RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES The Bioastronautics and Fundamental Space Biology Postdoctoral Research Program aims to provide two-year, mentored postdoctoral research opportunities in diverse areas of space life sciences at several NASA Field Centers. For the 2005 Program, we expect to offer seven postdoctoral appointments. For information on the type of research opportunities that are available through the BFSB Program, the listing below contains the NASA mentors and their corresponding research opportunities that were available for the 2004 BFSB Program. You may click on the title for each Area of Research to view details on the opportunity. A major element of the application process requires candidates to develop a Research Proposal (3000 word maximum) that relates to and complements a specific research opportunity posted for that year of the program. The 2005 Research Opportunities will be posted here in the near future.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER
NASA's designated Center of Excellence in launch and payload processing systems is the John F. Kennedy Space Center, situated on Florida's central Atlantic coast. This NASA center has long been a takeoff point for both expendable rockets and space travelers headed for Earth orbit and the Moon. The Kennedy Space Center grew out of savanna and marsh, prompted by an American commitment in the 1960s to place humans on the Moon through the Apollo program. Kennedy's "space coast" real estate is now the site of Space Shuttle launches. A Shuttle Landing Facility, Orbiter Processing Facility and other installations are in place, built to handle shuttle integration and rollout, payload processing, prelaunch checkout, launch pad operations, launch recovery, and ground turnaround operations. Kennedy Space Center is placing increasing emphasis on its advanced technology development program. This program encompasses the efforts of the entire Kennedy Space Center team, consisting of government and contractor personnel, working in partnership with academic institutions and commercial industry to transfer technology. This center maintains a vigorous applied research program in support of shuttle launch activities, doing so since 1981. Ground support systems, launch and processing facilities, and environmental protection all receive continued attention for Kennedy Space Center to remain the nation's premier state-of-the-art spaceport.

Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Putting a face on space exploration first meant short excursions above Earth by an astronaut sitting alone in a small, confining "capsule" who ended a brief journey under a billowing parachute and plopping down into cold, ocean waters. Astronaut flight of today features a crew that wings their way into Earth orbit in a huge space shuttle, docking with a space station, deploying scientific spacecraft or servicing a large observatory, then gliding to a smooth, runway touchdown at mission's end. Decades of pacesetting work has created a road into space for human travelers that stretches into Earth orbit and has carried humans to the faraway shores of the Moon. NASA's designated Center of Excellence in human operations in space is Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Through the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, and the planned International Space Station, the Johnson Space Center has been the hub for extending and expanding human operations in space. The Space Shuttle Discovery on its Mobile Launch Platform makes its slow 3.4-mile trek from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad in preparation for the STS-82 mission. The mission crew performed the second servicing of the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope in early 1997.

GEORGE C. MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER
The Marshall Space Flight Center is located on 1,800 acres inside the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. In the past, the center has been identified most often as NASA's launch vehicle development center. While this accurately describes part of the center's activities, it does not tell the whole story. Today, the center is a multiproject management, scientific and engineering establishment, with much more emphasis on projects involving scientific investigation and the application of space technology to the solution of problems on Earth. This is the center's new image, one that will be reflected in the projects of the future. The Marshall Space Flight Center is responsible for the space shuttle main engines , the external tank and the solid rocket boosters . It is also responsible for Spacelab , the reusable, modular scientific research facility that is carried in the payload bay of the orbiter , and managing Spacelab missions. Marshall also has management responsibility for the Hubble Space Telescope , tethered satellite system and orbital maneuvering vehicle and has a substantial role in the development of the space station.
