Education Office Programs and Activities Education Resources Student Resources ... Compadre The Solar System The Sun
The Sun is a class G star, one of the cooler stars in the universe, but extraordinarily hot by our standards. It is of medium size which has allowed it to continually burn energy at a steady but relatively slow pace. Eventually the Sun will begin to run out of its fuel and balloon into a star called a red giant, but a few billion years will pass before that happens. 98% of the total mass in the solar system is in the Sun, which shows the enormity of it, and yet it takes up a miniscule portion of our galaxy, not to mention the whole universe.
The Sun is fueled by a reaction called the proton-proton chain which converts the abundant Hydrogen in its core into Helium and energy in the form of light waves. While the sun is one of the major elements responsible for life on Earth, it is also extraordinarily dangerous. It has a tumultuous atmosphere and emits gamma rays among other things that human beings should not be exposed to. While, thankfully, the Earth’s ozone layer filters out most of the harmful waves, it is still very dangerous to look directly at the Sun. Galileo did so while conducting his research and was consequently almost completely blind at the end of his lifetime.

German physicist Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck finds energy in packets he calls quanta and formulates quantum theory. He will win a 1918 Nobel Prize for discoveries in connection with quantum theory.

Theoretical physicists rethink the microworld, adopting quantum mechanics based on the quantum theory of the structure and behavior of atoms and molecules.

American astronomer Annie Jump Cannon publishes a catalog classifying stellar spectra.
Italian engineer Guglielmo Marconi transmits long-wave wireless signals across the Atlantic Ocean. He will share the 1909 Nobel Prize in physics.
American aviation pioneers, the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, fly the first powered, controlled, heavier-than-air plane at Kitty Hawk, N.C.
American astrophysicist George Ellery Hale founds the Mount Wilson Observatory in California. Construction begins on the Mount Wilson 100-inch telescope. Hale directs the observatory until 1923. Mount Wilson is a 5,710-ft.-high mountain in the San Gabriel Mountains of southwest California northeast of Pasadena. A general theory of radioactivity is set forth by New Zealand-born British physicist Ernest Rutherford and British chemist Frederick Soddy. Rutherford classified radiation into alpha, beta, and gamma types and discovered the atomic nucleus the structure of the nuclear atom. He will win the 1908 Nobel Prize in chemistry. The rutherford, a unit expressing the rate of decay of radioactive material, is named for him. Soddy will win a 1921 Nobel Prize for investigations into the origin and nature of isotopes.
