(Excerpts from NASA MCC Facts Sheet) "Houston, Tranquillity Base here.
The Eagle has landed"
Those words, the first ever transmitted to Earth by a human being from the surface of the Moon, are testimony to the essential role played by the Mission Control Center at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Since 1965, the Mission Control Center (MCC) has been the nerve center for America's manned space program. The men and women who work in Building 30 at the Johnson Space Center have been vital to the success of every manned space flight since Gemini 4. These teams of experienced engineers and technicians monitor systems and activities aboard spacecraft 24 hours a day during missions, using some of the most sophisticated communication, computer, data reduction, and data display equipment available. They watch every movement the crew and spacecraft make, double-check every number to be sure missions are proceeding as expected, and provide the expertise needed to deal with the unexpected. During the Mercury project, when mission control was at Cape Canaveral, capsules were controlled almost entirely from the ground. The capsule's manual control systems served in most cases as backups to the automated systems, and astronauts relied heavily on ground control for solutions to problems that arose. As spacecraft became more complex in the Gemini years, dependence on the new MCC in Houston lessened slightly. During Apollo, when distance and communications breaks made it necessary, some onboard systems became prime while others retained their reliance on MCC direction.

Brazil Alcantara ... Los Alamos There are not many spaceports around the world. Fewer than two dozen have been constructed during the Space Age. Some are well known places open to the public, while others are top secret closed sites. The spaceports dot the globe at locations dictated by political realities and technical requirments for lifting satellites to orbit above Earth. Over the decades since 1957, some 5,000 satellites have been boosted above the atmosphere from these sites. The busiest spaceports are Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg, Baikonur, Plesetsk, Kourou, Tanegashima, Jiuquan, Xichang and Sriharikota. The space programs of the United States and Russia have been comparable in size and by far the world's largest. They were followed in size by the space programs of the ESA, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Belgium and Spain. As we move through the 21st century, competition among these nations is intense and increasing. Click a country name below for additional detail Countries are listed in alphabetical order.

(Phone: 321/867-2468) Release No. 01-33 KENNEDY TEAM CLEANS UP WITH FERTILE INVENTION; WINS NASA AWARD
Faced with the daunting task of reducing hazardous rocket-fuel waste, a team of inventive scientists and engineers from NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC), FL, found a way to really clean up, while at the same time produce a commercially successful and safe byproduct. The team developed a process to convert the hazardous waste to a helpful fertilizer and was honored with NASA's Commercial Invention of the Year Award. The invention was developed by NASA's Dr. Clyde Parrish, Dr. Dale Lueck, Andrew Kelly and Dynacs Engineering's Paul Gamble. Together, they developed the new process in response to an Agency request to reduce the hazardous waste stream captured in a scrubber when a toxic oxidizer is transferred back and forth from storage tanks into the space shuttle's Orbital Maneuvering Subsystem (OMS) and Reaction Control System (RCS) pods. The shuttle's OMS is used for the major orbital and deorbit maneuvers and the RCS is used for orbiter attitude control. The process was tested and is being implemented at Kennedy, where it is being used on orange groves located on the center's grounds.
