Life Science Lesson Abstracts An Investigation into
Effects of Rhizobium Soil Bacteria
on Nitrogen Availability
Problem/Purpose:
What is the effect of a nitrifying bacterium such as Rhizobium on plant growth?
Classtime: 9-10 weeks
Grade Level:
Stream Quality Assessment
Problem/Purpose:
Water quality in fresh water resources is an ever increasing problem in the world. This investigation is designed to allow the student to investigate many of the factors that affect water quality. The student will also gain practice in researching and understanding what raw data about a stream means relative to the stream's health. This investigation will help determine where rivers are healthy and where they are in danger. Once a problem is identified, then a solution can be explored.
Classtime: 6 50-minute class periods Grade Level: Comparing Microscopic Organisms in Fresh and Polluted Water: An Invitation to Inquiry Problem/Purpose: Students should experience this activity as an opportunity to develop and formulate ideas and explanations through the scientific standard of inquiry. They should also learn something about microorganisms.

'Cosmos' reborn at 25: Back in 1980, the world was in a muddle: The United States was struggling with an "evil empire" and knotty problems in Afghanistan as well as Iran and Iraq . Scientists debated whether or not humans were contributing to a "greenhouse effect" similar to that seen on the planet Venus . And an astronomer from Cornell University who worked on that Venusian research, among other things, stepped out as the host of a most unusual public-TV series titled "Cosmos." "For the first time, we have the power to decide the fate of our planet and ourselves," Carl Sagan declared at the top of the show. "This is a time of great danger, but our species is young, and curious, and brave. It shows much promise." Sagan passed away nine years ago - but "Cosmos" lives on, along with many of the dangers and all of the promise that he saw a quarter-century ago. Next week, the 13-part documentary series returns to television, digitally remastered and completely retooled with computer graphics reflecting our updated understanding of the cosmos. The first two hourlong installments air Tuesday on cable television's Science Channel, kicking off the weekly series.

  • Dinosaurs and Us
Students will visit several on-line museums with dinosaur exhibits. While at the sites students will gather information about dinosaurs' habitats and survival needs and ways in which dinosaurs met these needs. This information will serve as the basis for a discussion of adaptation.
  • Lesson One: Visiting Museums . Students will visit museums and gather information about dinosaur habitats, survival needs, and how they met these needs.
  • Lesson Two: Discussion of Adaptation . Students will synthesize the information they gathered at the museum to discuss ways in which dinosaurs adapted to their environments.
  • Worm Bin Project
In this unit, students will learn about decomposition and the life cycle by creating worm bins. Through direct observation, they will develop an understanding of the effects different organisms, including humans, have on one another.
  • Lesson One: Introduction to the Worm Bin Project . Students create worm bins and begin worm bin activity.
  • Lesson Two: Collaboration Online . Students organize into small, collaborative groups and match up with partner groups at another school. Collaborative groups of students collect and exchange data and observations related to the worm bins with their partner group.

    http://btc.montana.edu/ceres/html/EdActivities.html
A team of master teachers, university faculty, and NASA researchers have created a series of web-based astronomy and astrobiology lessons for the CERES Project. These classroom-ready activities for K-12 students represent a robust combination of contemporary teaching/learning strategies from the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996), exciting and current NASA science data, and Internet pointers to an endless supply of accurate and timely resources.
Three Types of Classroom-Ready Lessons are Available On-line:
    • STUDENT INQUIRIES / EXTENSION LESSONS

    • Students explore NASA data to construct first-hand knowledge about the astronomical universe. These internet-based lessons require 1 to 4 class hours and are tied explicitly to the NRC National Science Education Standards astronomy objectives. They can be used as an introduction to astronomy topics, as an intermediate activity, or as an extension activity that requires active participation by students.
    • SPACEQUESTS

    • QuestForm Template

    • APPLICATIONS IN ASTROBIOLOGY

    • Students explore interdisciplinary science topics within the context of astrobiology to construct first-hand knowledge about the origin, distribution, and future of life on Earth and beyond. These internet-based lessons require 1 to 4 class hours and are closely tied to the NRC National Science Education Standards and the Principles and Standards for Mathematics. These lessons can be used as stand alone activities or as supplemental materials for standard math and science courses. Many of these activities are suitable for both middle and high school students, even though they may be cited as being appropriate for one group or another.
