Syracuse 3A Launch Delayed Until Mid-October
PARIS — The planned Sept. 29 launch of France’s Syracuse 3A military telecommunications satellite and PanAmSat’s Galaxy 15 spacecraft has been scrapped because of a defective equipment bay that already had been mounted on the Ariane 5 GS launcher, industry officials said Sept. 23. The problem will delay the launch until mid-October. DRS Acquires Engineered Support Systems WASHINGTON — DRS Technologies is buying Engineered Support Systems Inc. (ESSI) to form a defense technology and service company that would have an estimated $2.5 billion in annual revenue. Boeing, Lockheed To Resubmit Rocket Merger Application WASHINGTON — Boeing and Lockheed Martin have withdrawn a U.S. government regulatory filing related to the proposed merger of their rocket manufacturing operations, but plan to resubmit the application later this week, the companies announced Sept. 21. NASA Closes Johnson Space Center as Hurricane Rita Approaches NEW YORK — NASA officials at the agency’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston closed the manned spaceflight facility Sept. 21 as Hurricane Rita approaches the Texas Gulf Coast. Senate Votes To Amend Iran Nonproliferation Act WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate approved Sept. 21 a bill that would clear the way for NASA to buy the Russian Soyuz vehicles it needs to continue to occupy the international space station beyond this year.

Xinhua news agency said the two-man flight could be launched during the week-long holiday starting on National Day on October 1. But a China News Service report from Hong Kong said Shenzhou VI would take off for a five-day flight from the Jiuquan launch center in the northern region of Inner Mongolia on October 13. fullstory
