NASA turns to universities for research in space-age materials
PRINCETON, N.J. NASA has selected a consortium of research institutions to develop new generations of materials that could revolutionize civil aviation and space travel. The award will establish an Institute for Biologically Inspired Materials to investigate and design materials that simulate repair mechanisms used by biological organisms to heal wounds. The institute consists of Princeton University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Northwestern University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and ICASE, a research institute operated at the NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia. In addition to conducting basic research and technology development, the institute will initiate an education and training program in collaboration with the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The participants are scheduled to gather for an initial workshop and planning session September 25 on the Princeton University campus.

This "living memorial" to the astronauts has a twofold mission:
  • To foster an understanding of space exploration among young people, teachers, and Kennedy Space Center visitors. To improve American education through the accelerated and effective application of technology in our schools.
The Center for Space Education was dedicated in 1994. The design and construction of the building was funded through the voluntary contributions of hundreds of thousands of Florida citizens who purchased Challenger license plates. In addition, more than 300 corporate partners have contributed to The Center for Space Education. This 44,000 square-foot facility has won three architectural awards. It is located on six acres at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, which draws nearly three-million visitors each year. SPACE EDUCATION AT THE CENTER NASA conducts many space education programs in The Center. Its popular Exploration Station hosts more than 1,000 school field trips each year and hundreds of thousands of other visitors. School groups take part in a lecture/demonstration program as well as hands-on science activities using actual space hardware and artifacts. Visitors enjoy the hands-on portion of the program. NASA's Educator Resource Center As an educator, you are invited to visit NASA's Educator Resource Center, also located in the Center for Space Education. You will receive a packet of NASA printed material and have the opportunity to copy a variety of videotapes, slides and software onto your own blank tapes, film and disks.

SACRI's Mission
The Space and Advanced Communications Research Institute (SACRI) will be revitalized with a merging of its research program with the Netlab initiative at the GW Virginia campus. This proposal thus sets forth an amended name for the Institute, proposes a new director, and outlines an expanded set of research goals and objectives. The goal for the renamed Institute would be to conduct state of the art research (as well as support related educational efforts on the part of participating graduate research assistants) in three research areas as follows:

The Colleagues
The Colleagues represent a group of people who have consented to work together in the development of The Program. Over the past several years, The Program has been offered dozens of times all over the world, and as our experience has increased, so also has The Program improved. It began in a very traditional mode, with lots of lectures. It is now all Open Space! If you would care to join us as a Colleague, please let us know of your interest by sending an email to Harrison Owen
Larry Peterson Larry brings 30 years of experience in facilitating meetings and transformational change in Canada and the US. He has been facilitating Open Space Technology meetings since 1990. He has led over 140 Open Space events ranging in scale from 600 to 6. He is a founder of the Open Space Institute of Canada and active in the WorldWide Open Space network. He has led many Open Space events at conferences such as The Governor General's Study Conference 2000, the Learning Consortium's "Safe Schools", CQI Network's "Putting People First in Health Care" and the Kivalliq Community Justice Conference, Territory of Nunavut. He has led or co-led 12 training programs for Open Space facilitators. For more information check his home page at www.spiritedorg.com

Russian Space Science Internet (RSSI) is a successful result of RSSI Project. It is one of the non-profit networks in Russia. According to Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) RSSI provides access to worldwide Internet for Russian science community, including:
- space oriented organizations;
- academic and research centres;
- medical organizations;
- educational organizations. RSSI offers for its members :
  • direct IP connections via fiber-optic, digital or analog circuits;
  • dialup service ;
  • videoconferences via MBONE Internet protocol (there are 2 tunnels available now through the general IP network: one to NASA Internet, and another to Moscow State University);
  • technical support and consulting for RSSI members by high qualified engineering staff;
  • 24 hours a day / 7 days a week network monitoring and user support by RSSI NOC staff.
RSSI interconnecting routing system bases on BGP4 protocol. It is designed so that all organizations connected to the RSSI gain access to the resources of Russian computer networks as well as world wide Internet. As it is shown on RSSI Interconnections Map the current routing scheme is oriented to two peer interconnect exchange points in Moscow:
  • RMIX - Moscow Fiberoptic Backbone. Southern Moscow Fiberoptic Backbone uses TCP/IP as its transport protocol. It joins russian scientific community via FDDI (Fiber Distribute Data Interface) technology in its DAS (Dual Attached Stations) version. FDDI communication line was built by NPP "ROTEK".
