Just ask any kid and they'll tell you: Ships are cool.
Almost every kid dreams of sailing to explore distant lands, battling pirates or voyaging beneath the sea in a submarine. For my 10-year-old nephew, the sight of any huge vessel on the open sea makes his eyes grow wide. "Why don't they sink?" he asks. "What's all that stuff sticking out of them?" Now, thanks to a few visits to maritime parks, his questions have been answered.
At these seafaring museums, which often combine land exhibits with actual boats to tour, families get a firsthand look at the workings of ships and their roles in history. But perhaps the best part about climbing aboard is the sense of adventure your kids will feel as they smell the salt air and feel the sea rolling beneath them.
Your family is sure to enjoy a day trip to the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City.

International Museums Day 2005, Hong Kong, Introduction

Beginning in 1978, the International Council of Museums has designated the 18th May of every year as International Museums Day to stimulate public awareness of the important role museums play in society. Mirroring this international event, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has successfully organized International Museums Day in Hong Kong for the past four years, and the event has become an annual highlight of the cultural calendar here. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will once again organize the International Museums Day 2005 in Hong Kong in May this year. The theme for 2005 is "Museums bridging cultures", and more than 30 museums from all over Guangdong Province, Macau and Hong Kong will join hands to hold a two-day Museum Panorama at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The Panorama will feature educational booths, family activities, demonstrations and performances, and for the first time representative collections from more than ten major museums will be on display at the same venue. By participating in this event and also visiting Hong Kong's various museums, the public will be able to enjoy a wonderful opportunity to experience and appreciate different aspects of our culture.

"I can't imagine a better use of my collection than in this noble effort." Lovell's collection includes documents, memorabilia and personal space artifacts. It is presently widely displayed in a number of museums, in his home and at his and his son's restaurant, Lovells of Lake Forest, in Illinois. Lovell's announcement coincided with the anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. On April 13, 1970, Lovell and his crew successfully modified the Apollo 13 lunar module into an effective lifeboat when its oxygen system failed. Their resourcefulness helped return them safely to Earth.
