-synchronous orbit. The satellite, built by General Dynamics C4 Systems for DARPA, will carry out a classified mission believed to study the low Earth orbit environment while testing responsive space technologies. The launch, which took place shortly after sunset, created a spectacular light show visible throughout southern California, Nevada, and Arizona as the Sun backlit the contrail at high altitudes. Mars Express mission extended Posted: Fri, Sep 23 6:22 AM ET (1022 GMT)
The European Space Agency (ESA) announced Thursday that it has extended the mission of its Mars Express orbiter for one Martian year. The decision, made at a meeting of ESA's Science Program Committee on Monday, will free up funding to operate the mission for 23 months. The spacecraft, which arrived at Mars at the end of 2003, was originally intended to operate for one Martian year. The spacecraft is operating well with the exception of a spectrometer which malfunctioned earlier this year. The extended mission will in particular allow additional use of the MARSIS radar on the spacecraft, which was deployed only earlier this year after a year of technical delays. The radar is designed to study the planet's upper atmosphere as well as look for subsurface water.

The HobbySpace Weblog
September.5.05 Permalink 2:15 pm: Space for All - The HobbySpace Weblog has now become a standard CMS database generated blog September.4.05 Permalink 2:45 pm: HS upgrades ... As you can see, the move to the new server gave me an excuse to create a new and, I hope, improved layout for the web pages. It would have been nice to have it all ready and complete but the site has gotten too big for that. Most of the pages are still a mix of old and new styles. (See Near Space and TVRO for where I'm headed.) So please bear with me over the coming weeks as I update the pages and continue to experiment with menus, color schemes, and the organization of the pages, subsections, and link lists. I hope to make the site easier to navigate and also less amateurish looking. Until now I have focused primarily on expanding content but to grow my readership I need to make the site more inviting to newcomers. My new host also provides weblog software. Plan A is to have "real" blogs in action within a couple of days. The database archiving and browser interface will make it a lot easier for me to maintain

NASA Gravity Probe B Mission Completes First Year In Space
Is Einstein's general theory of relativity correct? Testing two extraordinary predictions of that theory is the goal of Gravity Probe B, or GP-B, a satellite that just marked its first anniversary in space on April 20. The Marshall Center manages the GP-B program. Contact: Steve Roy (256) 544-0034
News release

What is Gravity Probe B?
Gravity Probe B is the relativity gyroscope experiment being developed by NASA and Stanford University to test two unverified predictions of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. The experiment will check, very precisely, tiny changes in the direction of spin of four gyroscopes contained in an Earth satellite orbiting at 400-mile altitude directly over the poles. So free are the gyroscopes from disturbance that they will provide an almost perfect space-time reference system. They will measure how space and time are warped by the presence of the Earth, and, more profoundly, how the Earth's rotation drags space-time around with it. These effects, though small for the Earth, have far-reaching implications for the nature of matter and the structure of the Universe.
