    http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Social/pulps/SH12.htm
Popular movies like Star Wars have inspired comics that feature their well-known characters, such as R2-D2.
The comic strip, titled Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, debuted on January 7, 1929, with the character now called by his nickname. It ran until 1967.
This 1928 issue of Amazing Stories introduced Anthony "Buck" Rogers to the world.
This comic, designed by people at NASA, tells the story of Apollo 13.
A group of people at NASA's Langley Research Center created a comic book called "Aero Space" in 1992 as a handout for middle school students. The goal was to educate young people concerning the career possibilities within the aerospace industry.
These adventures directly inspired a number of Jules Verne's stories. Reade's helicopter airships predate Verne's Albatross by several years.
Pulps and Comic Books: Popularizing Air and Space Travel
Almost a half-century before humans would invent the airplane, the editors of some popular publications understood the appeal and excitement of flight and incorporated the burgeoning field of flight into their adventure fiction magazines. Filled with futuristic ideas, these publications were never meant to be educational or sophisticated. They were entertainment aimed primarily at young males, simply written and filled with illustrations. Printed on cheaply produced, wood-pulp paper, they were given the derogatory name "pulps." Comic books took this formula a step further, reducing its stories to dynamic drawings with minimal storylines. Despite their lowbrow appeal, however, pulps and comic books gave birth to the way we imagine air and space travel.

ESA's Hipparcos finds rebels with a cause
    [October 2004]
A team of European astronomers has discovered that many stars in the vicinity of the Sun have unusual motions caused by the spiral arms of our galaxy, the Milky Way. According to this research, based on data from ESA's Hipparcos observatory, our stellar neighbourhood is the crossroads of streams of stars coming from several directions. Some of the stars hosting planetary systems could be immigrants from more central regions of the Milky Way. Further details can be found in the ESA Science News Release 23-2004 or in the article on this site Hipparcos parallaxes and the distance to the Pleiades
    [January 2004]
The Pleiades "distance problem" was identified shortly after the publication of the Hipparcos Catalogue in 1997, and remains unresolved. Essentially, the mean cluster distance derived from a number of individual Hipparcos parallaxes is some 10% smaller than the distance determined through main-sequence fitting. A recent Nature paper (see Caltech Press Release ) implies that the Hipparcos results are in error. The situation is not so clear-cut: see

Household Storage: Finding Space for Magazines
Useful tips for storing publications and subscriptions, ideas for space management. Includes product information and creative projects.
Your favorite magazine arrives. Flipping through it, you read it from cover to cover, devouring all the great information and ideas. Then you toss it aside. Pretty soon you have an overflowing stack of magazines that are rapidly reducing your living space. Sounds familiar? If so, you are among many magazine readers who suffer from a common malady: magazine mayhem. Before canceling those subscriptions, consider these solutions. Be picky. If you are a real magazine lover, chances are you keep copies of all of your subscriptions. To reduce magazine mayhem, you may want to change this. Look over your subscriptions. Consider which ones are most useful to you, and consider keeping hard copies of only those issues that are really jam-packed with useful material. For the others you may want to consider recycling them in the following issues. Store the basics. Instead of stockpiling complete issues of your favorite magazines, you can store just those articles, recipes and great tips that you or your family may need for personal or business purposes. One great way to do this is by carefully removing the back and front cover of the publication and clipping it or stapling it to your selections. Beware how you use your paper clips, many times they can clip to other articles if you overstuff your storage bins.

Yet past studies of popular women’s magazines (including studies by the American Council on Science and Health [ACSH]) have found little or no coverage of the serious health consequences of smoking, the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. ACSH’s current survey examined the health and smoking-related coverage during 2001 and 2002 in 15 magazines ( Cosmopolitan, Elle, Family Circle, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, Harper’s Bazaar, Health, Ladies’ Home Journal, Prevention, Reader’s Digest, Redbook, Self, Shape, Vogue, and Woman’s Day ). The survey evaluated various forms of smoking-related messages, including:
    • articles primarily about smoking references that conveyed the risks of smoking or otherwise portrayed smoking negatively references that portrayed smoking in a positive light advertisements – both for cigarettes and by anti-smoking campaigns.

Bringing space to everyone In the beginning... As explained in my original About HobbySpace text shown below , I created this web site to reach out to members of the general public who were interested in space but didn't actively pursue that interest. I believed this was because they were simply unaware that fun and captivating space-related activities existed for regular folk and not just for rocket scientists I wanted to encourage them to join with the many hobbyists who pursue space hobbies such as observing and photographing orbiting spacecraft, flying high-altitude rockets , or even building hardware for space such as in student nano-satellite projects Less technical activities include creating or collecting space inspired artwork and music A sizable business, in fact, has developed around the collecting of space
