The Space Research Institute (Institut für Weltraumforschung, IWF) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS) covers the Austrian activities in Solar System Exploration, in Near-Earth Space Plasma Physics, and in Satellite Geodesy. It is involved in many international space projects and cooperates with the European Space Agency ( ESA ), with national space agencies in the US ( NASA ), in France ( CNES ), in Japan ( JAXA ), and in China ( CNSA ), and with more than 100 research institutes worldwide. The Institute has three departments Experimental Space Research Extraterrestrial Physics Satellite Geodesy It is directed jointly by the three department heads. At present, the Managing Director is Prof. Wolfgang Baumjohann. With its more than 70 staff members from 10 different nations it constitutes the largest AAS institute. In autumn 2000 the Institute moved to its new building in the southern part of Graz, where the so-called "ÖAW Forschungszentrum Graz" now represents an example of outstanding contemporary architecture.

Advancing Beneficial Nanotechnology
Foresight is the leading think tank and public interest institute on nanotechnology. Founded in 1986, Foresight was the first organization to educate society about the benefits and risks of nanotechnology. At that time, nanotechnology was a little-known concept. Today, with the basic framework of public understanding in place, we are refocusing our efforts on guiding nanotechnology research, public policy and education to address the critical challenges facing humanity. Foresight is accomplishing this by providing balanced, accurate and timely information to help society understand and utilize nanotechnology through public policy activities, publications, guidelines, networking events, tutorials, conferences, roadmaps and prizes. Foresight is a member-supported organization. Our membership, including over 14,000 individuals and a growing number of corporations, is diverse demographically and geographically. They are interested in ensuring that the future of nanotechnology unfolds for the benefit of all. These concerned individuals include scientists, engineers, business people, investors, publishers, artists, ethicists, policy makers, interested laypersons, and students from grammar school to graduate level.

About the Institute The Institute of Neurology was established in 1950, as one of the federated Institutes of the British Postgraduate Medical Federation of the University of London. In August 1995,following the recommendations of the Tomlinson Report, the Institute affiliated with University College London, and formally merged with the College in August 1997. The Institute has retained and developed its close links with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square, and provides teaching and research of the highest quality in neurology and the neurosciences, and professional training for clinical careers in neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, neuroradiology, neuropathology and clinical neurophysiology. With its concentration of clinical and applied scientific activity it constitutes a unique national resource for postgraduate training and research in neurology, its associated disciplines and the basic neurosciences. A total of around 355 staff are employed in some 11,500sq m of laboratory and office space in five buildings. The Institute has a current annual turnover of £24.9m. The Institute was awarded a grade rating in the 2001 HEFCE Research Assessment Exercise . In recognition of sustained excellence this has been upgraded to a measure of its national and international standing.

Universities explore the benefits of designing huge, open laboratories where scientists share territory instead of fighting over it

Ann Arbor, Mich. Universities are starting to break down the walls that divide scientists literally. Over the past several years, dozens of new laboratory buildings have been constructed with large open spaces containing row upon row of laboratory benches. More are under construction around the country. These new lab designs represent a radical shift away from the long-held tradition that scientists work best in small rooms operated as private fiefdoms. Traditional laboratory rooms hold just a few researchers, and the resources there are managed by a single faculty member.

Based upon the technical and commercial promise of carbon dioxide technology to a wide array of manufacturing processes, the Institute is investing in partnerships that explore the cost-effective utilization of high-pressure carbon dioxide as a solvent. The promise of wholesale substitution of high-pressure carbon dioxide for the more conventionally used hazardous and expensive solvents has led to the formation of this industry-university-government consortium including 12 member companies.
North Carolina Space Initiative (NCSI) website
NC State University and the University of North Carolina system have a variety of centers, consortia, laboratories, and faculty dedicated wholly or partly to space-related research and education. Throughout North Carolina, there are numerous businesses and non-profit organizations that are involved in space-related research and commercial activities. As the international community collaborates to explore and utilize the resources of space related research and technology, so must the researchers, educators and business leaders in North Carolina collaborate in order to position North Carolina as a leading state in the area of space related research and commerce. The North Carolina Space Initiative has been wholly or partially responsible for the continuation and establishment of various space-related activities, including the NASA Specialized Center for Research and Training in Plant Gravitational Genomics, the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts Programmable Plants project, the NASA funded grant on the development of oxygen microsensors for space biology applications, the NC Space Grant Consortium's Workforce Development grant, the National Institute for Aerospace, the NASA funded effort to produce an educational CD on "Space Biology and a NCSU Distance Education Learning Technology Applications grant to convert "Space Biology" into an asynchronous distance education course.

About ISAS Graduate Education Participation in Graduate Education Because of the Institute's structure described above, ISAS seeks the maximum opportunity for participation in graduate education through outside universities. This enhances its research capability and also responds to the social needs of the country for science education. At the moment, approximately two-thirds of the research staff participate in the education of students studying in ISAS. The relationship of ISAS to graduate education can take the following three forms: (1) To begin with, ISAS enjoys a unique relationship with the educational system of the University of Tokyo through its interdisciplinary chairs, which developed out of the special historical circumstances surrounding ISAS. At present, nearly two-thirds of ISAS students are accepted in this way. (2) Second, using the system most commonly used at inter-university institutes, students are accepted from general universities as special research students. (3) The third opportunity is participation in the Graduate University for Advanced Studies that is designed specifically for inter-university institutes. This method is to be pursued for further expansion of the educational opportunity.
